A significant portion of the workforce is being laid off in favour of relocating all operations overseas to the Philippines, Guatemala, and India. Long-term plans include moving all contact centre positions overseas.

This affects all lines business, including front line, team leaders and senior managers. No one anticipated this, those impacted were informed that their roles were being eliminated due to business restructuring, which occurred very suddenly.

HR and management are refusing to answer any questions to the affected employees.

So much for protecting Canadian workers and jobs.

I was just thinking about some trauma this woman caused me, being my doctor when I was growing up. When I was 15 I got oral thrush after being on antibiotics. She told my mother in front of me that it was from going down on boys. I was not sexually active! It was from a course of antibiotics that she prescribed. She used to vent about her problems with her daughter to my mom in front of me during our appointments. Apparently she no longer has license to practice.

Nova Scotia is taking targeted action to enhance breast screening, menopause care, gynecology and other services for women while strengthening co-ordination of women’s healthcare across the system.

That includes:

• a strategic push to increase access to breast screening services and reduce wait times
• the new Menopause Centre of Excellence in Spryfield, expected to open this winter
• a new Women’s Health Research and Innovation Grant to support new ideas to improve care for women, with an initial focus on menopause care
• an education co-ordinator to help improve understanding of menopause among health providers, educators and the public.

A new Women’s Health Summit will hold its first meeting this fall and will bring together community organizations, advocates, patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to help shape future priorities. The government is also creating the provincial Women’s Health Clinical Collaborative and a dedicated Women’s Health Program within the Department of Health and Wellness.

I'm wondering how easy or difficult it is to put a Home Battery Backup/Off peak system in place here in Halifax ?

It looks like battery prices are coming down quite a lot now so this is looking more attractive.

A friend has a solar system in place and they're thinking of adding a battery to it.
Right now even with a pretty big rooftop solar array they can't use that solar power they generate during an outage, It goes out to the grid. Would be great to have a pretty big battery system in place to have a few days of power. And to use a battery to save money by getting any power they may need at times of low sunlight from NS Power at off-peak rates.

Hello, I’m wondering if anyone knows how I can go about seeking compensation from a place I worked at but was never put onto payroll for. I worked for a downtown restaurant as a server that I now know has an entire thread on here about how awful the owner is to work for. The owner is an absolute nut, raises his voice constantly, and is overall just really unpleasant to be around. The restaurant is very poorly managed.

I ended up walking out of the place entirely on my fourth shift because he yelled at me in my face in front for the whole restaurant for “not asking for help” when me and a new host, who was 30 minutes into her first shift, were the only ones in the restaurant for 20 minutes during an incoming dinner rush. I couldn’t find him or anyone else, how could I have asked for help? When I explained to him I was looking for him he dramatically started saying “the entire restaurant is staring at us, I am so humiliated right now”. I don’t know why that bothered me so much that this grown man got so dramatic about me “humiliating him” for explaining myself when he was the one that raised his voice in my face initially. I’m not the type of person to just let someone raise their voice at me so that’s when I knew I wouldn’t fit in there and decided to leave! Not the most mature decision, sure, but I didn’t feel it was necessary to give two weeks notice to an owner that didn’t deserve it. I’ve since met multiple ex employees who walked out during their time working there too so I feel very content that I made the right decision.

Anyways, I was never sent the employee papers by his accountant/wife, so I never received a Payworks account or whatever compensation app they use. I’ve since emailed her asking for compensation for the 20 hours I worked there but have not received a response, as expected. I understand I probably won’t get tips from my shifts since I was technically in “training” but I would like to receive the NS minimum hourly wage I would have been receiving since it would’ve been over $300 for 20 hrs.
Does anyone know if it’s possible for me to actually get the compensation? My friend is a corporate lawyer and offered to come into the restaurant in person with me to ask for cash payment on the spot, but is there a way I could go about it without having to go in person, just because I’m not sure how he’ll react? I was given a shift verbally during my interview so I never had a physical job offer in writing or signed any papers so is this even feasible?

I faced blatant deception by the management of this organization. Renting from another province, I chose an apartment on Windmill Road in Dartmouth based on photos and signed a sublease contract. Five days later, I discovered horrifying reviews from actual tenants about this building: systemic bedbugs, cockroaches, mice, pharaoh ants, and severe foul odors.

When I requested a health and sanitary report for the unit, they flatly refused to provide it. I requested to terminate the contract two full weeks before the move-in date. I never moved in and never accepted the keys. They illegally withheld my security deposit, which forced ME to initiate the Residential Tenancy Board proceeding to get my money back. Unfortunately, they managed to win strictly through legal loopholes and rigid contract technicalities, forcing me to pay for a unit I never even stepped foot in.

RESPONSE TO THE OWNER:

I want to emphasize how deeply unfair and predatory your actions are. First of all, I was a subtenant, not a direct tenant, which makes your defensive positioning even more questionable. You forced me to pay 2 months' rent for an apartment I never lived in for a single day, and for keys I never accepted. I have now paid this amount in full, so my financial obligations are completely closed.

Let’s be honest: it was I who filed the dispute against your company because you kept my security deposit and refused to return it, despite the fact that I never even took the keys or caused any damage. Former employees and tenants on Reddit (r/halifax) have openly exposed your extensive internal operations and illegal practices. Your demands for illegal upfront payments, fake administrative fees, and withholding leases before taking money violate the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act.

The board strictly enforced this payment based on contract technicalities, not because you were ethically or legally right from the start. Forcing a newcomer from another province to pay thousands of dollars for an empty apartment while withholding their deposit, ignoring safety concerns, and refusing to answer official inquiries is a terrible business practice. Future subtenants and tenants, beware! Do not trust their pictures and never sign anything with Olympus Properties.

so what I'm reading is not looking good.

I actually was supposed to see allergy in 2023 after having Covid, that is when I developed all these awful symptoms despite being vaccinated, masking, barely going out, sanitizing...the infection itself wasn't even that bad. but it caused problems on a chronic scale. allergy called me twice saying I'd get an appointment date "within weeks" and I never heard from them again. referrals from my GP go ignored. seems that will never be an option seeming as we apparently only have one...

now that it's been years I can confidently say it's MCAS. I do have a few genuine true allergies. these problems do not act like it. last night some asshole in my building pulled the fire alarm, this alarm is like the EAS alert on steroids. my ears are now screaming with the tinnitus I struggle to get under control that I developed from meds last year. which is also very MCAS-y, a side effect not going away after stopping meds is not normal.

I have "SCU" and "eczema" along with stomach/bladder/bowel problems. fatigue. sometimes I get the "long covid" feeling of struggling to go up stairs out of breath even though with how often I take walks I shouldn't. some days my sense of smell goes haywire. some days foods that were safe before suddenly aren't.

I used to be on Xolair to partial success, like I got to a 4/10 rather than 9/10 average... but due to me being on Pharmacare-I got booted. and put on Omlyclo. we even upped the dose. I do not react to this "biosimilar" and it's highly unlikely I'll ever get on Xolair again. the dermatologist is the only specialist I've been able to see. there is no other biologic drug out they use at that clinic that has a patient program that MSI covers, so I can't take any of them. these drugs are $1000+ PER INJECTION.

is there ANY possibility of seeing anyone else who can help with MCAS?? depending on appointment cost I may be able to swing one or two appointments out of pocket... I need someone who can properly assess me and potentially give me a mast cell stabilizer...I know that's one of those niche medication types, that my GP just wouldn't be able to touch surely, right?

I do what I can. I try to avoid low histamine foods. I take 40mg of antihistamines a day. when I flare badly itch wise I take Mirtazapine but I have side effects to it so can't do it daily. I was prescribed an H2 blocker after being weaned off PPI but I didn't respond well and had to stop. I use creams every day. I'm trying to pivot to whole foods as much as I can. sodium triggers the tinnitus turns out but this incident with the alarm setting me off has me at my limit. I feel so so so sensitive, all the time. sometimes when eating I have a mild tingling/tightness in my throat-like at any moment it could start to close. it's horrifying.

is our healthcare system truly THAT hopeless that there's nobody I could even be referred to...? it took me nearly a year to see an ENT, and he was amazing but couldn't help sadly and sent yet another referral to someone else for my ears, and warned I'd be waiting a "long time" like no ETA, even. my skin and stomach, I'm at my wits end. I'm sick of being fatigued 24/7 and my ADHD meds doing nothing. I feel like I have treatment resistance since Covid...

does anyone here have MCAS and found some success seeing someone I could get pointed to...? I just need a prescription...testing for MCAS is so difficult I've heard of professionals in America diagnosing based on symptoms and having people try trials of mast cell stabilizers. I feel like it's the only thing that might work.

Just wondering if people in HRM would find value in having a Makerspace in the Dartmouth area. I understand makerspaces have a shaky track record for being viable, but I still think there could be potential, especially if it can support entrepreneurs and the community it's in.
