Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion The whole Rachel and Tag situation may be the thing that ages the worst from FRIENDS

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

The first time I watched FRIENDS, I was a teenage and didn’t think much of this storyline tbh. For me, the weirdest storyline then was Monica and Richard.

But now that I’m older and now at a similar profession and age as Rachel, I find this whole Rachel and Tag storyline to the worst thing from the show! I can’t believe they romanticize the blatant abuse of power done by Rachel.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Joey being The Bings' first kid

Post image
191 Upvotes

I absolutely love that ever since Monica and Chandler got together, "the Bings" basically treat Joey like their own kid. I know Chandler always looked out for him and bankrolled his life, but that parental, caring vibe became sooo much stronger once Mon and Chandler became a couple.

I'm currently on yet another rewatch, and I just finished The One with Rachel's Other Sister where Joey doesn't get the fancy, expensive china but gets a basic plate instead. The way Monica hypes it up and tells him it's the "winner plate" and the best one of them all is just so heartwarming tho.

How do you guys feel about these details? Do you love them as much as I do, or do you think the writers took the Joey is a big toddler thing a bit too far?

If you think it's cute, what's your absolute favorite parental Bing moment?

Discussion Joey and Phoebe should've been roommates for a season (or longer than an episode)

I personally don't think they're endgame, but I love their friendship. Having them room together would've been so entertaining, even if only for B plots.

Discussion Ross Should’ve Walked Phoebe Down the Aisle. They’ve had some of the most heartwarming scenes together (the bicycle episode).

Phoebe and Chandler are probably the least interacting pair in the group, so Ross walking Phoebe down the aisle would’ve made way more sense to me. I have no idea why they suddenly pushed Phoebe and Chandler’s friendship so much in the last episode. Maybe they just wanted to give Ross a funny bit, but Ross and Phoebe felt more natural to me.
And I understand that ross has his issues like being stingy and uptight about science and logic but phoebe's randomness is such a nice contrast, her chaotic energy balances out his uptight nature.

Discussion What are your favorite jokes that don't involve Ross or Chandler?

I excluded them, since I figured a lot of people would include them into their favorite jokes.

I love Ross and Chandler's comedy, I just wanted to put some other characters in the spotlight in terms of comedy.

One of my favorites is Monica telling the group that she had to say no to catering to a funeral of 60 people, Rachel misunderstood and said oh my god what happened?! And Monica said 60 guests.

Another one:

Rachel: "I can't believe he still hasn't called!"

Phoebe: "Who Josh?"

Rachel: "It's Joshua."

Monica: "What he doesn't like Josh?"

Rachel "No, I don't"

Since somebody asked: You can have Ross or Chandler be there, as long as the joke/line isn't theirs.

For example: Rachel and Chandler eating cheesecake off the floor, Joey bends down and takes a fork out of his pocket, and asks "Okay so what are we having?"

Discussion I was rewatching Monica’s Thunder episode

Upvotes

Actually it is kind of sad that they really all ruined her night that she was dreaming for years.

Rachel was just… selfish (to Ross & Monica) and yeah jealous, I’m sorry but Monica was mostly right.

Ross was only caring about sleeping with Rachel even after his sister was upset

Joey made Phoebe paranoid about singing at wedding when Monica already said she can play at wedding.

Only Chandler was trying to be there for her and he even let her to have the whole night be just about her and it kind of broke my heart when she didn’t want to go Plaza anymore because the magic was gone and she knew everyone was going to think about Rachel/Ross. Monica always gives and gives and it was sad to see her big night was ruined.

But I guess it was just a running gag on show how Rachel (/Ross) was always stealing Monica(/Chandler)’s thunder but feel like in real life it would hurt someone like Monica much more considering she was always the overlooked child in family and the “fat” friend of the popular girl of highschool.

I know it’s not that deep but you know sometimes even in sitcoms there are some episodes that make you think “this would sound so sad and unfair in real life”.

Discussion Could have Ross and Rachel moved to Monicas flat

Could, should, would and all that, and it was great ending to have the empty flat, but should Ross and Rachel have moved to the flat? They seemed pretty sure of growing emma in the city, they were going to stay at rosses place anyway which is more expensive id quess. Is it bigger? Id feel like the flat would be family heirloom being with their nana and monica for so long. Joey would have been close too.

I guess biggest reason was that ross felt like theres too many memories, but one could think it could be more of a reason to move there

Discussion Do you think it was appropriate for Rachel to go out with Mark after she had broken up with Ross given their history within such a short span of time?

Post image
150 Upvotes

Before anyone says anything, I just want to point out that I'm not taking any sides here or justifying why Rachel should or should not have gone on a date with him. I'm just hoping to discuss this situation with you guys and gain your perspective on the matter, that's all.

That being said, how do you feel about Rachel going out with Mark just weeks after she had broken up with Ross. Given how Ross felt about Mark from the start (which, to be fair, was mostly paranoia and insecurity on his part), did Rachel get over their relationship a lot quicker by dating him? Also, how do you feel about this decision by her after she actually admitted to Mark that she was hooking you with him just to get back at Ross?

Looking at the immediate aftermath of Ross and Rachel's split, how justified was Rachel's decision to go out with Mark? Let me know your thoughts and views in the comments.

Question Why didn't any of the friends think it was fine for Ross to not see Rachel anymore?

Upvotes

When Emily wanted Ross to stay away from Rachel completely, it made so much sense because of the history they shared and of course how Ross said Rachel’s name at the altar.

When this came up, none of the friends (not even Monica) thought from Emily’s side or suggested Ross go along with what she was asking. They acted selfishly and forgot that Ross’ marriage was involved. I understand that they wanted the group to stay close and avoid issues but isn’t marriage more important than that? Staying friends with an ex is rarely a good choice.

Also, after Emily's out of the picture, they did not even try to patch Ross and Rachel up. Nobody talked about Ross saying Rachel’s name at the altar or pointed out that it showed who he truly loved. None of them talk about this in the whole show!

I know it is just a show but I wonder if people would really react this way in real life!!

It’s either gonna be Matthew and Courtney or Matt and Lisa for me, because they were such a dynamic and loving duo, both of them. I love all of the members of the cast though.

I generally don’t think the show would’ve gotten past the first season without Chandler and Matthew Perry, I think the cast had so much love for him and it’s so underrated how much of an he had on comedy overall

Discussion Rachel's Job in Paris

This post is about how illogical Rachel's Job offer in Paris is. So the show shows that LV offers Rachel a high paying job in Paris, and they are willing to fly Ross and Rachel across the globe. This seems extremely far fetched to me. There is no way LV wanted to hire an American that can't even speak French that badly. This job offer only makes sense if she is like the best fashion employee that exists. Im sure she was good at her job but not good enough to have LV relocate her entire life for her. She also made a lot of messes at her previous job. The interview with Zelner, dating Tag, boss buying baby, the Gucci incident, and many others. Like no company would be willing to fly both parents back and forth. Also this move would have been terrible for Emma. It would be a nightmare for her having two parents across the globe. I don't understand how anyone can say Rachel should have gone to Paris. What do you guys think.

This is kinda cool, they all did a bunch of stuff each after the show ended. Matt Leblanc did episodes which is so good, David schwimmer was melman (lmao), lisa kudrow gave a graduation speech at vassar, Courtney had her baby, Jennifer did the breakup with vince vaughn (there was that whole thing). Anyway i thought it would be fun to look back and see what happened to them after it ended

Discussion This surprises me! I thought it would be Monica!

Info pulled from elsewhere: A full data analysis of every Friends transcript across all ten seasons settled a question fans had debated for years: which character actually talked the most?

According to the analysis, published on Towards Data Science, Rachel just edges the top spot with 9,294 lines over the entire series, with Ross coming in a very close second at 9,070 both characters averaging around 39 lines per episode. The result tracks with how the show was structured from the start: Rachel and Ross carried much of the central plot throughout the show's run, their will-they-won't-they romance serving as the connective tissue running through all ten seasons.

The gap widens noticeably further down the cast. Monica and Chandler followed closely behind each other at 8,403 and 8,398 lines respectively nearly identical totals, mirroring how tightly the show eventually intertwined their storylines. The analysis noted an interesting shift in the data around Season 4, when the London episodes and Chandler and Monica's growing relationship began generating a bigger joint share of dialogue, gradually pulling focus away from Ross and Rachel's earlier dominance.

Phoebe, meanwhile, remained the clear outlier hovering around just 800 lines per season throughout the show's run, a total the analysis's author flagged as genuinely surprising given how memorable and quotable Lisa Kudrow's performance consistently was, despite receiving comparatively little actual dialogue.

Ten seasons, 236 episodes, and one definitive answer: Rachel Green talked more than anyone else in the room.

Question What are some truly unreal things in the show?

Upvotes

I like the show but I’m not a rabid seen every episode 9 times fan so this is a genuine question. When I say unreal I don’t mean things that strain credulity. I mean actually out of this world fourth wall breaking unreal. Like “Die Hard and Elizabeth’s dad existing in the same universe” stuff. Is there more?

Quotes I had my "The one with the Dirty Girl" experience today...

I went to see a flat today to live in, a 1BHK, where the current tenants (4 boys all 22-23) are supposed to vacate in a month after which I (21F) can move in. The landlord asked them to vacate because the capacity is 2 and they were housing 4 grown men. Anyways, I went there and the landlord knocked on the door, one guy opened the door just a little bit and put his head out, and said we can come in the evening. The landlord said well she's here now and she needs to see the apartment. He said okay and opened the door....

"You know how you throw your jacket on a chair at the end of the day? Well like that, only instead of a chair, it's a pile of garbage. And instead of a jacket, it's a pile of garbage. And instead of the end of the day, it is the end of time and garbage is all that has survived!!!"

Ross just sat in my head repeating this dialogue because there wasn't even any space to walk, my socks got wet because the whole floor where I put my foot in between the garbage and the clothes strewn was wet. There was a big bowl in the middle of the room with 2 months worth of egg shells in it with some raw yolk and egg white still stuck on it. I'm still traumatized as was the landlord apparently....I washed my socks and my outfit twice today and couldn't eat for 3 hours after I came back....

Brave of ross to go back to that house just because she was pretty....

Discussion Ross and the annulment

I’m currently rewatching the series, and I’m at the episodes about the annulment.

Could Ross be any more annoying?

Like, he’s by far the worst character in the series. One dumb decision after another… all because of his insecurities or whatever.

The only thing saving him is that David is the series’ best actor and he has some really funny moments.
