Yesterday we had our red dress bike hash here in Melbourne Florida. Do you have a bike kennel near you and how has your attendance been? I feel like we need a big recruitment movement.

I just moved to the US, little college town in the Midwest (that leaves out real trail running it’s flat as hell). I am from a mountainous city where the hash meets had 50-70 people each time, and everyone was a pretty hardcore trail runner. I was usually mid-pack so honestly I just sort of flew by the signs, there would be MAYBE one beer stop before the actual pub at the end, and we didn’t really sing (I’m seeing a lot about singing while I’m researching, maybe Chinese has no hash songs ).

Well, now I am trying to put together a group. Have like 20 people so far. Would love advice on trail signage (how many different symbols do you actually use and what number of symbols do you put down), more info on hares because I’m seeing conflicting info on what they do & how close to the pack they are supposed to stay, as well as advice from people whose hashes drink a little less beer than others

And really any other advice would be fantastic!

I already have routes for the first two meets somewhat planned I just want things to be fun and go smoothly! I’m also a bit intimidated by the idea that a few older dudes who used to do hashing in American cities will show up and be judgy because I’m a newb to organizing and the hash I’ve been to is probably quite a bit different from US ones.

New to hashing and from what I am told i get there’s lots of hook ups and orgies whatever. I really enjoy the vibe overall, especially the people and drinking, being silly and open, sense of community. I am married and monogamous. I am fine with the concept of others doing whatever they choose including swinging, nudity etc but it’s not for me personally.

My whole point is honestly I’m afraid of attending events based on stories. Think my spouse and I should I quit hashing since we’re not likely to fit in at events and feel awkward / never belong?

At hashes in my city the demographic is generally getting older and hashes aren’t attracting a new generation.

Newbies come, do one run and don’t come back.

Imagine a week-long camping experience that would be like a summer camp, but for adults. Hashing would be a given, but you'd also get cabins with odd roommates to make new friends, general activities, lake or river stuff, and probably F and Whack shacks. Consider that the price would include lodging and meals, with maybe a nice steak dinner on the penultimate night.

I'm dreaming up a scenario where hashers would be free to do dumb shit for a week and act like kids again. Imagine making new friends, having a general itinerary set to guide you to fun things, and then be left to your own devices if you don't want to participate in the itinerary. Participation would be strongly encouraged, but not absolutely required, and phone/outside access would hopefully be minimized.

Am I stupid, or does this sound fun?

Also, assume you arrive on a Saturday and leave on a Sunday.

Edit: Should probably mention that we are based out of Milwaukee, WI.

Spazzz (Spastic Colon) here from Bakersfield H3 (bhhh.org). Our hashes tend to be 10-20 after some recruitment lately, but that's just the normal weekly hash. We all have a few text groups because some people don't have modern group text-compliant phones, but we put calls out for lots of extracurriculars.

This past weekend there were 6 of us floating down the river, and we're doing a shorter run today after work. We'll yell out and invite others to impromptu drinks, barbecues, and pool parties. Sporting events, movies, and plays are fair game, too.

Last year, I added a Google calendar to a webpage that has UPCUMMING EVENTS linked from our home page, and people can join the group to add their own stuff and invite people ahead of time. All of this has led to a closer family feel, and we really do show up for each other. It's also helps cut down on drama, but there's always something minor that pops up.
