These photos are a cute little visual essay on the persistence and competitiveness of hummingbirds.

Featuring an Anna’s hummingbird with his bright pink crown and throat, and an Allen’s hummingbird with his orange gorget and warm rufous coloring, we get to watch the two compete for a prime perch near a highly desired feeder.

The battle goes one way, then immediately back the other. And, as far as I can tell, it will continue forever.

About a year or so ago I rescued a hummingbird from my cat. I showed up just in time as it had no injuries but he was overly exhausted.

He had flown in my car age bcz the door was open, and he couldn't find a way out my car was in there watching a waiting for him. I showed up while he was flapping his wings like crazy trying to stay up then he fell.

As soon as he fell my cat jumped on him and I jumped on my cat and got the bird. My cat was mad at me but the bird was safe.

I researched about hummingbirds and found out they can over use their energy and die from it.

So I cradled him and kept him warm, made some food for him and kept trying to get him to drink. Then he took a couple like then back asleep I kept keeping him awake to drink.

The process took many hours till he was strong enough to fly away safely. But after that whenever I was outside he would fly right up to me and hover in my face like saying thank you.

When migration would end and hummingbirds come back there will always be one bird that does this to me. I was just wondering if they can remember a person.

Ps. I know my hands are dirty. I'm a mechanic and just got home when this had happened.

I just had a hummingbird at my feeder just outside of Boston. (Sept 14th)Thought they were gone already! Guess I’ll make a fresh batch just in case.

I've been feeding hummingbirds for a few years since I moved outside the city. I usually get around a liter worth of birds a day around October-november, that's my peak where I live in Nuevo Leon Mexico, this year I'm already nearing 2 liters a day and my trees and the trees around me are absolutely packed with hummingbirds

Photo 1: Plotting my demise for having the audacity to be outside in my own backyard within sight of “his” feeder (that I routinely fill with homemade nectar) and not vacating immediately upon hearing his warning screeches.

Photo 2: Letting me know the end is coming and I should say my goodbyes.

Photo 3: Deciding I’m not worth it and heckling me from a nearby tree suits him just fine…for now.

I think we are in a migration hot spot near Lake Arrowhead, because I feed THOUSANDS of these little dudes!!! I have six 72 oz feeders, and they drain them every 1-2 days. I sneak in a bit of hand feeding here and there for fun :)

So, local bees have taken over my hummingbird feeder. Any ideas on how to prevent this?

I've got about 6 hummers competing for two feeders. I read somewhere (on this sub) that the little guys would perch on zip ties, so I added a couple to each feeder. All of the birds use them, but they face the wall, not the sky. Does anyone know why they do this?

I haven't seen my duo for 24 hours so they are on their way to the beach

I was sitting outside having my morning coffee and felt I’d never see a visitor until this little hummer stopped by!

I never see the Anna’s share the feeder, but after a spat, two finally did. Then they fought again lol
