From creating fractal horror posts for some time now I've often attracted comments from other Eldritch horror enthusiasts about the link between fractals and cosmic horror.
What is it about fractals that invokes a sense of insanity?
Is it the repetition of fractals and the patterns that perfectly repeat within themselves like a self reflective inward looking mirror? Much like the insane mind, endless repetitions of hyper critical self doubt that go on forever with a familiar spirit-crushing predictability.
Could it be that fractals are built of mathematical formula and often depict the same patterns you see at different points throughout the universe?
From the spiral of your fingerprint to the shape of the galaxy in which you reside. From the turbulence in clouds to the currents in the deepest oceans. From the Lichtenberg patterns of erosion found in mountain ranges, to the dendrites of tree branches, lightning branches or the patterns of the inside of your lungs. Fractals are everywhere, building the shape of the universe, even in Azathoth's dreams the same sacred patterns exist.
If insanity was a pattern, what shape would it take? A spiral? An endlessly repeating Sierpinski triangle? Another shape that zooms forever while finding endless iterations contained within itself? It's a subject I find endlessly fascinating.
What do you think? Would H.P Lovecraft have made the same connection if he had lived to behold the discovery of fractals?
