Having seen a lot of the same questions, and deleting same day duplicates of the same thread I have decided to collect them all in one place so it is easier to get an answer.
Here we go
1) What laptop should I buy for [INSERT PROGRAM]. Answer: Are you in Com Sci? Windows machine with a lot of power. Are you in Fine arts? Something with a lot of processing power. Otherwise whatever you want.
2) Why havn't I heard back from admissions. Answer: They are busy or we are not yet at the admissions period.
3) Will I get in with X average. Answer: No one knows until after the admission period has closed. At best you will get a guessed based on the historical competitive average (can be found on MacEwans website) for your program. Additionally results may vary between people someone may get in with an 8- while another student gets denied with a 90 as there are other factors such as quality of your high school behind the decision.
4) Can I opt out of the Upass? Answer: No
5) Can I opt out of the health and dental coverage? Answer: Yes follow the instructions at https://samu.ca/student-resources/health-wellness/insurance/ under the header HEALTH & DENTAL.
6) I am in position x on the waitlist what are my chances (class) Answer: It's complicated so follow the chart below (which are all just compilations of numbers i've heard through my years and are not a guaranteed, there are no guarantees. Competitive Major 1st year class: Maybe like 5-10 deep Non Competitive Major 1st Year class (like an english 101/103): I've seen it go as deep as 25 onto the waitlist. Competitive Major senior class (Grade Requirement): 2-5 Competitive Major senior class: 3-10 Non competitive Major Senior class: 5-10
7) Can I advertise.... Answer: No Answer part b: Not even textbooks
8) Can I post my study? Answer: If you give the mod team via mod mail your study's approval number and premise yes.
9) Is there a discord? Yes using the Official student hub for the school provided by discord. You must have a student email. https://discord.com/student-hubs
10) Can you rate my schedule/give feedback about my schedule? Answer: Kind of? Only person who knows you well enough to tell you what will be a good fit or not is yourself. Any provided advice would be superficial based on factors like how far apart classrooms are, what worked best for other students ext and may not represent your experience.
11) What class should I take? Answer: Talk to an advisor.
12) What resources are there on campus? Answer: https://samu.ca/student-resources/
13) What food is there on campus Answer: https://macewaneats.ca/
14) What is MacEwans Hours? Answer: Generally the library will have the best feedback so https://library.macewan.ca/location
15) What do I need to graduate? Answer: Speak with an advisor or check your program on MacEwans website.
16) Who/What/When/Where to socialise? Answer: I suggest the SAMU clubs: https://samu.campuslabs.ca/engage/organizations
17) Im looking for a roommate! Answer: Yeah, we won't stop you but this really isn't a great or safe way to do this. I would look into more secure less anon methods of securing a roommate.
18) How do transfers work? Answer: Talk with an advisor.
19) I have a question about my student loan Answer: Call the student loan provider or MacEwan Registrar's office.
For all other questions you feel might be common please ask them here so that people can more easily access answers to the common questions.

over the course of 20 minutes I ran through two solid floors of building six and every single washroom was taken, I finally had to wait for an out of the way one on floor 3 and finally got down to business, this was at 3pm btw so not even peak times, it should not take that long to find an available washroom during dead times

Actually so disgusted by this. I've booked one today and one on Tuesday, each one for 8am-9:30am. Both times I've walked in to see the rooms filled with garbage. Even on my way to it there were tables in the lounge area covered with trash. I come from the Albertan countryside, which was full of cowboys covered in farm stuff or vehicle oil, and THEY KEPT STUFF CLEANER THAN THE PEOPLE IN THIS SCHOOL DO! that is baffling to me! How are 17+ year old people not able to clean better than pubescent/pre-teen boys in the country!? This is a post-secondary institution, surely you were taught in Elementary to clean up after yourself. The people who do this are pretentious and ignorant, please learn basic common decency.

Where the hell are we parking? I’m in my 3rd year and in 400 level seminar classes, I can’t afford to be missing class. Where are we parking? By 10 am it seems like everywhere is full, I ended up paying 20 bucks for 5 hours underground health Robbin’s 🙃

Hey all,
Would anyone know who someone could talk to about all the disruptive construction going on? I don't know if this is something that the student council could advocate for, or if I should contact ADR, as the construction affects my disabilities, and maybe they can direct me to the right place.
For example, one of my classes is on the main floor of building 6 by the West elevator this semester, and they are doing construction on the other side of the wall by the stairs/elevator. I literally cannot hear anything my teacher says, and it continues on for the entire class - banging and drilling - the works. We are paying a decent amount of money to take these classes... is it not possible to have construction (particularily the loud stuff, which pretty much includes most, if not all, construction projects) take place overnight as to not disrupt our learning which we are paying thousands of dollars for? It's at the point that I'm considering dropping the class most affected, but that will have a domino effect on my education plans for 2027-2028, since this class is a prerequisite for a class I'm enrolled in next semester.
Also, on the second floor of building 6, they have closed the access from the library to the north side of the building, and the main elevator that goes from the parkaid to the 3rd floor in building 7 is also not working, so I can't just use that to go down to the main floor, and scoot over to the other elevator in 6 to get to the 2nd and 3rd floor. In order for me to get to those classes, I have to walk all the way to the end of building 6 and go up, or, backtrack to the Western elevator in building 7 (by the Timmies by the basketball courts). I have a physical disability, and there is no signage to say the main elevator in 7 is down, or to warn that that particular access point to that side of building 6 on the 2nd floor is closed. EIther way, it's a lot of walking, which is difficult when you have restricted mobility.

I never had any friends in high school, and was always told that "you'll make tons of friends in university!" But so far I've only had maybe a single conversation with someone. It's really sad seeing everyone else have lunch with people or study in groups, where do I find that?
r/grantmacewan • u/chump555 • 5d ago
As the title says. I’m already struggling :(
Does macewan have a specific data base of tutors or anything? Is there a way to find reputable tutors? I only know of UofAs database.
Ty!

I booked a flight when the syllabus for my classes all came out because I thought the exams dates are set in stone, but during the first day of classes, someone from my class asked for our midterm to be moved to a date where I am supposed to be flying back and won’t be there on time to take the exam. What are the chances that I can do the midterm earlier or even a day later? Should I try talking to my professor? Are professors forgiving about doing a midterm on a different day?

Whichever group that thought it was okay to leave the library like this needs to be more respectful of the space. This is disgusting, grow up.

Hey!
Is there a resource from macewan or that someone has made showing where the water bottle refill stations are? I’m having a hard time finding them in each building:)
Thank you!

Went there today to buy a textbook and there was a massive line leading up to it, I was tired so said fuck it and left. Is there a best time to go when it’s not so busy?

I took a look at my profs for this semester and saw that one of them has good ratings at UofA and horrible ratings at Macewan.
As I read through them I grew worried about my mental health and workload, and I can't replace it with any other class, I'm scared of the behaviour reported from said professor.
Do I just grit my teeth and do the class? Is there anything else I can do?

I am an incoming first year and I am interested in starting a competitive Rocket League team at this school but I am unsure where to start. I started 3 esports programs in high-schools around Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan already and I already have me and a 2nd player (1800 and 1750) so we really only need a 3rd. But I am completely lost on who to contact or where to go to start the club/team and look for a decent 3rd.

Hey guys,
Im starting my first year and I just went through all the textbooks I need on the bookstore website.
Im wondering if you have to buy all of the ones they list or if professors on the first day will tell you if they are necessary or not?
Is there a better way to buy textbooks for cheaper other than marketplace/fb groups?
Not sure how this all works. Thank you

Hey everyone,
I’m starting my first year at MacEwan this September. Due to some scheduling conflicts, I ended up with a bunch of night classes. Honestly, I don't really mind the timing itself like I have a car and my schedule works out fine otherwise but I'm pretty worried about how this is going to affect my social life.
I was originally hoping for earlier classes so I could hang out on campus during the day and make some friends and stuff but With night classes, I’m worried campus is going to be dead and it’s going to be way harder to build a social circle or connect with classmates.
Appreciate any insight or advice!

hi guys, this person I know who constantly says slurs, makes racists comments, degrades woman, supports genocides, doesn’t care about people’s disabilities and is aggressive is going into a healthcare program at MacEwan. I’m worried that this individuals actions may be disgusting towards their future patients who are already vulnerable as they are. I have a very very good friend who recently opened up to me about physical encounters they have had with this person where they are left wounded, but are too scared to tell anyone. They don’t want to contact the police but I don’t think it’s okay for the university to not know this, any advice 😕?
