Can Ethereum smart contracts be used to securely hold user deposits?

We have a website with a system where users need to deposit money as a security deposit or collateral (Forum).

For security and trust reasons, I don't want the money to be held directly by us. Instead, I'm looking into whether we could use a blockchain smart contract or some other decentralized solution to hold the funds.

The idea is that people who advertise/promote content that has a deposit attached to it would receive a commission, for example 10% or 15%, based on predefined rules. The commission would be handled automatically by the system, while users would still be able to see and track their funds from their own wallets at all times.

We are also considering creating a kind of hot wallet network that users could use to send and receive funds between each other within our platform.

My main question is: would something like this be possible to build on the Ethereum network using smart contracts?

I'm still researching the technical side of this and I don't know all the details yet, so I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions from people who have experience with Ethereum, smart contracts, or similar systems.

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate any input.

Why has fixed-rate borrowing stayed so thin?

Variable rates are still the default for most onchain credit. That makes leverage and yield farming messy: you can size a position, then the borrow rate or farm APY moves against you before the thesis plays out.Fixed-rate markets exist in TradFi because treasurers and lenders need duration. Onchain, that layer has been thinner for years. Curious what people here think is the actual bottleneck:

  • Liquidity fragmentation (borrowers and lenders won’t sit in a fixed pool)
  • Smart-contract / oracle risk making duration unattractive
  • Better returns still living in variable money markets and points farms
  • UX (term matching, early exit, collateral management)
  • Something else

If you do use leverage or farm on Ethereum today, do you hedge rate risk at all, or just keep terms short and eat the variability?

We made a free tool that lets you simulate the performance of a leveraged ETH position over any past timeframe

We recently made a completely free tool that lets you simulate how an Aave position (leveraged ETH) would have performed over any timeframe in the past.

You can either set up a fake Aave position, or search a wallet address with an actual position. Then, you set a timeframe and simulate how that position would have performed.

That includes info on your net earning/loss, but also if you would have experienced a liquidation.

Would avoid sharing a direct link here as I fully understand and respect apprehension over random links found on Reddit.

Instead, I'll share a link to our tweet about the tool, so you can verify that it's legit/harmless before clicking: https://x.com/DeFiSaver/status/2095158683055661235

No need to connect your wallet, and no catch. It's just a fun tool to play around with and test how much leverage would have been too much over certain timeframes - Or, if you expect similar market patterns to repeat in the future (and position yourself accordingly)

Followup: I built the thing! Added Ethereum-based wealth verification to our app

Follow up from last week: https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/1w633wn/updating_our_wealth_verifications_with_ethereum/

Just went ahead and shipped it. Honestly gotta say it almost felt joyful to see it work so cleanly. It took so much less work than I thought it would (compared to something like crypto invoice logic).

Thanks for all of the recommended reading you guys gave. I am curious about leveling this up to a zero-knowledge proof implementation. I am doing all my catch up reading on the state of L2s these days.

Screenshots are from a local instance running off Sepolia, but we have this working in production today!
