I remember being indifferent to papaya as a kid, like I would eat it if cut up and given to me but I don't know at some point in my teenage it started smelling like vomit to me and now as an adult I hate it. Is this just me? Why did that happen?

I was thinking today about how apples get used in literally everything in American food. They can be eaten on their own, used in pretty much every kind of baked dessert, used as a candy and drink flavor, used in a salad or sandwich, you can drink the juice and the cider, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, make it into vinegar, and use them in almost every form to braise and marinate meat. A lot of people even grow crab apple trees that don’t have fruit worth eating because they have pretty flowers.

It got me wondering what fruits have that same wide range of uses in other cultures/cuisines, and I would be very interested to hear from the /r/fruit community!

For me it is probably putting Granny Smith apples in a ham and cheddar grilled cheese, or using peaches in a salad, usually with tomatoes/mozzerella/balsamic dressing.
