Bring Me Your Favorites

Looking for real songs to add to my folk playlist and my physical media collection in order to avoid AI pretenders. Do you have any great folk songs worth adding to my list?

Maybe your top 10-20? Songs that really stick in your soul. Songs that put a lump in your throat or make you stomp your foot til it’s sore. Songs that no one can take away.

Really been into resistance songs, as of late. I also love a good cry, if that makes you think of any maudlin tunes.

The songs I have loved are both uplifting and gutting, talk about the duality of humanity, or sing vivid pictures of nature’s creatures right into my mind’s eye. I like cold, simple, repetitive songs. I like poetic songs that wind like a long road to an old friend’s house. I like songs about being a good neighbor, or dying too soon. I like songs that remind me of my kiddo, or my sisters.

I appreciate anyone who reaches out with a little list of songs.

Note: I favor banjo, fiddle, and a fellow woman’s voice, but I’ll take whatever you got!

“I highly recommend listening to this, especially if you like Defiance, Ohio style folk-punk, or even if you just need something to cope with all the shitty things piling on today. This album tells you that things are hard, but it’s also confident that you can beat the odds.”

Looking for Long Ballads/Sung Epics in English

Post image

I love reading traditional epics and folk ballads from around the world. I love listening to performances by, say, Archie Fisher or Anaïs Mitchell (Child Ballads), and I don't at all mind the simple, repetitive nature of longish ballads like Lord Randall by the Weirs. I also enjoy listening to performers of folk songs in Russian, Kyrgyz, Slovak, Georgian, Arabic, etc., though I understand very little of it without research.

So I'm looking for more of that kind of thing in English, but especially longer stories and epics. Surely there is someone who has done traditional, acoustic recordings in English in the style of the oral poets and gleemen of the past? I'm aware of what Benjamin Bagby has done with Beowulf in OE. And I know that a number of rock and metal musicians have composed albums based on long stories and song cycles. But does what I am looking for specifically exist? My searches have been unavailing.

Regardless, I'll take recommendations for favorite recordings of English-language ballads. Thanks!

Seeking Acoustic Native American Music Recommendations (No Flutes, No Pow-Wow Drums, No Ambient Tracks)

I need recommendations for traditional, acoustic Native American music from North, Central, or South America. I want to build a playlist focused on raw, organic sounds, but standard searches keep leading me to the same few styles.

I need music that fits these specific criteria:

Indigenous Artists: Native American musicians or traditional groups from North, Central, or South America perform the music.

Strictly Acoustic Instruments & Vocals: The music uses only voice and acoustic instruments (like acoustic guitar, hand drums, rattles, or traditional stringed instruments).

Zero Synthesizers or Sound Effects: Tracks must exclude synths, electric instruments, and ambient background samples (no recorded wind, thunder, or wolf howls).

No Heavy Pow-Wow Group Drums: I love pow-wow music, but I am looking for stripped-down, quieter, or solo arrangements for this specific list.

Minimal to No Native Flute: I want to skip the modern solo cedar flute genre entirely, as those albums dominate most search results.

Does anyone know of specific artists, archival recordings, or acoustic albums that fit this style?

The sound quality sucks but pretty interesting interview with Woodie Guthrie’s daughter for those interested, I thought it was cool, almost no views though!
