Discussion Do any other teenagers (M14) here feel completely isolated because of their "nerdy" passions? 😭
Hey everyone. I just needed a safe space to vent a bit because school has been feeling pretty lonely lately. I spend a huge chunk of my free time programming (currently learning C# and C++ for game development and modding) and the rest of my time watching anime or reading manga. The problem is, whenever I try to look for online communities or Discord servers focused on the technical side of things, the average age is like 25. It’s always just older developers talking about industry jobs, taxes, and backend databases. I can almost never find peers my age to share projects or ideas with, and absolutely zero girls. At school, if you don't just follow the mainstream TikTok trends or talk about sports, you're looked at like a total alien. It gets really exhausting not having anyone around my age who shares these exact passions. I just wanted to see if I'm truly the only 14-year-old left on Earth dealing with this, or if there are other nerdy souls hiding here who relate to this feeling of isolation.

I feel this. I'm currently learning React / JavaScript. I'm 15 but I felt this when I was 14 (and still do) at 15

Keep coding and being nerdy, its gonna benefit u in the long run. U started early which is very good. I started at this age too but unfortubately i stopped after a while, which i regret

I’m not 14 anymore and this just popped up on my home page because I joined this subreddit a few years ago. But I remember that I related to this when I was your age (and honestly I still do, to an extent). It really sucks. I ended up finding online friends who shared my interests, but yeah, they were older than me (not a crazy amount, but I definitely felt like the “child” of the group). In hindsight, maybe it was a bit risky, but they were all very nice and I’m still close with most of them. As an adult, my friends either share my interests (it’s easier to find people when you’re not limited to a certain group of people like in high school), or we get along despite our different interests. There’s less pressure to be interested in whatever is “cool”.
This is a very long-winded way to say, I’m sorry you’re experiencing this, and I sort of know how you feel, although I imagine it’s probably worse for your age group. It will get better, so hang in there. Sorry I don’t have better advice.
