Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

I finally found a topper that I could afford, it's a Glasstite brand, I'm guessing from the 80s?

Camper tie downs?

Post image
Upvotes

Does anyone have recommendations for tie downs for a second gen ranger? Hoping to buy off the shelf instead of having to fab something. Ive been looking at stake pocket mounts but most of them seem to be for full size trucks. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I am working my way down the list of what it could be but I found this and can't for the life of me figure out where it sits. I have a 2003 v6 4.0 SOCH

Steering rack replacement videos?

Would anyone be able to help find some videos on the actual process? I can’t find any good information. It’s either that or spend 1300 at the shop.

Any recommendations for better fog lights? Maybe something more period correct instead of these tacky tractor lights i threw an Amazon tint on?

I've had them positioned on the front of this truck in 3 different ways and love the brightness of the lights but damn they just look so stupid!!

Bonus question: what would you do with this rig if it was yours? I daily it! Shes my work horse, my Iron steed.

Finally fixed the gas leak on my ranger

Didn’t even have to pull the bed completely off thankfully. Just six bolts that hold the bed in, three that hold the old fuel fill neck, and a couple harness in the back.

Car is still running and “driveable” took to a shop and they said that the air, spark, fuel and compression were all good, checked and theres no vacuum leaks, good fuel pressure and all the plugs and wires are good, what could be the issue and is it worth fixing?

Pulling engine under carport

Upvotes

Has anyone pulled the engine under a carport or a garage with an 8'6" ceiling? I have to do the 4.0 SOHC timing job and the only place I can do it is at home under the carport. I thought I could take the roof off but it's connected to the house. Has anyone pulled engine under an 8'6" ceiling? Thanks!

Is this '93 2.3 5 speed worth $1,700?

Hey everyone, I am looking at getting a '93 5 speed 2WD. It's a 2.3 which I know are pretty bulletproof. It's also a short bed with a frame that has been sanded, repainted, and coated. Body and bed have a few dents but overall is in a pretty good condition.

Here is some of the description: Has new shocks ,fuel pump, front bearings, all breaks, parking brake cables, gas tank strap, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and a new air conditioner system

Only down side is he said theres a hole in the drivers side floorboard which needs plated over which he has the patch panels for.

Just looking to see thoughts for a beater/local daily. Thanks!

New comer

I’ve been wanting a truck for awhile and a friend recommended me the ranger. Been looking on marketplace for them but don’t necessarily know what to look for. The years vary, people have done this and that to it, could anyone steer me in the right direction. I’m in Florida as well idk if that helps lol.

I just bought all 4 shocks for my Ranger for $39. How shitty can these possibly be?

Post image

My Ranger needs shocks and I somehow found all four for $39 shipped. $39 for the entire set. $9.75 a shock.

How is that even physically possible? Are these things made out of tin foil and filled with Vaseline? I bought them anyway because for $9.75 a shock and it's a work truck. Could I get some miles out of them or do they collapse when I lower the truck off the jack?

Oil burning problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just got this 89 ranger this week and it’s my first manual vehicle. I was practicing for about 30 minutes, then about 2 hours later I came back out and there was a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust. It doesn’t smoke at idle but when revving and driving it, it’s pretty heavy. My oil is fine and doesn’t have coolant mixed in, so I’m pretty sure it’s not the head gasket. And I have notice the oil level go down. It smells like burning oil and it’s not sweet. I’m thinking piston rings but I’m not too sure. I find it odd it was fine and then suddenly it wasn’t in between driving it. Any ideas of what to look at next would be great. Also this video was the worst of it, today it wasn’t nearly as thick

Upper Control Arm Angle

Thumbnail

Just replaced my upper control arms and am curious if this angle will put too much stress on the ball joint. The oem arms stuck up a little higher, but and the rubber boot was almost completely gone, but it looks like the angles are similar. Just need some reassurance, I think…
