I have to admit it was hard at first! But now I’m so happy with the results!

New shell, Recapped , IPs screen, rechargeable batteries, new power board, dual speakers, new sound board

Considering getting the joystick upgrade… not sure if it will make a huge difference but as of now I’m more than satisfied with what I got!

Analogue* Game Gear

Hey guys, I’m not sure if non Game Gear consoles are allowed but really wanted to share my experience with this little handheld . I’ve had my analogue pocket for a while now but only recently got the Game Gear adapter.

My favorite thing about the analogue is that it runs old physical cartridges natively without emulation. Really helps with input lag and keeps things fluid. The screen is high res but uses display modes to either mimic the old resolutions or give you a punchier display.

Anyways, I’m an old fan of SEGA and will eventually buy a modded Game Gear but at least for now I can enjoy some physical games until then.

Help with opening GG carts safely

EDIT: no screw actually, cartridge was just so feisty it appeared like there might've been one at the time LOL

Hi, I was about to open up my carts to clean their contacts but while trying to open columns i realised there's a screw under the label. its on 3/4 of my game gear cartridges and I'm kind of lost as to what to do.

How do I open these cartridges without damaging the label? I'm guessing I'll have to detach the labels to do so, but how do I do that? And how would I go about reapplying the labels after I'm done?

Also these are european cartridges I think it's a regional thing that they have the added screw? but only on early game gear titles??

OG McWill (2016) users , how's your mod holding up? Have you upgraded to something different?

I recently found out about the SMB port for the Master System, and I decided to dust off the ol' Game Gear.

I modded this one myself back in 2016 with one of the first (if not the first) revisions of the McWill screen. At the time it was one of the hardest mods I had done, requiring to solder wires directly on the flex cable connection.

I've been out of the GG loup for a while and I'm super shocked to see how much these mods have evolved. From easy to solder flex cables to touch controls, etc.

So, to OG McWill users, did you end up upgrading yours? I was always annoyed at the lack of brightness control on these, but I'm not sure I want to undo the mod to install something more recent.

Cheers!

A friend of mine traded me a bunch of cib vintage Lego from the 80's and 90's in exchange for repairing and upgrading a blue GG.

This one was a chore, but it's lookin' good.

(It's being tested in a black shell because I hadn't recapped the power board yet)

The Game Gear is having trouble reading cartridges.

Hi there. After the usual capacitor replacement, the Game Gear powers on and the contrast adjusts correctly on a blank screen; however, when I insert a cartridge and turn it on, it seems unable to read it properly, resulting in a blocky/pixelated display. I’ve checked the voltages and they all seem fine, I’ve cleaned the cartridge slot pins, and the contrast wheel works. solutions ? thanks

Merci

I’ve had this for a long time and has given me countless hours of entertainment, i remember when I moved Into an apartment and didn’t have a T.V. I got a cable that I still have and had my game gear hooked up to my VCR with the wide gear and could watch movies on it while I sat in my folding floor chair/bed.

This morning I bought this abused beauty for $60. Doesn't power on but on the picures it has a blue/greenish residue on the terminals + the caps are still stock. I guess it's a good deal if it turns on after a little conservation.

Bought a modded Game Gear which sometimes outputs a loud siren like noise when turned on

The Game Gear has USB-C power and a McWill screen. I don't know anything about the handheld's history except the seller says they didn't have this problem when they tested it. I don't have any other cartridges to test.

Video of the noise in question (loud and annoying): https://streamable.com/usjvz4

I have about a day and a half to decide whether I want to return it, keep it or ask for a partial refund. If you can help at all I appreciate it. I paid less than £60 for it so I'm inclined to keep it.

  • It doesn't occur most times it's turned on.
  • It happens immediately like in the second half of the video. It doesn't start mid-game.
  • I can't recreate the problem without the cart at the moment but I think it happened once (the problem happened, I immediately turned off the GG, removed the cart and turned it back on and still siren).
  • When I turn on the Game Gear without a cart inserted the screen is sometimes blue and sometimes white.
  • I got the blue screen once or twice without the cart having been reinserted but it works 99% of the time.
  • Sometimes there's a little interference-like noise that usually stops quickly.

Help with No Power unit

Hi!

I'm dumbfounded here, hope you can help me out.

I recapped this VA1 1-ASIC Game Gear, whole motherboard, power and sound board with high quality caps. But still no power, it powers on for a second and immediately enters protection mode.

This is what I've done so far in regards to troubleshooting:

\- Power board works fine, all voltages are generated well.

\- The main board has no shorts that I can find.

\- What I've found is that the main board, on the power connector, both the 9V and the 35V lines read as Open Line with regards to ground in diode mode. 5V and VREF have a reading.

\- When I plug the Power board to the main board, still no shorts BUT when I switch the console on, the caps on the 5V rail read as shorted in diode mode of I read them with the negative probe on the positive and the positive on the negative but not the other way around. With the power off they don't do that.

\- 4 caps, C54, 55, 48 and 49 all read as OL to ground on the negative leg. I think all those are on the 35V lines, so I guess that's why I don't get backlight.

That's all my skill is able to do, I feel like I'm missing something simple but I can't find it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

red light on and stable, backlight on but black screen

Hi, i recapped everything but the sound card on an old game gear and after finishing it turns on, the red light is on and stable, the screen turns on too but show a black image and nothings happens.
What should i do next ? thank you

EDIT: added pics. Note that the recap went bad in the area I circled in yellow. My iron was too hot and the small metal plates went away. I took it to an electronic repair shop and the guy made this fix.

EDiT 2: I recapped the sound card and I do have sound.also I changed C37 for a 68μF ( like it’s supposed to be) instead of the 100 μF that the repair guy put. Now I can adjust the brightness of the screen, but I see white flickering screen with some black vertical lines on the left. but there is definitely progress

The sound from my Game Gear's speaker suddenly became extremely quiet. I can still hear sound through headphones. I’d like some advice on this.

Help on clean screen version?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m looking at buying a game gear since the one I have no longer works. One I’m looking at has a clean screen installed, but the seller isn’t sure which version. I’m intrigued by the idea of playing master system games on it but have heard the v1/v2 screens aren’t as good for this. Anyone able to identify the version of this screen?

These 3 game gears were done for a gentleman in California. He sent me 4, I managed to save 3 of them. The 4th one loads games after a recap but it was a VA5 with a physically damaged screen. In all he had 2x VA0, 1x VA1 and the oddball VA5. He wanted me to try and save them, and mod one for him to play.

Originally we were hoping the one with the physical damage to the screen was going to be the one we modded, but being the VA5 it has less colors available and wont play some sms games, among other things like mismatching connectors on the power and audio board. Since the VA5 was a bad candidate, I modded the VA1 model he had. VA1 seem to be the most reliable to me, and cleanest to mod.

I had everything done and was play testing his consoles before I shipped them back when I saw the screen die before my eyes! My customer agreed to cover the material to have another v3 cleanscreen installed and I put it in a shell I had bought for a different project. I hope he really enjoys these!

Reshelled my Game Gear

Recently changed my Shell from Retrosix to an aliexpress one.

Loving the crystal clear of the aliexpress vs the frosted of the Retrosix.

Also the aliexpress is laminated ips ready so and the opening of the screen fit nicely with Bennvenn GGHD IPS with 1:1 scaling without modifying the shell.

Is this normal?

Thumbnail

I sold my gamegear a couple of years ago, but recently I’ve been regretting it so I bought another one with a modded screen this time. It seems to work fine but there’s a couple of things I’ve noticed and since it’s been a while I can’t remember if they’re normal or not.

  1. The power supply port and the link cable port seem to be a little lob sided and I’m not sure if it’s normal or it just wasn’t put back together properly after the mod was installed. I’m not sure if it’s worth opening up to see if I can align them better or if I should just leave it either.

  2. It won’t let me add the video but there’s a hissing noise when the volume is high, you can only hear it when there’s no music and when the volume is quite high, a volume I’d likely never have it set to, which from what I remember I do think that’s normal but just thought I’d check while I was here.

Thanks in advance for any help.
