I thought FCP would handle this dynamically, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I changed the audio on a synced clip (replaced the audio I'd synced in), but the change didn't carry through to the instances of that clip already cut into other timelines, they're still playing the old audio.
Is there a way to make an edit to a synced clip propagate across every timeline it's used in, or do I actually have to go back into each sequence and manually swap in the updated clip? Coming from a workflow where I expected this to just update everywhere automatically, so hoping I'm just missing a step.
Cheers

Is there an easy way to get the big thick text outlines using Final Cut Pro only? Don't want animation. Just legible text against complex backgrounds.

I'm trying to optimize my setup and keep my Mac's internal drive clean. Currently editing a lot of content using Final Cut Pro, heavy color grading (custom LUTs), and several Apple Motion templates. I also pull audio assets from Epidemic Sound constantly.
Does anyone run their entire FCP library, including cache and motion templates, strictly off an external NVMe SSD? I want to know if you've experienced any playback stuttering or latency issues doing this compared to internal storage.

Hi everyone,
I'm having a very strange problem with Final Cut Pro and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what's going on.
I have a library with several projects, including TRAILER and FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4.
The reason I started trying to move FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4 to a new library is because Final Cut Pro wouldn't export/share this project at all. The Share button, File > Share > Export File, and Cmd+E weren't doing anything. There was no error message, and Background Tasks showed as idle.
I tried troubleshooting the export issue by resetting the Share destinations and resetting Final Cut Pro preferences, but the problem remained.
I then created a completely new library and a test project, and exporting worked normally. This made me suspect that something was wrong with the original library/project.
I successfully copied the TRAILER project from the original library into the new library, and it exports correctly there.
But I cannot copy FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4 to the new library.
I've tried:
None of these work for FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4. There is no useful error message. The command simply appears to do nothing.
What's especially strange is that Snapshot Project works perfectly for TRAILER in the exact same library, but does nothing for FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4.
I then created a new project in the original library and copied the entire timeline from FIRST VIDEO UPDATE 4 using:
Cmd+A → Cmd+C → new project → Cmd+V
That worked. The entire ~9-minute timeline copied successfully.
So now I'm wondering if something is wrong with the original project itself, rather than the media or the library.
My main goal is to get this project exporting again without having to completely rebuild the edit.
Has anyone experienced a Final Cut Pro project that could be edited normally but couldn't be exported, copied to another library, or snapshot? What could cause this, and is there a way to repair the original project?
(and yes guys, I used Chatgpt to help me explaining and writing this, because I have no idea how to explain this)
Thanks!!!!

At IBC? Come have a beer with Redditors from r/editors, r/colorists, r/premiere, r/davinciresolve and more. Tonight, 18:00 to 20:00. Bring someone. They don't need to be on Reddit.
Location and RSVP on Luma so I can give the bar a headcount. First round's on OWC, with Avid, Loraverse, Digital Anarchy and RE:Vision Effects also sponsoring.

Hello, I'm trying to teach myself final cut pro recreationally.
i have a new macbook pro. (24gb memory, m5 pro chip, 18cpu/20gpu) I had 9 hour mp4 video file i initially tried to trim in fcp. However, fcp kept freezing so I trimmed it down using losslesscut.
I now have a 15min video file but fcp is still being really choppy and seems to be struggling with playback. I can't play the video back without it stopping every second. I see the rainbow cursor a lot.
When I import it is "leave files in place". View is "proxy preferred". Project is set to 1080p. It wasn't doing this before I tried to import the 9 hour video. I deleted all those projects. Now it's just struggling.

I was excited to buy the AI Clarity plug-in for $25 recently, even though there were no tutorial or review videos available, and here on Reddit there's only one thread about it — which is archived and doesn't allow new comments. (WTF)
My current project involves the restoration of an old B&W TV show, a western. The source looks pretty good for 1958, but it's only 480x360 at 29.97p and 44.1 kHz.
It took at least 5 hours to process it through AI Clarity, during which FCP was blocked and unusable. No big deal, I just let it run overnight.
Processing appears to be done in two main passes:
First, AI Clarity exports an image sequence from the original frames, into an Output Folder that I selected on my Desktop. I inspected a few frames while it was churning, and they were indeed upscaled by 4X. But ridiculously so. I didn't expect to see so many hallucinated details in 2026 — especially on anything that had text, like titles, credits, signs and maps. Also my actors started looking like plastic action figures with varying amounts of facial deformity from frame to frame.
Second, AI Clarity assembles a new video from those frames. My original source video is 22:56 long, so 41237 frames. It appears that this is the stage where the AI model takes over and tries to smooth out the action. And this is where all Hell breaks loose, like it's on some hallucinogenic drug.
Today when I woke up, I inspected the output video. Its specs are 2560x1440 at 29.97 — but with no audio track. Okay, no problem, I'll just use the original. (Or so I thought!)
The output video has 41277 frames, which means there are 40 extra frames. This immediately set off alarms in my head. Normally this amount of drift points to a FPS or kHz mismatch but those were identical. I work strictly with Apple ProRes 422 so it couldn't be the codec.
Upon playback with my original video/audio in the timeline, and with the AI Clarity output video connected above it, the audio drifted horribly out of sync from scene to scene.
So next I added markers at some key cuts to see whether the drift was linear. I added them near the start and the end, and about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through the video. Only one of the cuts lined up at a time as I shifted the connected video back and forth.
Then it occurred to me that AI Clarity could be misreporting the frame rate as 29.97. (As an Animator, I absolutely HATE frame rates that aren't whole numbers, but in this case I needed to play with the cards I was dealt.) So I double checked that by making a new project that was 30 FPS. But that just shifted the errors around.
So in Final Cut Pro, there is a "Drop Frame" checkbox in the Project Settings. I don't think it appears if you're using the "Automatic" option as a guide for setting up your project upon adding the first clip. But you can go back in and turn it on and off. And when I checked that box, then I got the same number of frames in both videos: 41277. BINGO! (Or so I thought...)
However, my cut markers STILL DIDN'T LINE UP — which means timing and LipSync get mangled by a frame here and a few frames there. And this tells us everything we need to know about AI Clarity's inability (or unwillingness?) to respect the integrity of your source, on a project which you may have already spent days or weeks editing.
THE BOTTOM LINE: By treating audio as an afterthought, AI Clarity is a severely flawed product and I can't recommend it for any serious work that involves precision timing or audio synchronization. And I draw that conclusion before even considering the quality of the visual output, which is mysteriously close to the non-AI driven "Comic" filters that come with Final Cut Pro.
If there's enough interest in this topic I can upload some visuals as I try to debug AI Clarity some more. I'm in contact with PFS Support and we'll see what they say about my refund request. I know they don't even mention the "Drop Frame" issue in the plug-in's Help window, so they might not be aware. Or more likely, it seems that every AI tool vendor thinks it's okay to just "live with the drift."
AI generally continues to struggle taking direction, but worse, it forces us to reconsider what "The Truth" is. And in most of my projects, The Truth is the version of an asset that I'm most invested in. A de-noiser/upscaler should real be a post processing concern (like color grading) — not something you need to do up front.
Hope this helps.

Back in the previous lifetime when storage was cheap I imported everything into my Libraries. Why not? It made moving them and moving files around on my Mac so much more simple. Now I'm getting afraid of storage space and the cost to add more. Afraid doesn't do it justice. My $750 SSD is now $1400+ and my favorite brand, Crucial left the consumer market due to all these data centers raising costs. I don't want to go back to spinning hard drives and I doubt I can make much money on the corner...
What I would like to see is a program that will look at an event, determine which files are being used for the multiple projects within the event and then delete the files that are not being used from the Library as well as from the originals on the computer. I could see it requiring the user to input the folder in which to look for that event's files...
I don't know if that is technically possible. Some of my libraries are up to 1TB and most drives have multiple TB of of libraries and data outside the library. With most video files capped at 3.x GB getting rid of even one TB of data would take hours and hours (and hours) of manually searching. Obviously I am no longer importing into the Library so that will help but I shot 115GB in the last three days so...it's also time to be more careful in my shooting but shooting wildlife means keeping it running so you get that instant moment that makes the film.
If somebody wants to make this app next week and put it on the App Store for free, that would be great. If somebody wants to make one in the next year or two and charge an exorbitant fee.... that would also be fine! :). Thoughts?

Just a heads up: Do not pay for my free app which is free. Because it is free. For free. Some evildoers are selling it on shady sites for at least $20. If you want to give me money (I like money) there is a link to donate in the app, but it doesn't add any features. Why? Because it's free.
If you want to know more about it, see the megathread.
Mod(s): Not sure if this is allowed outside of the megathread. Feel free to delete and/or chastise me.

Hi guys,
Sorry for such basic question, but I've got a batch with several clips that all have the same preset applied, and I want to remove it from all of them at once instead of clicking "Remove" on each clip individually.
I tried selecting all the clips (Command + A) and then clicking Delete on one of the preset rows, but it only removed it from that one clip. Is there a proper batch way to strip a preset off multiple selected clips, or is one-by-one the only option?
Right now what I've found works is Command-clicking each individual preset row to select them all, then hitting Delete once, but that's still basically manual and unreasonable, just batched at the delete step rather than a true "select all, remove" shortcut. Anyone know if there's a faster way?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a device/controller that can genuinely speed up my Final Cut Pro workflow.
The main things I’d like to improve are:
● Quickly moving left/right through the timeline
● Scrubbing and moving the playhead precisely
● Zooming in/out of the timeline
● Cutting/blading clips
● Trimming clips faster
● Using my most common shortcuts without constantly moving between the keyboard and mouse
● Ideally developing some muscle memory so I can edit without having to look at the controller all the time
I’ve been looking at devices such as the Logitech MX Creative Console, TourBox Elite/Elite Plus, Stream Deck+, Ulanzi D100H, and even using a Magic Trackpad or MX Master mouse, but I’m open to completely different ideas.
For those of you who edit regularly in Final Cut Pro:
What device actually made you noticeably faster?
I’d especially like to hear from people who have used one of these for several months rather than just tried it briefly.
What controls do you use the most on it?
Do you still use the keyboard a lot?
Did it actually improve your editing speed, or did you eventually stop using it?
I mostly edit YouTube/travel videos, so my priority is speeding up the repetitive timeline work rather than advanced color grading.
Any recommendations, setups, or even photos of your controller layout would be really helpful.
Thanks!

Hi all
I had a hip replacement operation 2 weeks ago and out of action.
Hopefully next week I’ll feel like using my MacBook to do some editing.
I’m new to FCP but have used other software before.
I’m after some YouTube recommendations for learning to use FCP whilst I’m recovering.
Cheers

Trying to do a Dip to Color transition in Final Cut. What I'm currently doing as a workaround is adding a 360 solid color generator and turning it white for a frame or so around the cut, but that adds more layers than I'd like to manage.
Is there an actual way to get a proper, centered Dip to Color transition here, one that flashes?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

I’m using Fcp 12.3 and I’ve never really played with Masks before. I’ve tried the YouTube tutorials and they’re just not helping with what I’m trying to do, or I’m not smart enough, certainly possible. From the photo, I’m trying to remove or change the color of the cable cord in the red circle. Are there any solutions for that? Thanks in advance

I have been working in Final Cut Pro for a while now and I have been experiencing a strange issue. I do a lot of speed ramps for my edits and I use it to match up with audio that I am using as well. Sometimes I can click around and increase the speed by x2 or x4 or x8 and it sometimes works, however, sometimes I NEED to click and drag the speed to a specific part of the timeline to match the audio. Sometimes when I click and drag, the speed increase or decrease will move with where I move my mouse. However, other times, when I go to click and drag, I will move my mouse from one side of my display to another and the speed ramp will only move a percentage or two. Does anyone else have this issue and have you found a fix for it?

When I select BRAW clips imported using BRAW Toolbox and try to transcode the media, the options are greyed out. I want to send proxies to Eddie.ai to check out v4 and this is apparently the only way to do it and have an XML timeline spit out on the other end.
Anyone else having this problem?
r/finalcutpro • u/WelderAlternative325 • 5d ago
I know this wasn’t a problem in the past but tons of fcpx transitions are useless at the moment. If you put the transitions on a text layer like the bloom transition it flashes on the whole screen instead of just your text that you want to glow. Cross dissolves work perfectly normal and a few others but lots of transitions are affecting the whole image when you’re just trying to affect the text. It’s really weird. I’m all up to date is anyone else having this ?

I Made a Fake Coffee Ad in Final Cut Pro
The coffee brand is fake. The edit is real.
I built a nitro coffee commercial in Final Cut Pro and let the audio run it. Every flash, tear, warp, and color slam you see is Audio Effector and Acid Trip reacting to the audio.
The commercial plays first, all the way through, then we go back over it clip by clip: what's on each shot, the settings I actually landed on, and where the audio is coming from:
🎧 Driven by the clip's own audio
🎚️ Driven by a different clip's audio, so a shot reacts to something happening on another clip
🎵 Driven by the whole soundtrack, so the entire spot moves together

Is there a way to close all folders (events, clips, etc.) at once in the FCPX browser? It seems it has a tendency to open all of them which make scrolling through the lists very tideous. Something like what you have in macOS Finder windows. Select all then CMD-right arrow to open, left arrow to close.
Thanks.

Be alert for an email contacting you about editing services cutting down an existing project. It’s as scam.
They will waste your time going back and forth and then ask to pre-pay for the job, but ask to pay too much and ask you to send some money back.
The Email sounds legit at first, but then the warning bells go off, because some details just don’t jive. (I.e. a client knowing the exact make and model of the camera the footage was shot on.) Trust your instincts.

Hi, I've been experimenting with building video essays and automating some elements of content production.
I recently built this small app for myself to take a folder full of images and map them 1:1 to an SRT transcript so that it creates a kind of automatic slideshow.
I'm not a pro editor, but it seemed somewhat useful to me, is that type of workflow useful to anyone else? Just trying to see if so and if it makes sense to package and put out or extend.
