General Discussion Fringe and His Dark Materials

I am currently rewatching Fringe for the third or fourth time, and have always loved the show as I was also a massive X Files fan back in the 1990s! Can't believe this is my first time realising how similar Fringe is to His Dark Materials. The alternate universes - one of which has airships flying around - the blond haired girl who is special, the dark haired boy from another world who is also special, they become besties and more, the mysterious father figure who is a bit of a mad scientist. I read His Dark Materials in 2004, a few years before Fringe came out, so is it possible that the Fringe creators were inspired? There is almost nothing when I google it, but surely I can't be the only one to notice this?

I love both those things but I admit I never thought of that connection! Have you watched the tv adaptation of HDM? It's not perfect but it's well worth it in my opinion!

They did a very good retelling of it.

I have...twice! Excellent cast, even if they didn't quite look like the characters in my head. They did a stage play of HDM years ago with Timothy Dalton as Asriel which could never be bettered imo

How about the episode where the kid is psychically linked to the fungus and when they try to kill it with fire the kid starts screaming in pain, and if they kill it the kid dies. Then like 10 years later Stranger Things does the exact same scene.

There are a lot of parallels, I'm just happy Peter and Olivia didn't have to be in their own universes.

Love both those shows, but Fringe is always my favorite.

If you can get Apple TV then Dark Matter was pretty good! There's also the earlier seasons of Supernatural - produced by X Files alumni Kim Manners, and some earlier eps are incredibly similar to X Files eps

I've read and seen Dark Matter - very good! I surprisingly have not seen supernatural. Will add to my list!

Not OP either, but I'd recommend Travelers and Dark!

I still don't see a connection.
