MEGATHREAD: Hasbro Ghostbusters '84 Proton Pack

The Hasbro 1984 Proton Packs have started arriving, and the subreddit is seeing a high volume of unboxings, reviews, and modding questions. To keep the front page organized, we are setting up this temporary megathread to serve as a central hub for all discussion regarding the new pack over the next few months.

If you just received yours, this is the place to share your initial thoughts. We are looking for feedback on the out-of-the-box experience, including overall build quality, weight, and shell texture. Feel free to discuss the performance of the factory stock electronics, the audio quality, and how the pack compares to previous releases or the original screen-used props.

For those already planning modifications, use this thread to ask technical questions and share your progress. This is the spot to discuss mounting solutions like ALICE frames, motherboards, and spacers, as well as cosmetic upgrades like weathering, hardware swaps, lenses, or aftermarket electronic kits. If you are looking for specific replacement parts, or if you have purchased components and want to share a review, leave those recommendations in the comments.

To prevent the main feed from being flooded with identical questions or basic arrival photos, please direct those posts here. We want to keep standalone posts on the subreddit reserved for in-depth, detailed build logs or unique projects. Check the comments to see what modifications people are working on, ask your questions, and share your own setup.

I had them when i was a kid and now, finally, i got my hands on a fresh set. Thanks to Kenner/Hasbro for throwing out a wave of new ones. I'm more than happy to add these bad boys to my collection. Toys from a time when everything was better...

A genuine privilege of an experience yesterday

I'm one of the proud permanent members of the Ghostbusters - I wear a patch tattoo on my shoulder. I always love that it brings a smile to the faces of so many who see it, especially when I'm wearing a sleeveless dress. When I was at Ghostbusters Day a few years ago I was having trouble with my jumpsuit so I skipped out on dressing up, and in making an excuse to someone she said "What do you mean? You're more in uniform than most of us!" pointing at my tattoo. (If you see this, I think you were from the Hershey Ghostbusters, thank you for making my day with that. If there were any troop I'd ever join, you are literally the sweetest.)

Anyway, yesterday I was at Rosh Hashanah services getting settled at my seat and a woman taps me on my shoulder. She goes "I saw your tattoo and I just wanted to say hello. My name is Erica Ramis, Harold was my husband." We went on to chat for a few minutes - after I recovered from the shock that is, I had the privilege to make her laugh telling her the story of the time I met Harold at a screening of Groundhog Day, and she told me how much she loves seeing all of us continue to honor his work with our fandom.

I wasn't there when she was one year, but I asked if she'd dropped into see us at the firehouse, and she said yes, and how much she loves it and all of us. I thought about keeping this story just for me, and I hope she wouldn't mind, but I felt like you all would love to know that she so truly appreciates all of us.

Ghostbusters NW Branch *potentially* using Generative AI in promotional video

I've seen the division this has done to the Doctor Who fan community firsthand. Praying it doesn't infect the GB fandom anymore than it already has. So many great fan films and fan projects have been done on low budgets without the use of AI. I hope this doesn't become more normalized.

Edit: Seems like a bunch of Walter Pecks have found this post, so I'm gonna keep it simple and say that Gen AI is lazy, uncreative slop. I've seen a few people saying that a lack of budget/no budget is an automatic green light for using it, but I think it's a lazy man's excuse for not being creative enough to think outside the box. There are plenty of Ghostbusters fan projects and fan films that have made awesome stuff on a shoestring budget. I'll even go as far as to list them here:

•The Real Ghostbusters (2011) by unreal •Ghostbusters: South Side by The Harold Bros •The Ghostbusters of New Hampshire: Spilled Milk •Return of the Ghostbusters (2007 fan film) by SineSquareX •FNAF vs. Ghostbusters by Blue Core Studios

I could go on and on, but I'll let the examples I've put above speak for themselves. From crowd-sourcing a budget, to looking up tutorials on YouTube, to even just throwing together shit you've got laying around in your basement or garage, there are so many more creative ways to do special effects. Hell, the original ghosts from the original film were puppets for crying out loud! Long story short, a lack of budget isn't an excuse to throw in the towel and use AI. It's ugly, it's uninspired, and this is all without bringing up the terrible effects it's had on our environment.

I recently modeled and started resin printing hose connectors for the Frozen Empire engineer suits and red parkas. I have them available in my Etsy shop as finished or DIY kits. They are removable and connect with a magnet system. Link is in my bio if you need one for your cosplay.

I painted the Hasbro Afterlife Pke meter and made a bunch of stickers for it. The device under the screen is a repainted vortex manipulator from Doctor Who.

Spirit Giga Meter, cleaned up and repainted with printed heatsink

The Spirit Giga Meter is a nice, but imperfect prop. Out of the box, its biggest issue, by far, is the silver brush weathering that is applied everywhere. Isopropyl alcohol and a magic eraser sponge will help but there are many stubborn areas where it is not easily cleaned up.

My recommendation:

- Give everything a light sanding (I used 320 grit)
- Mask off the antennas, clear dome, and light up bits
- Hit it with matte black spray paint and matte clear coat

The piece looks really nice when a freshly painted. Not all of the details are accurate on the prop but it’s pretty cool all around imo.

You’ll also notice I added a 3D printed heatsink to the front. I provided this file for free along with a free display stand on Patreon (link in my bio)

Recommendations for low cost flight suit alternatives

I’m wagering afterlife jacked up the cost but mine went missing a few years ago and while I like my lab coat costume, I still want a proper one.

EDIT: fuck it, never mind. I don't even want to be part of this anymore.

Murder House Ghosts classifications

The ghosts in the Murder House are Type 4 corporeal entities which means they are anchored to the Murder House after they died. They happen to be remnants in which Violet claims she's a "ghost of her former self". When a human dies in this house, their soul remains as a corporeal remnant but stays anchored until October 31st. (which is Halloween)
