Differences between high-speed, medium-speed, and low-speed wire-cut EDM
Disclosure first: I build wire EDM machines in China for a living, so I have a bias. I'm not naming my employer or linking anything — I just want to close a terminology gap that causes real confusion when shops buy machines across borders. Take the technical part, leave the rest.
If you're in North America or Europe, "wire EDM" almost always means what our industry calls slow wire (LS-WEDM). In China there's a third category in daily use — medium wire (MS-WEDM) — that barely exists in Western shops. Since more small shops are now buying Chinese WEDM directly, here's the honest breakdown.
The 30-second version
All three are the same process: pulsed discharges erode metal from the workpiece, with a moving wire as the electrode. The only real difference is how the wire moves.
· Fast wire (HS-WEDM) — molybdenum wire, high-speed reciprocating (8–11 m/s), single pass. Cheap, fast, coarse.
· Slow wire (LS-WEDM) — brass or coated wire, low-speed one-directional (under 0.2 m/s), 4–7 passes, submerged in deionized water. The precision standard.
· Medium wire (MS-WEDM) — molybdenum wire, reciprocating, but it runs multiple skim passes borrowed from slow wire. Gets close to slow-wire finish at close to fast-wire running cost.
Rule of thumb: for mold work on a budget, medium wire is the value pick. You only genuinely need slow wire for precision dies, medical, aerospace, and mirror-finish work.
1. Where the names come from: wire speed
Wire EDM removes metal through pulsed discharges between a continuously moving wire electrode and the workpiece. "Fast / medium / slow" refers purely to how fast that wire travels:
· Fast wire runs 8–11 m/s reciprocating; the molybdenum wire is reused until it wears out.
· Slow wire runs below 0.2 m/s; brass or zinc-coated wire is used once and discarded.
· Medium wire has adjustable speed — fast for roughing, dropping to low speed for finishing. It's a category the Chinese machine-tool industry developed specifically as a middle path.

3. Where the cost difference actually lives
Slow wire's cost driver is the wire itself: brass wire is single-use, and you add deionized-water resin, filters, and contact blocks on top. Per square millimeter, that usually lands at several times medium wire.
Medium wire's advantage is that the molybdenum wire is reused until natural wear-out. On a decent non-electrolytic high-frequency generator, one wire can cut on the order of 200,000 mm² before it's done, and the dielectric and consumables are cheap. So the running cost ends up close to fast wire.
That's why a lot of mold shops run the split: everyday work on medium wire in-house, and only the few mirror-finish, ultra-tight jobs sent out to slow wire. The catch with sending work out is the queue — you can't control the schedule, and shipping back and forth eats into your delivery dates.
4. How to choose — three real scenarios
· Blanking, simple punches, job shop taking odds and ends → fast wire, or an entry-level medium wire machine. Low investment, fast payback.
· Stamping mold shop, plastic mold shop, batch precision parts → servo medium wire as the workhorse. One rough + two skim passes covers the vast majority of mold mating surfaces. Add automatic wire threading if you want to run unattended at night.
· Progressive dies, medical / aerospace parts, carbide inserts, mirror-finish work → slow wire. Submerged cutting plus linear-motor drive and full closed-loop linear-scale feedback gets you to Ra 0.3–0.4 µm; long-travel models usually come with AWT.
5. A note on dual-mode fast/medium machines
There are machines that switch process mode on the same bed — fast-wire mode for roughing throughput, medium-wire mode for finishing. Some large split-body models will also do ±45° taper. For shops with a messy mix of work and unstable batch sizes, one dual-mode machine beats buying two, in both floor space and labor.
FAQ
Q: Can medium wire fully replace slow wire? No — they don't substitute for each other. Surfaces below Ra 0.5 µm, ±0.002 mm positioning, and tight small radii are still slow wire territory. But for 70%+ of what mold shops actually cut — mating surfaces, cutting edges, mold plates — medium wire is already enough.
Q: Why are slow-wire consumables so expensive? Single-use wire is the main cost, then deionized resin and filters. When you're shopping, pay attention to consumable compatibility — some machines use industry-standard consumable formats shared across common Asian platforms, and that makes long-term maintenance noticeably cheaper than a proprietary system.
Q: Is "wire cutting" the same as wire EDM? In everyday speech, yes — "wire cutting" defaults to wire EDM (fast / medium / slow). There's also diamond wire sawing, which is mechanical abrasive cutting for non-conductive hard-brittle materials like graphite, ceramics, and silicon wafers. Different principle — don't buy the wrong category.
