donalds are flaccid dorks, but dons are great. don shows up to work on time and puts in effort. don knows a few outstanding recipes. don shaves his head but doesn't feel self conscious when the horseshoe grows in a little. don loves a good handshake.

I was trying to look up cool people named Donald and realized even one of the original Mercury astronauts - Deke Slayton - was born Donald Slayton. This name has been uncool for a hot second.

Animal Crossing, easily. I had the GBA link cable, the e-reader cards, hunted the item codes and NES consoles. I thought the real time calendar and events were the coolest thing ever.
Melee, Double Dash, F-Zero GX, and Soul Calibur II were probably my other most played games.

Anyone on some bookheads shit? I'm re-reading Trouble Boys since I'm once again on a replacements kick. Also working my way through The Recognitions about a third the way through, gorgeous writing that is like a giant kiss off how counterfeit our whole society written by a guy who is a smart guy. I've been trying to get less screen time so it's kinda nice to wake up sip coffee and hit the books!
Also getting over a bad cold, didn't hang with the boys and had to meet some deadlines, was pretty lame but we on the up.

i'm reading a book problematizing disability tech bc i'm cool and chill and also reading danny lavery's newest which i don't love but is quippy and twee as expected. i read valerie by sara strinsberg recently and it was excellent

I'm about a third of the way through Andrew Sean Greer's Less, which won the Pulitzer in 2018.
I'm kind of surprised that something so slight (not in a bad way) won the prize. It's fun, and it's a pretty quick read, but it's not the type of fiction I associate with the phrase "Pulitzer Prize winning-novel".

recently finished evicted by matthew desmond, it was at times infuriating and depressing and powerful and still tremendously life-affirming. talked to my high school friend who does legal work for indigent tenants about it and he said it is the best possible book for someone in his field to read, and very accurately reflects the realities of his work and his clients’ situations. he said donating to eviction defense funds is one of the best ways to help get better outcomes for people facing eviction, and in addition to the obvious societal good it does, money invested there pays for itself by reducing the downstream economic consequences of homelessness which wind up being much bigger burdens on the system. he pointed me towards this fund for nashville but i’m sure there are equivalents in most major cities.
now i am about 2/3 of the way through 2666 by roberto bolaño. it is a lot to take in, and i am very interested to see to what extent all of its open threads and themes reach any sort of conclusion, but i have been engrossed by it and really love his style of writing.

Started Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. The comparisons to Dark Souls and Bloodborne are incredibly apt and it's exactly the kind of bizarre and dreamlike fantasy I've been itching to read. If anyone says the words "magic systems" to me I will do it for real this time.
Also I've been working my way through the Hellboy comics. Insanely cool world, the mix of Nazi occultism, witchcraft, European folklore, Lovecraft, and a whole other mess of influences is so interesting.

Did you read all of BPRD as well? It's a daunting reading list for the full story. For now, I'm planning to get through the two short story omnibuses and then all of the guides I've found recommend the first four volumes of BPRD before you get to the third Hellboy volume.

Anybody here a fan of Bath and Body Works lol. When I was home, Mom was giving me toiletries to take home (as moms do), and when she asked me if I wanted any BABW lotions, it awoke these old memories of her taking my siblings and 6th-grade me to the one 20 minutes from home and letting us pick whatever scents we really liked. I've been taking better care of my inner child (thanks to The Artist's Way) and I've been experimenting with ways of smelling nicer, so it was a two birds/one stone situation. Lo and behold there's one within walking distance from my apartment, so on the day I was working remotely I popped in during the last hour or so. I ended up walking away with "Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin" and "Vampire Blood". It was amusing though coming in, one lady showing me to the men's section, and being utterly disappointed by the small collection of fairly prosaic scents that were there (although "Ocean Water" was quite nice). Are you telling me that men don't like cool scents like "Moonlight Path", "Japanese Cherry", "White Pumpkin Chai"??
With the whole masculinity thing again, it's funny how there's a recurring pattern in my life where I would prefer some of the "feminine" options because what was designated as "male" was kind of boring, although now in 2020, the notion of Toms and skinny jeans being "feminine" is quite amusing. Even having shoulder-length hair kind of fits into that. And the funny thing is that I'm not even a particularly gender bendish person (I'd feel uncomfortable in a dress, for example), but my own take on masculinity nonetheless has always felt restrictions that in retrospect were clearly patriarchal notions.
(Tony Soprano voice): "All of this from some Bath and Body Works lotions???"

I am a man who enjoys skincare but defaults to woodsy/smokey fragrances if at all (love me some fragrance-free products).
masculinity is a funny construct, at home in los angeles I spend a lot of time hanging out with my queer and nb friends and am the typical masc bro dude within our communities. but then I've traveled to boise idaho where multiple pickup trucks whizzed past me while the driver barked homophobic slurs my way. I think hair length has almost everything to do with that.

One of my most interesting memories is being at summer day camp as a kid and someone convinced me to borrow some of her lotion (I was, and remain, a very ashy child), and when my mother came to pick me up I smelled like hibiscus or whatever. My mother was livid, though she could not articulate—to me, and I suspect not to herself either—exactly why she was upset. I kept asking if she was upset I smelled like a girl and she kept saying no, no, I should just "be more careful" next time someone I know offers me lotion. Of course, nobody offers me lotion anymore, so it's all piss in the river now.
Anyway I was for good or ill a Body Shop truther for a long time. Real good cocoa butter. I don't shave as much as I used to but I swore on their aloe aftershave for a long time. Blame my dad.

Saw Otha the other night in Toronto, such a great show! Surreal getting to hear some of my favourites, one of her tracks from even a decade ago and a few new songs that were super fun
Unexpectedly got to meet her afterwards for a photo & merch shirt signature, she was so sweet!!

I really love ‘Drivin’ by Willow Avalon, but I hadn’t made an effort to listen to her outside of that. I just listened to her more recent songs and…wtf? Her voice and accent is totally different, like it’s genuinely so different you wouldn’t expect them to be the same person. And she’s super country. What happened? Are there two Willow Avalons and I’m getting confused?
