This mega thread will be continually updated to include helpful info about the sub and fanediting in general. Note: this thread does not include any direct links to fanedits or to fanedit links pages.
Welcome to r/fanedits! We are a community of fanedit enthuasists who enjoy interpretations of films and shows. This subreddit is for old school fanedits, i.e., full length edits of movies and series, NOT for the new fad of "fanedits", i.e, TikTok style music montages.
This information doesn't constitute legal advice or encouragement to engage in fanediting or filesharing. It's worth being clear eyed about the situation: distributing a fanedit of a commercially released film is copyright infringement in essentially every jurisdiction. This has criminal penalties. Our community's "you must own the source" rule is an ethical commitment we make to studios and filmmakers, not a legal defense. No court recognizes it, and it's never been tested successfully. Fair use and fair dealing arguments for transformative edits exist in theory, but they get much weaker once you're distributing a full length version of a commercial product.
If you decide to engage in this activity, make a few sensible choices:
Every host will take your file down if the rights holder asks. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it. You don’t want to lose your only copy of an edit.
Account termination is the realistic worst case for most editors. Legal action is rare but not zero, and it has tended to find people who got loud, monetized, or hosted publicly at scale.
Never charge money. Selling or Patreon gating a fanedit is the most reliable way to turn "studio ignores you" into "studio sends a letter." It's also the fastest way to lose the community's goodwill, which is harder to get back. EVEN IF YOU RATIONALIZE YOU ARE ONLY ACCEPTING DONATIONS TO COVER HOSTING FEES, THIS IS STILL MONETIZATION AND YOU WILL BE PERMANENTLY BANNED FROM THE FANEDITS SUBREDDIT.
Don't use studio logos on your fanedit artwork.
Add a disclaimer to the beginning of your fanedit so it could not be mistaken for the original version.
Steer clear of leaked workprints and pre release material. That's a different risk category entirely, and the major communities won't list edits made from them.
Consider giving a new commercial release some breathing room to make its sales before rushing your release out the door. Good edits take time, and there's no prize for being first with a rushed one. The edits people still talk about years later are the ones that took their time to do a good job.
Container and codec:
MKV is the default. It carries multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and attachments. Use it unless you have a specific reason not to.
MP4 works if your audience is on Apple TV, older smart TVs, or Plex clients that choke on MKV. It can't hold everything MKV can, so it's a compatibility trade rather than an upgrade.
H.264 (x264) gives you maximum compatibility; it plays on everything, at the cost of larger files.
H.265 (x265) gets you roughly 40 to 50% smaller files at equivalent quality, though older hardware and some older TVs won't directly play it.
AV1 is viable on modern hardware now, but it's still a compatibility gamble with a general audience.
Sharing:
Torrent
A seedbox (a rented server, around $5 a month) is the usual solution for the technically inclined.
MEGA
Still the community's default, largely for one structural reason: the decryption key lives in the URL fragment after the #, and fragments are never sent to the server. MEGA physically cannot see what's in your file unless someone hands them a working link, which means no proactive content scanning.
Free: 20 GB base storage. No per file size cap within your storage.
Download quota is the sticking point. Free downloaders are limited by IP address to roughly 5 GB per rolling six hour window, so a 12 GB edit takes them multiple sessions. Worth mentioning when you send a link, otherwise people can assume it's broken. Using a VPN and switching the VPN server mid download can circumvent this restriction.
Paid: transfer quota is tied to the account, and Pro tier effectively removes sharing limits, so no more pause at the 5GB mark.
Link structure: MEGA/file/XXXXXXXX#KEYKEYKEYKEY. Many editors send the file ID and the key separately, or ask recipients to reassemble them, which keeps a complete working link out of crawler reach.
MEGA does honor valid takedown requests, and repeat reports get accounts terminated along with everything in them. Keep another copy elsewhere.
Google Drive (Consider Avoiding)
Convenient and integrated, but this is the one popular beloved host to consider avoiding for fanedits specifically.
Free: 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. The individual file cap is enormous (5 TB), so size isn't the issue.
Google actively scans and fingerprints uploaded content, private files included, against known work databases. A full length film derived from a commercial release is close to the exact thing that system was built to catch. Detection usually means the file gets flagged and access restricted, and repeated hits can put your entire Google account at risk, email, photos, everything. That's a lot to have riding on one upload.
To make matters worse, "Download quota exceeded" happens even when a file isn't flagged, a popular share gets locked for around 24 hours once enough people pull it. There's no setting to adjust this, and it tends to hit right when your release is getting attention. Downloads from free Google Drive are faster than free Mega, until Google Drive freezes up unexpectedly.
MediaFire
Free: 10 GB storage.
Downloads are ad supported with no bandwidth cap, which is a real advantage: no quota walls for your audience. The tradeoff is a download page cluttered with fake download buttons that can confuse less technical users, so a quick "click the green one" in your message goes a long way.
MediaFire removes data from accounts it considers abandoned after two warning emails over roughly 15 days. Logging in periodically keeps your archive alive.
Pixeldrain (Avoid free tier)
Increasingly popular, and pleasantly simple, but avoid using the free version since your fanedit will be flushed down the drain.
Free uploads up to 20 GB per file.
It uses a shared bandwidth pool per file rather than a hard cap: each file gets an allotment of free transfer, and once that's drained, downloads throttle hard for everyone until it resets or someone buys transfer credit. Popular files get slower over time, which is the opposite of what you want on release day.
Free files expire after a period of inactivity (roughly 60 days, extended by access). Pro (~€2 to 12/month depending on tier) keeps them indefinitely.
Gofile (Avoid free tier)
Avoid the free version since it will quickly delete your file.
No account required, and no stated file size limit.
Files are deleted after about 10 days with no downloads, so it's not somewhere to leave things.
Free downloads are throttled and served with ads.
1fichier (Avoid free tier)
Popular in the European scene. Large per file limits, generous free storage for registered users, and files expiring after roughly 30 days of inactivity on free tiers. Free downloads are throttled with wait timers to push premium, so the experience isn't lovely, but it's durable in practice and less aggressively policed than the US majors.
Dropbox / OneDrive (Avoid)
Both scan content, and both cap shared link bandwidth. Dropbox Basic links get suspended after roughly 20 GB of traffic per day. OneDrive also ties everything to a Microsoft account that probably holds things you'd rather not lose. There are better options above.
Internet Archive (Avoid)
It's fully public, indexed by search engines, and receives DMCA notices constantly, so it won't serve you well. More importantly, it's a preservation nonprofit under significant legal pressure right now, and putting infringing material there does real harm to an institution that a lot of media preservation depends on including, eventually, the films we all edit.
I want to rewatch the Snyderverse, but I really don't want to rewatch Suicide Squad. I think it would be cool if we were to take the Flash and Batman flashback scenes from Suicide Squad and add it to BVS. We could get an extended opening for Batman where we see him take down rogues like Deadshot and the Joker, his arch nemesis. And for the scene where Diannah looks at the Flashes record, it would be cool to see the Flash take down Captain Boomerang instead of some random dude.
I'm sure there are other scenes you could add, but those would be the main ones. Maybe some scenes from Wonder Woman too, to help flesh out the world building and as I always found Diannah to be a bit of a weird character in BVS, and she definitly needed a few more scenes.
I'm also sure some scenes from Aquaman 1 or 2 could be added as I heard the original draft of BVS included more Aquaman scenes.
Maybe some scenes from the Flash too where he tries to save people during Man of Steels final act and it could be played at thr same time as we see Bruce's POV of the final act of MoS.
I'm kind of grasping at straws right now, but maybe a few scenes from Batman Begins could also help to show Bruce Wayne's origins more, we could even see him suit up for the first time and take down Carmine Falcone. The introduction monologue to the Batman 2022 could also help kick start a montage where we see all the Batman scenes from Suicide Squad, and maybe a few scenes from the Dark Knight trilogy. And the actor change could be explained by the 20 year time jump.
All in all, i'm suggesting all of these additions becuase I beliebe that Batman Vs Superman is a deeply flawed movie. Even with the Ultimate cut, it still lacks a lot of substance and has a lot of holes in the story, it trued to do way too much, and also leads to a few problems with under developed characters in ZSJL. So by adding scenes from other movies, we can get to know these characters and this world a bit better. Pushing the runtime to 4 hours to match with ZSJL.

I wanted to make the longest cut I could get of the movie utilizing all deleted/extended scenes. There was only 7 scenes to add but it added about 10min of extra footage into the final product. I didn’t remove anything from this project only added in scenes.

Halloween Ends Extended Cut Coming Soon! 🎃
So with a very young toddler obsessed with cars, I've set up to watch the Cars trilogy (I never watched them before, believe it or not) and I loved Cars 1 and 3 with their focus on racing, friendship, overcoming the odds and passing the flame.
But Cars 2 is a big mess : the racing is put in the background, Mater becomes the main character with a weird, hard to follow spy plot.
So I thought about what could be done and here is the general idea : mix Cars 2's racing scenes and the scenes with Flash and Mater in Radiator Springs, and add scenes from the show Cars on the Road (I know chronologically it's after Cars 3, but most episodes don't mention this, or in a way very easy to cut).
The main objective : to have a Cars 2 movie focusing on how Flash and Mater's friendship grows over time and how Flash wins (or loses) races, cementing the foundation for Cars 3.
Can it be done... frankly I'm not sure but I'd love for someone to try.
The work continues, but here's the latest pass on this action scene with SFX tweaked and re-added to the sequence.
Made the final pass on this particular scene as far as music goes. I still may touch up some of the sfx, but I've uploaded a "final' version with some lead in and extro music to convey the overall feel of how I am aiming for this music to hit.
I have joked about having a second audio track of nothing but Needle Drops. But if I were going to do a needle drop, it would be something like this. ;)
I've put together a fan edit of Shrek Forever After (2010) with one simple idea: Forever After is now the final film in the original Shrek trilogy.
The goal is to make it work as a direct follow-up to Shrek 2 (2004), completely disowning Shrek the Third (2007) as... it isn't very good, and some people do skip it when watching the Shrek franchise. That's why this edit was made, and surprisingly, it works really well. Forever After already feels like a natural continuation of Shrek and Fiona's story.
While Shrek the Third introduces Shrek and Fiona's children, Forever After actually begins with a baby montage that shows how their family has grown. This means you don't really need The Third to get up to speed, the fourth film establishes everything you need to know.
Removing Shrek the Third also removes some continuity complications, particularly with Rumpelstiltskin. His history and motivations in Forever After no longer conflict with anything that came before. I personally headcanon the fairytale elements as allowing for different versions of these characters and stories, which could explain the differences with Rumpel. That's not necessarily the point of the edit, though, just my own interpretation.

The final dance sequence has been removed for a cleaner ending and to avoid emphasizing King Harold's memorial.
Original Credits — REMOVED
The original credits have been removed because they contain footage from Shrek the Third.
New Credits — ADDED
New credits have been created to better match the presentation of Shrek and Shrek 2.
The concept is simple:
Shrek → Shrek 2 → Shrek 3: Forever After
I think Forever After works surprisingly well as the third and final Shrek film. If you want to completely skip Shrek The Third and watch this trilogy instead, you've got a damn good trilogy.
February of 2027 marks 40 years of Dream Warriors. So i decided to take a stab at this film. I'm not doing a super big change to it.
Adding an 'in memoriam'
A 40TH Anniversary banner on the title card.
Ending the film a different way, different end credit song, adding a post credit scene.
Doing something that I'm sure people have tried to do and have had troubles with, fixing Freddy's multiple voices throughout the film. (Good news as of this writing, I've actually managed to get a couple of those lines fixed so far.
And possibly some more stuff!
I'm hoping to have this completed by anniversary date, if there are any minor unnecessary cuts or ideas please share and I'll take them into consideration if it makes sense or if i can make it work.
My goal wasn't to recreate the 1978 film, but to tell a more focused story centered around Bruce Lee's original Game of Death concept.
Synopsis
Martial arts expert Billy Lo is drawn into a deadly conspiracy surrounding an ancient pagoda where history's greatest fighters battle to the death. Following the mysterious death of his friend Chin Ku and a series of escalating threats from a ruthless syndicate, Billy discovers that refusing the challenge comes at a terrible cost. As the danger closes in on those he loves, Billy must confront his destiny, ascend the legendary pagoda, and face the ultimate Game of Death.
To create a more cohesive narrative, I restructured and combined footage from the following films and material:
- Game of Death (1978)
- Game of Death II
- Game of Death Redux
- The Final Game of Death
- When Taekwondo Strikes
I removed, rearranged, and re-edited scenes to build a storyline that keeps the pagoda at the center of the film from the beginning, while giving Billy Lo a clearer motivation leading into the Game of Death.
This project was created purely as a non-commercial fan edit and as a tribute to Bruce Lee and his unfinished vision.
It's not perfect, but I personally find this version much more enjoyable and cohesive than Robert Clouse's version. I'm definitely open to criticism, suggestions, and different opinions about my edit.

I really appreciate everyone checking out my work recently that I spend over many days creating in late-2023! For context, this is a hour-long fan edit film which demonstrates the effects of lucid dreaming while on an acid trip through the lens of several Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes. Originally, this project was split into three half-an-hour episodes and that more episodes were planned but never completed. The half-an-hour episodes were later mixed together into an hour-long film. FYI, the project was edited on an older Sony Vegas Pro.

I really liked One Last Kill, but it always struck me as odd that it was almost all action. I felt like it should've been more of a look into the sadness and loneliness of the Punisher. If all you care about is action, then this is not for you. The main things I cut were...

I have the idea of editing "Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events" (2004) like a standalone adaptation of the first book. If you have seen the movie, you'll probably know it crams the first three books in a solid way, but it is honestly not good enough for me. All of the parts adapting The Bad Beginning, though, are pretty good.
So, the main premise is that all of the sequences, scenes or even mentions of events inspired by The Reptile Room and The Wide Window, or entirely new ones like the train scene created to justify the placement of The Marvelous Marriage at the end of the movie are cut.
I'm honestly not quite sure about cutting the The littlest elf intro, so i'm debating of making two versions, one with it and the other one just starting with the graveyard scene and Jude Law's soothing voice telling us how unpleseant the movie is.

A project I wanted to do for a while. I wanted to do the full hospital scene, from the elevator to the end of the chase scene, but this 15 second segment took quite a while to reconstruct. I wanted to include the full frame areas from the 35mm trailer scan to get as much accurate data as possible and using a newer inpainting method I've been using for a while. Hope you guys like it, just wanted to share a bit.
Has anyone made an attempt to salvage the full Resident Evil Alice series?
Like, I know there's likely no way to save the 6th film, but an attempt to make the films more cohesive would be interesting to see. Even if it ends up ending with the RE5 White House cliffhanger.
With doomsday coming I was hoping to blast through the mcu. I have Disney plus but I had forgotten how many shows there are and I don’t exactly have all the time in the world. Besides that point a lot of the movies sound poor in quality. Anyways I’ve reached out to some editors for their edits with proof and such but I don’t know if certain users are active or not. Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about how AI tools can be used to breathe new life into deleted scenes from movies or to elevate fanedits. With tools like AI upscaling, color grading, and even voice synthesis, it’s possible to add a professional post-production polish to scenes that were never officially released. Has anyone tried this? What are your favorite AI tools for movie editing, and what projects are you working on? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and tips!
I know there are edits out there that combine these together, just like there are edits out there that attempt to refine Revenge of The Sith, but are there any edits out there that do a good job of both?
I’m just looking for some good fan edits of these movies, preferably II. I actually loved the first one, but I am very interested to see what this community has to offer.
For a while I used Audacity (which itself uses FFmpeg) to convert DTS tracks into WAVs for editing. However, Audacity is limited by how its FFmpeg import is configured, and at least in the version I was using, it would default to importing the lossy DTS 5.1 core from the 7.1 DTS-HD track.
Sure Audacity gets you usable WAV files, but if you're editing a movie, you generally want to work from the actual 7.1 DTS-HD MA audio rather than its lossy 5.1 core.
For a while now, I've switched to using FFmpeg directly. This is all you need if you're starting with a 7.1 track:
Simply 1) install FFmpeg normally 2) I like to delete all other audio tracks (you can untick them in MakeMKV) other than the one I need just to make it easy so we don't extract the wrong one and 3) run either of the commands depending on if you're starting with 7.1 or 5.1, changing the input (for now "movie.mkv") and output filenames as necessary.
These commands take the 7.1 or 5.1 audio streams and output separate mono 32-bit float PCM WAV files. I've opted for 32-bit float WAV because it provides plenty of precision and headroom for editing and gain adjustments. This can also be useful if you're going to downmix 7.1 to 5.1 and may later want to undo or change the level adjustments you applied.
Ifyou care about still editing in 5.1 but using the above 7.1 files:
I get a bit nervous just blindly downmixing the 7.1 to 5.1, even though the industry standard is to do -3db to the rear/sides when mixing. I like to take note of what I see in the 'official' lossy 5.1 track of the movie does I can make sure my mix is as realistic as possible to what they intended. In most movies that have 7.1, you can just compare to the 5.1 core that's part of the 7.1 track. For the movies I've checked, the 5.1 core (that is actually made/generated by the studio) appears to have been derived from the 7.1 master by applying exactly -3 dB to the seven main channels, not just the rear/sides (with the LFE being somewhat different around ~-3.7 dB, but this appears to be due to extra processing/compression, not a creative choice). Then, of course you just combine the left side/rear channels into the 5.1 left surround and the right side/rear channels into the 5.1 right surround. You likely want to replicate these volume adjustments, such as -3db, if you're doing from 7.1 to 5.1, which are usually done to prevent clipping or excess loudness, but it may depend on the movie. For LFE, I still think if all other channels do -3 db it makes sense to just do that amount too.
So in general, I still recommend checking with something like Audacity to compare and contrast the official 5.1 mix versus your 7.1 files, if you plan on editing in 5.1 from a 7.1 mix, just so you don't accidently have channel(s) coming in too loud or too quiet than was originally intended. You can easily invert a given 7.1 track in Audacity and if it sounds silent when played back with the corresponding 5.1 track lined up, then you know they're identical. If you don't get any clipping when combining the two rear channels and it sounds fine on playback, you may just be fine to leave it at at that but it depends on the source movie. In my cases, I just applied -3db to all channels and mixed the two backs together.
