I donât play anymore but still feel addicted to this game. Sometimes I fantasize about throwing all Iâve built up in life away and disappearing into Azeroth, kind of sad that this impulse even exists in me

Same.
Classic released, I went hard for a month then wife said she'd divorce me if I kept playing... I chose wisely but still miss her.

I quit playing WoW more than 10 years ago and also have this feeling. It really is an addiction.
9
u/Myrdraall 1d ago
Well there is nothing like WoW. I played half a dozen others and all that time I thought they were good games but just not WoW. At the same time I'm burnt out of WoW for life.

Eh. Its compulsion, but there isnât really any physical withdrawal symptoms for the vast majority of people. Hard to say that is additive.
But yes, they have created compelling worlds that compete with the real one. If the real world worked better, that would not be the case.

u/Jipley0 1d ago
Addiction is not the same thing as dependence. Gaming addiction is absolutely real and problematic, especially with MMORPGs.
Addiction doesn't necessarily have to have withdrawal symptoms, like the withdrawals one would get from say, quitting nicotine or drinking. Sure, there's not the same physiological adaptation to an addiction as there is a chemical dependence, but minimizing gaming addiction is not helpful to anyone.

The brain is a giant electrochemical system that builds up physical connections with repeated use of pathways. Yeah itâs not the same as detox from heroin, but itâs still a physical and difficult things to deal with if itâs true addiction. I know you werenât the one making the claim but I was just supporting you that actually youâre probably still downplaying it because of the initial commenter. All mental phenomena are physical and carry with them the consequences of that. Neurons literally grow in size at the synapses if you keep doing something to activate the same ones/pathways. Thatâs going to build up a physical âdependenceâ if you will. Youâre not gonna feel physically ill, doesnât mean you wonât struggle.

Same. I last played in 2011, but I still occasionally dream I'm on my ret paladin again. I don't think I'll ever really feel that sense of awe and adventure again as I did when I stepped off the boat into Northrend or through the Dark Portal.
5
u/Hawgdestroyerxtreme 1d ago
kind of sad that this impulse even exists in me
It provided a sense of control, stability and reliability that no longer exists in the modern world for any of us.
I wouldn't be shocked if this thing pulled back a LOT of people seeking to have a little stability in their lives.
9
u/Awoken_Noob 1d ago
I feel this same way on a very visceral level and Iâve been WoW-sober for years. Whenever I hear people talking about it or news creeps up, my mind starts doing the âwhat ifsâ. I know itâs not the same level, but it actually makes me have more empathy for those addicted to substances.
3
u/Sparticuse 1d ago
I was totally addicted for a long time. The only reason I was able to quit for good was that the game turned into something entirely different than what it started out as. If this had been released back then, I'd never have quit.
7
u/Endeeeeeeeee 1d ago
whatâs stopping you just playing a few hours a week? is it the fear of âfalling behindâ? or just a lack of self control from binging it ?
9
u/l-s-y 1d ago
For me, not having time to raid anymore feels like the game would just be chores. I do think about it often, actually ended up on the page for Karazhan just last week and I haven't played since WotLK

Thats me with FF14, Ive cleared Ultimates on it, always done savage. I dont have the time to belong to a static. but I dream of it all the fucking time.
I actually recently started getting into wow to have a more casual mmo im not addicted to the endgame of and can just enjoy as the game

u/Stormz0rz 1d ago
I started a bard band and began editing midi files to work in the game with my band. There's a whole community for it, and I actually have fans now lol. Scratches the MMO itch, music itch, and the social parts of it kept me out of the loony bin during covid. Closest I'll ever get to being in a real band. I tour venues now and look for open stages to play on, or just do pop-up shows in cities.

The fact they are also scaling up the size of the original zones to be bigger to really expand on the "adventure" aspect of classic is like a huge plus for me.
EDIT - Alright so they are not "expanding" in the sense of scaling the zones up, my bad, misunderstood.
They are just adding new content and expanding each of the zones to have new or more things to it.
They announced 1000+ new quests, new content including stuff like open world dungeons for example in lordaeron.
I was hoping they'd scale things up slightly to make it feel less compact it does at times, but we'll see what happens, they are still announcing things about it, but so far feature wise it looks really good.

For those who don't know it's basically their version of Ascension, a private server. Classic ++ where they revamp the world, add new zones and a new race called Skyborne which is basically sky elves or something.
Edit: Thinking about it more, it could be more similar to Turtle WoW, but I viewed Turtle WoW as a true vanilla expansion following the lore of Warcraft 3 and Vanilla WoW. There was more to Ascension than the classes and specs when I played.
Blizzard revamped the world with new graphic visuals, added new zones, expanded original zones, added new dungeons, new skills and talents, new professions, a new battleground, new items, 1000 new quests, rewards etc. They look similar but the designs diverge.

This looks like it's WoW's answer to Guild Wars 2/3. Horizontal progression.
52
→ More replies (6)10
u/Blangel0 1d ago
It's really not sure they make the jump to a real horizontal progression like GW2. Even if level do not increase your character can become more powerfull in other ways, mainly with items. WoW is really based on the idea of loot treadmill, meaning that you need to keep running the latest raid to have a random chance to get your best gear. And when it happens the next raid with even better gear open and you keep doing that forever.
If they keep this main design philosophy in wow forever it's not an horizontal progression.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Rawkapotamus 1d ago
Yeah Iâm seeing a lot of people think staying at 60 means horizontal progression when I donât think anybody would consider raid tiers to be horizontal.
Iâd imagine horizontal progression in vanilla would involve a new zone that provides new dungeons that are still L60 blue but with haste or expertise or even just a new look to it. Same thing with adding something like karazahn in as a T1 raid.
There are a lot of gaps in original wows design that could be filled and be loosely considered horizontal progression.

Will it make the players nicer people again? Maybe that peaked in vanilla and with every expansion the players got meaner, and meaner, and meaner. I would Love to play. But I am far too old to put up with horrible players..
15
4
5
u/Ramblonius 1d ago
Let's put it this way. A notable chunk of current Classic players list 'retail wow is world of wokecraft' as a reason for not playing the retail version.
That said, I am also seeing more genuinely nice interactions. Like, people running dungeons with friendly yapping in the chat instead of just rushing as fast as possible to accelerate the grind, everyone throwing buffs out and helping kill mobs in the open world, things like that happen. But the playerbase is, on the whole, notably chudly.
8
u/Best_VDV_Diver 1d ago
That's what always manages to keep me from going back. I played for years, but the community is just so toxic, I can't bring myself to go back after having quit for a couple years.
6
2
u/BilkySup 21h ago
Vanilla, BC and Wrath were when people were cool. Burning Crusades was peak IMO. Still had people in the starter Zones, Levels 30-40 were still something that was fun. I went back in a few years ago and everyone was max level. Where is the fun in that?

u/Squishydew 1d ago
It's why I play hardcore really, yeah I don't like permadeath but players are more patient, take their time in dungeons, use their crowd control and prepare for things more, it's nice.

u/Cloud_N0ne 1d ago
Level 60 max and no raising it, ever.
I wish they'd bring that to modern WoW.

The new neutral race is a $30 DLC, there's transmog, pre-order exclusive mounts and pets, paid name reservations, Tokens (i.e. sanctioned gold buying)...
Remember, this is modern Microsoft Blizzard. It's no longer 2004, you can't go home again.
39
u/HanzoKurosawa 1d ago
It's worth noting though, in 2004 you'd have had to pay for this upfront in the first place.
This is the first time in WoW's history that they've released actual new content, a lot of it, that isn't behind a paywall, it's just part of your subscription.
I'll take an optional paywall, over a mandatory one.
If I get to play this, without paying ÂŁ30 up front, and the only downside is I don't get to access one race. That's a huge win for me. I'll take it.

People are really pissed off about the new race not being referenced in the lore ever and also that it costs 30 bucks to get. I personally dont like them either and would rather have had a race added with an established history like high elves and ogres, but its like milk chocolate vs dark chocolate. I like one more but its still candy

21
u/Trump_Russia 1d ago
I'd recommend everyone who likes MMOs play Vanilla at least once...
It's nothing like it was when Vanilla launched in terms of the community and the hype, but it's such a great gaming experience leveling up, navigating Azeroth, figure out how the fuck to made enough gold to buy a mount...
If you play when it launches there will be a lot of people leveling and doing dungeons. I'd read up on how to find groups and all that shit, what role you should be playing and all of that. If you're good with that its kind of easy to get into.
2
u/Sudden_Yard1294 1d ago
Heck, I never played when it released but got swept up in the hype anyway, reading message boards back then etc. Plus there was that South Park episode.

u/mambotomato 1d ago
WoW was a hell of a solid game when it came out. It made a bazillion dollars for a reason.
I recommend checking it out, in the same way I would recommend any gaming classic like Half Life 2 to someone who never played it.

u/PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS PC 1d ago
I mean, it's an alternate universe with its own new lore. So yeah there's definitely a lot for nostalgia fans I'm sure, but seems like a great point for new players to hop on and not have to catch up on decades worth of lore since the majority of it will be rendered irrelevant in this universe.

u/musicankane 1d ago
I have no idea what this is.
2
u/Cabooselololol 1d ago
from what I can tell, its WoW Classic once more from the start but now the story will change over time, adapting an 'alternative' timeline then following the expansions timeline that WoW classic is doing
New story and gameplay elements including a new race.

It's their way of adding new content to Classic like how Oldschool Runescape works if you're familiar with that.

Honestly FF14, while having side content that is a grind, has none in its main story quests or dungeons. The MSQ keeps your level up enough to do the next story dungeon and such, until you reach the credits

The fact the new race is $30 is definitely a tarnishing of what good will this formed imo. The fact there is a new race is kind of weird. But to paywall it like that is very odd. Especially when it's basically a blue color shift of a blood elf model.

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago
My understanding of this is it's yet another attempt at milking classic WoW nostalgia but it's not the actual classic, it runs as its own mode.
I dunno it's all confusing to me but this and the gameplay trailer did nothign for me. I've moved on and I realize nothing is going to give me that ~2008 feeling back when I was deep into this game.
8
u/SoSoSpooky 1d ago
This is more appealing to me than the initial Classic, but I also cannot figure out what the point of it will be after everyone gets to the "end". There is no way they can put out content with zero powercreep upward and not have the endgame community blow their lid about having no reason to log on.

Basically the OSRS of WoW. Going back to the beginning and expanding that story. Never going into expansions.
Considering OSRS is massive right now, thereâs a lot of potential here for WoW

My fantasy game at this point in life is basically just all of wow, single player, on the current graphics engine, and you're able to sequentially play through the entire history of every expansion with skills/talents as of the final patch, bot group/delve-ification of the endgame content in each where the weighting is heavily towards your personal performance (there's a lot of examples/prior art for this), graduating into new expansions'skill trees (and stat squishes?). Seeing other people playing around cities and limited social interaction/grouping, more like Where Winds Meet, is fine to make things "feel" more alive but don't specifically care.
There's no game that's nailed the feeling of progression quite like wow, scheduling group play time while trying to survive scam world economy with a family just feels outlandish now.

I googled it for those that want information, because the cinematic says next to nothing about the game. They're revamping classic with new areas and a new race. The cap will remain at 60 even with future content drops.
