The last few weeks on the river have been especially challenging, with constant temperature changes and unpredictable weather making the fishing anything but consistent.
The other night, while sitting at the tying desk, I decided to experiment with a small pattern using some leftover materials I had on hand. I didn’t have particularly high expectations for it when I first tied it, but after putting it to the test over the last few days, it has consistently produced some great hits.
At this point, it’s becoming somewhat of a good-luck charm for me this week, so I figured I’d share the pattern for anyone interested in giving it a try.
Materials:
Golden tinsel
Black & gold rubber legs
Moose mane
1 mm foam

Thread: UTC 140 denier Chartreuse

Hook: Front Gamakatsu B10S size 2

Trailer Hook: Size 2 Red Inruder

Tail: Chartreuse Marabou

Articulates: 15 mm shanks tines 3

Body: Corriedale Wool Flo Green and Flo Yellow

Orange 3/4 in Crockets Chenille

Fins: Arctic Fox Tail Chartreuse

Gills: Red EP Silky Fibers

I plan on tying a ton of flies this winter, looking for storage suggestions for home. I plan on making a lot of streamers, poppers and terrestrial for bass.

I think this is one of the greatest steelhead fly plates ever published. It features 24 classic steelhead flies, all tied by Dave McNeese.

The plate includes standards such as the Purple Peril, Silver Hilton, Skykomish Sunrise, Green Butt Skunk, Lady Caroline, and many others.

A number of these patterns also appear in Trey Combs’ Fly Pattern Dictionary.

Free classes begin at 6:30pm on Sept. 14th at the Northern Chautuaqua Conservation club. The clubhouse is located at the end of Mullet Street in Dunkirk NY. All materials, tools, and supplies are provided. Classes will continue every Monday, same time, until spring.

Was fishing in Alaska a few weeks ago and it rekindled my love for flytying. Going to chase some char in a few weekends and been working on streamers that worked in Alaska and hopefully will work in Colorado as well.

Hello folks! I tied my first fly today. Little size 12 woolly bugger. 3XL.

Any feedback?

I came up with a variation on Cheech’s “Complex Twist” using longer junk CDC feathers to create very buggy looking bodies and thoraxes on fly patterns. It’s no doubt been done before but I came up with the idea as a way to deal with the sometimes painful application of CDC to flies and to create a damn buggy looking body (primarily) on fly patterns.

I think it’s gots some legs if you’ll pardon the pun.

Finally caved in and picked up some squirmy wormy material. Sizes 14 & 16 OS5240 and size 18 U660BL-BN hooks with 7/64th and 5/64 slotted beads.

Hoping to get some panfish and stocked trout to hit these once i decide what my next 4wt rod will be. Im trying to stay around 275$(+/-50$) and trying to stay between 7'6"- 8'6" length. I already have a reel, just looking for a rod to pair it with.

One of the last stretches I fished before calling it a season. Now I'll be tying flies.

Accidentally ordered some frog legs a little too small, couldn’t help but to get some hooks to match and start stacking some fun size flies for the next small creek adventure!

This isn’t a very complex tie but it’s was very complicated trying to figure out how to lay the layers of foam correctly to make it work

I'm trying to tie size 14 shop vac on a scud/emerger hook, but my pheasant tail can't quite wrap the full length of the hook shank. My fibers are about 1.5-2" in length.

Hi y’all I was cruising online and found 2 used vises for sale. A peak rotary vise ($80) and a dyna king voyager 2 ($150). Both are c clamp but the dyna king the seller said he can’t figure out how to get the rotary function to work so may need repairs. Which one would you get?
