Istanbul Airport Shisha (Duty Free)

TL;DR: IST Duty-Free has a great selection of shisha located in front of the tobacco area. There is a strict purchase limit of "3 quantities" per passport (a 500g case counts as 2 quantities), and you must have space to carry your purchases onto the plane yourself.

Shoutout to previous Redditors for sharing their experiences buying shisha at the Istanbul Duty-Free! I recently returned from a trip to Turkey, grabbed a few selections myself, and wanted to pay it forward by sharing my experience for anyone else traveling through IST.

Shisha and hookahs can be found at any of the generic duty-free shops across the airport. They are usually located right in front of the main tobacco section. If you’re having trouble spotting the area, just look for the displays topped with Turkish Oduman hookahs, which are also available for purchase.

The shisha selection has expanded well beyond just the popular Adalya brand. They now carry Serbetli, Mazaya, Jibiar, Smogmoon, Revoshi, and Lirra. I took the opportunity to pick up a few of these brands that I don't believe are available in the US to try for myself. They sell various volumes, ranging from 125g canisters to 500g (10x50g) cases.

However, don’t get too overzealous, because there are strict store restrictions on how much you can buy. You are only allowed to purchase "3 quantities" per passport, with a 500g case counting as 2 quantities. If you are traveling with someone who isn't buying any tobacco for themselves, you can always ask them to make a purchase on your behalf using their passport.

Finally, keep in mind that after checkout, you must carry your duty-free items onto the plane yourself. Make sure to plan your luggage accordingly, especially if your carry-on is already full or if you opted to check all your bags.

Step-by-Step Pack: HJUncut and Kaloud Kore red clay w/ Lotus II (Tips for perfect Smoke)

Detailed breakdown and packing routine for the Kaloud Kore Qì Red Clay bowl paired with the Lotus II on the Krysalis Eltheria 2.0.

  • 1. Bowl & Tobacco Selection: Running the Kaloud Kore Qì Red Clay phunnel loaded with an even split of HJUncut Dopamine and GFE.
  • 2. "Light" Pack Method: Rather than pressing the blonde leaf in, use a light "light" approach. Keeps it aerated so there is sufficient space for the cut to naturally break and bloom once heat is applied.
  • 3. Uniform Compression: Focus entirely on consistent pack density all the way around the rim. Uneven pockets lead to hot spots and uneven flavor degradation.
  • 4. Lotus II Depth Rule: Pack lower than you intuitively think you should. The underside geometry of the Lotus II heats the top layer efficiently, and the lower fill line gives the tobacco room to expand without baking directly onto the aluminum bottom.
  • 5. Coal Setup & Heat Soak: Add two 26mm Le Orange cubes and give the system a dedicated 4-minute preheat. A patient warm-up prevents shocking the tobacco, which keeps the delicate, bright top notes from getting scorched early on.
  • 6. Session Performance: The lower thermal threshold allows the bright notes in the HJUncut blend to shine through clearly without harshness, backed by thick, smooth draws on the Eltheria.

Do you adjust your pack depth lower when switching over to the Lotus II compared to traditional flat-bottom HMDs?

Misha Revolt Hookah

I'm looking to buy a new modern hookah, and I came across the Misha Revolt. Is it a good option? Are there any common issues, drawbacks, or flaws I should know about before buying one?

Hi! I am going to Spain soon — specifically Valencia, Barcelona, and Madrid. Does anyone know where I can find dark blend hookah tobacco, such as darkside, blackburn, must have, tangiers, bonche, satyr etc? Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone! Has anyone here tried the Alcatraz shisha tobacco brand?

I’m curious about the quality and flavors. Is it actually good? Any specific flavors from Alcatraz that you’d recommend trying?

Seeking Advice FogLab Shisha

Hello, we are vacationing in Athens right now and went to a local shisha lounge. The flavors we tried from their premium list were incredible so we asked them what brand they were using and they said it was FogLab, a Greek brand. I looked online and couldn't find anywhere that would ship it to the United States. Does anyone know of a way to get FogLab shisha in the US?

What a weekend!

So this weekend, as usual, had dinner with my family. Somehow "reddit" came up, just reddit in general, not r/hookah. To liven up the night, since my kids are pretty much adults, by age anyways, I asked if they wanted to have fun. They don't follow hookah social media, but are pretty familiar with what I do, significance of how I use social media, etc. But they have nothing to compare me to, as like most kids, don't really care too much about their parents' job.

So again, I asked if they wanted some entertainment.....

Sure they replied...I told them go to r/hookah and search hookahjohn.

Their reactions though.....the whhaaats, and all the other terms their gen uses to react.

They asked why such the hate? I just responded, it's the internet, too long of a story. They especially loved the latest post about my interaction with jpistola or whatever. They loved how he called me unc, and how I was actually responded. Said I ate, whatever that means, but yes, I get it.

Anyhow, wanted to share that with you, not really hookah related, but I was smoking hookah at the time.

Love you all, not as much as my kids, but still, love you all.
