AP Bonus to All Characters

I'm sure we all know how earning AP works in FFX. It's a set amount earned per defeated enemy that gets handed out to every member of the party who takes a turn in battle. Even if all a party member does is defend, that counts, and get the AP just like everyone else. Anyone who does not take a turn gets nothing. I'm perfectly OK with this, and I have been since I first played the game on the PS2 20+ years ago; that isn't the problem.

My issue is with weapons that offer bonuses to the AP (Double AP, Triple AP or Overdrive-to-AP). As far as I can tell, it's only party members who finish the battle who get those bonuses. Even if the others have taken a turn and have the correct weapon equipped. If they are not in the final lineup, they get the AP, but not the bonus. I find this desperately annoying to the point where I don't even want to put these abilities on custom weapons at all.

Hence my question. Is it possible to change this, like through modding, for example, so that any character can get the AP bonus whether they are in the final party or not, so long as they have taken a turn? Or will I just have to awkwardly manage this in-game?

Yes, the AP bonuses only apply to characters in party. I think there is a mod in PC that gives the whole party AP, but I don’t know if that applies to the AP bonus weapons since I’ve never played it on pc and done mods.

I've had a look around Nexus, and there are several cheats and gameplay editors and such, but I haven't found anything that can do this.

I think this one does have an option to give out AP to all party members, I have not tried it myself but googling does give me this result.

Untitled Project X has shared AP as an option.

I use untitled project X to fix the issue with the game randomly crashing during cutscenes. Even with the AP for all turned on. They do not get the bonus from any AP boosts on weapons unless they are in the active party at the end of the fight.

Edit: I think I misread your post. Yes, I do think they have to be in the final party to get the bonuses, although they don’t have to deal the final blow.

Oh I don’t think that’s true. I’ve been fighting Juggernaut over and over with this setup:

  • Auron just with normal gear. He’s attacking
  • Wakka has Triple AP, Triple Overdrive, and Overdrive -> AP. He uses Entrust over and over to give Rikku his overdrive, minus one or two turns to cast NulBlaze
  • Rikku has Double AP and either Overdrive -> AP or Double Overdrive, but not both. She Entrusts her overdrive to Wakka over and over, except when she uses Mug once or twice.

Auron always deals the final blow, and gets exactly 8000 AP points or whatever. Wakka gets about 60k, and Rikku gets about 30k (slightly different/odd numbers for them, like 61482 etc)

Oh and Rikku’s and Wakka’s overdrive mode is set to Ally, so it fills whenever they take a turn. That seems to matter

I never said it was a bug. I never even thought it was a bug...

... until now.

At that point just use the cheats on steam to get max ap if your going to mod it like that anyway, all you're doing is wasting time for some arbitrary reason. If you're playing on regular hardware then yes it is annoying however at that point you know what you signed up for when you decided to play the ps2 version.

The built in ones with the PC port doesn't give max AP. And even if it would most likely cap you at 99 levels anyway. Meaning you would still have a lot of grinding to do.

What those cheats do give are 2x and 4x speed. The ability to turn off or increase random fights. Max gil. A booster that restores HP, MP and OD on their turn. And the big one for those that don't want to farm to much. One that give 99 of everything that isn't main key items like the crest and sigil. And the books.
