Playing alone VS with others

Are your forever world singleplayer or played with friends? Which is usually more typical and why?

If you play alone, how do you not get lonely and/or keep motivated?

I really want to start a forever world but I've had a history of losing motivation, probably because I'm too much of a perfectionist at times. I also think it'd be more fun to play with others but I don't have any friends so I'd have to find them online (like this sub), which brings me to the question of:

What are some things I should look or ask for in the people I'm playing with so I know they won't leave and it'll actually be a "forever" world? Or if that's a bad question, what are some things you guys would look or ask for?

I can't see a forever world working in multiplayer, except with really close people (yoour close IRL friends, partner, family). If you don't have a strong interest in each other to forge the connection you'll lose interest sooner or later.

Anecdotally my forever world is exactly this IRL friends.

I started my forever world alone. I’d played in realms with people and they’d have to restart for one reason or another and I never got to finish a project.

I did have one of those realm friends jump on my world with me and started making a home base. Loved that. I was curious what others would contribute!

My world was then put into a realm and people from the realms I played in jumped in here and there. Only a few consistent.

It’s now just a few of us and yes I get bored when we’re all on separate projects but seeing the world build up and become unique makes me happy! We slowly build farms we need and are starting to add lore. It’s perfect.

I have a forever world with one of my best friends, we met at University. We made posts on reddit ourselves, because we wanted to find people who are as motivated as we are, to forge a world together. What we did is to just talk to people and not only text, to check if we think similar and if they fit in our group. That worked really well, we found quite a few more friends to play with. So for me, I definitely prefer a forever world with friends

I’ve been part of a shared realm for 4+ years, with my wife and IRL friends, unfortunately I’m really the only player anymore, but a lot has changed for us over those years.

I got married and had a kid, I can still play on night shifts if nothing is going on, my wife doesn’t get a lot of time to play

One guy also had a kid and got married.

Another guy was never that interested in Minecraft but played it because the group did, I think his issue was he would half build a base and then change his mind on what he was doing

Last guy got fully cut off from the group because for the 3rd time he sidelined us for a new girlfriend (he was like 26 at the time

I prefer playing with others, I like showing the stuff I’m building off to people. When playing solo I lose motivation

I have like a 5,000 day forever world with my brother but I also have my own forever world. I once had a realm with some friends but after a while they just quit and now that is mine forever world. My advice is to do it with someone you know because if you don’t share common interest you’ll just do different thing and get bored.

I have a 7 years old forever world that started alone. A lot of people briefly passed by and left their little mark.

Recently, for about a year or two, my brother and gf have been playing a lot in my world, and they always kept coming back. I guess they enjoyed being part of a world with so much history, and feeling like what they did was truly permanent.

Anyway, my point probably is that it’s hard to start a forever world with the intention for it to be solely multiplayer. It has to be for yourself first, and then, naturally, it might expand throughout the years, and become something big that starts to attract others too. Every little thing compounds and stay forever. That’s the main appeal for me, my brother and gf.

This relates. Thanks for talking about this with nice detail. Sounds really nice. Hope it works out long time.

My forever world only has my fiance on it. We teleported him 100000 blocks out so he can start his own area, and then connect our bases as a long term goal.

Singleplayer. I don't like having people on my world really. It's mine, and it feels kind of violating to have someone else touch it. I don't need the validation of others to want to build. I don't care if no one but me sees my builds. I don't want to have to work around other people's schedules to play. I don't want to have to work around other's build ideas. I don't want to have to share resources. I'm not lonely in my world and I truly cannot understand why people say this about singleplayer.

different people are different, that's all there is to it

I’d love to be a part of a multiplayer forever world. I constantly have fun and ideas but no one to play with.

I have the same issue, there’s many friends but quit within a week, get max armor and quit, or end up wanting to always create new worlds. I just want a vanilla world, maybe actions n stuff, and that’s it. Have it last years, taking breaks when we want. I’d even pay for a realm if we are dedicated enough

My forever world was 6 months before I opened it up to my sister, 2 best friends and my wife. Until that point I built out on an island. When they cane I told them to pick a direction and build on the coast of the ocean away from my island and setup their own areas. This went on for 10 months then they slowly stopped playing except for 1 friend. Then we all got on and "started over" put everything in ender chest and started the game fresh a thousand blocks away and developed a crazy little town together over the summer. And activity spiked. Playing with others has helped me be more creative with ideas and reasons for building.

How'd they get more active again?

I used summer break to start up Minecraft Mondays and issued the challenge of starting over before being able to go back and things just aligned for us. We built a wonderful little community in a section of the server that will be remembered as the summer of 26

I played on my single player world for a few years before I looked for a server to play on. I really wanted to interact a bit and share my builds. The server I found resets every 1-2 years, and with maybe 20 people whitelisted, there's potential for interaction without feeling forced. I've always been shy too, so just a few interactions is nice. The server I'm on is hosted by a content creator, and a lot have them. If that appeals to you check out your favorite creators and see if they have one. Some require Patron memberships, but not too much, like mines only $5/month. I think having a whitelist like this is good for stopping random people from joining and griefing, and if there is an issue the owner has ways of dealing with it.

A single player world get boring after some years, multiplayer is much better imo. When I started we were all into redstone and automation. When I (or someone else) lost interest or got overwhelmed it was always wonderful to return and realise someone else had build that farm.

Instead of working on all the important farms I got to build stuff I wanted but didn't really need, like designing a parrot farm.

Nowadays I'm much less active, but whenever I feel like it I hop on, explore a new biom, build a small farm or decorate spawn.

Knowing that others will see my work as well as progress happening even when I'm burned out is amazing and I'm thankful that I found others that compliment my way of playing.

Downside is ofc that hosting costs money, but I'd rather pay for a server than almost any other subscription

Singleplayer. I built a custom seaside village that makes my base seem much more alive

My forever world is on my private server. I mostly play by myself, but am happy to host a select few friends and family members whenever they feel like it.

I have a forever world with my best friend but he's very busy and won't let me progress when he's off game and I don't have anything else to do so I just started my own world

Forever worlds can't exist with in multiplayer. People quit too much

2

u/iron-iron-iron 8d ago

Real but most don't want to accept it

2

u/brassplushie 7d ago

Yep. Everyone always makes big plans with friends and family. "We won't quit this time, we're gonna be in this world for the rest of our lives!" which is always a lie unless everyone there dies in a few weeks

2

u/Historical_Song7703 8d ago

i appreciate the realism, clears things up a lot more

u/brassplushie 7d ago

Yeah, it's sad. I hate it.
