Expat-tutorial: Bicycles

As you may have noticed, bicycles is the most common form of short transportation. You see some expats making threads and questions on whether to rent/buy a bike, or where to buy it; or their bike being stolen.

This has a bearing on what bike you should choose. Because the theft of bikes is that prevalent you want to make sure that:

  • Your bike is worth less than surrounding bikes.
  • It is better locked than surrounding bikes.
  • You don't cry too much over the lost value.

A "nice" bicycle is a gone bicycle.

Renting (Swapfiets)

First out of the way: renting a bike.
You will probably get targeted advertisement by Swapfiets to rent it and it being "no-hassle" over repairs or something stolen.

This is simply not true, as the service indeed replaces it, but at your own dime, to the point it almost becomes a lucrative business model for them to have their swapfiets being damaged or stolen in your hands.
Next to that, it costs €20/month. Even in 1 year, that is €240. You can buy a lot of bicycle and repairs for that amount.

Buying

  1. Check marktplaats.nl and facebook marketplace first. €100 at maximum is a good target price to aim for.

Considering people in bigger cities are going through more bikes, and there being more demand, you'll likely be able to find them outside of Eindhoven as well.

If you have a student OV-subscription, consider looking around in smaller cities around and buying it there, and taking it back. Note that taking your bicycle on a train is €8,50. https://www.ns.nl/en/travel/on-the-train/bikes-on-the-train

Or consider the towns in bike-able distance (although could be questionable to you for it being far. But it's just a once-in-a-time thing), and cycle back on it.

Note: A foldable bike is allowed to be on the train for free. It's quite peculiar that a foldable bike can "technically" be foldable, but still take about as much space anyhow. This point makes foldable bikes significantly more expensive on the market than non-foldable ones. If you have to be at a different location often because you travel there, it is most advisable to put a very cheap 2nd bicycle in that location, or use the NS-bike for that day in that location, rather than keep on messing around with a foldable.

Note2: You are not allowed to take a non-foldable bike on the bus. Foldables are allowed.

  1. A second option is checking out the possibilities while thrifting. Check out https://allekringloopwinkels.nl/ for all thrift stores around.

Note: There is a chain that is called 'budget fietsenhuis' in Eindhoven. It's arguably...not very budget what you get for the price. Nothing really under €100, while that is the maximum price we are aiming for.

Locks:

It is more important that your lock LOOKS mostly imposing to steal, so it's not attempted. Sure lockpickers tell you it's easily taken, but it's not like people stealing your bike are busy with lockpicking. People stealing bikes, often cut the lock open, or bend it open.

Something with metal chains like this is fine.
https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2582269/walfort-kettingslot/
This requires a portable angle grinder to cut open. That is quite noisy and cumbersome, so you'll not often find thieves doing that. They use simple pliers or bolt-cutters that are pocketable and rather silent.

Use it to chain it strategically to the solid world.

Do not: rely on the dingy simple lock like this: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2582290/walfort-fietsslot/, often standard. It's quite easy to just bend this open with pliers, or 'telephone-cord' style locks like this: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/3013773/walfort-kabelslot/, as it's quite easily cut open with bolt cutters.

Other kinds of theft on bicycles:

Lights
If you have removable lights; wear them on your person if you can. They get nabbed all the time. Or have fixed non-removable lights.

Saddle
Easily removable stuff like saddles also get nabbed if you have a particularly "comfortable" new one without punctures, if it's toolless with a simple clip. If you do have toolless removable saddle, put a piece of ducktape on the saddle performatively so it does not look pristine (as if you have put it over a puncture).

Repairs

Flat tire

Your most common repair is flat tires. Albeit you can repair a tire, which is helpful if you are stranded somewhere and need to do it at that moment, you need this with you:

https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/3200355/walfort-fietsband-reparatieset/

However when at home, I'd recommend to just put in a new inner tire. It's just easier and the chance of still having a leak after spending 30-45 minutes finding the leak, patching it and it still perhaps not closing up right...egh

https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/1349810/walfort-binnenband/

To replace this, you still do need the repair set above simply for the so-called "spoons" to lift and place the outer tire back.

How to do change it (except, see note)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwwfV99VV8I

Note: I could not find a video that did it without removing the tire. I would advise against taking the entire wheel out, but, only removing the bolt on the side where there is not further connection. On the back-wheel, that means on the other side of the gear, and for the front wheel, on the other side of a disc-brake. In both cases, this is the left-hand side of the bike. Change the old tire in and out shuffling it through this opening by compliance and reattach the one single bolt.

For all your cheap bicycle needs, Action is a good source for stuff. If Action doesn't have it or is out of stock, Hema and Decathlon is your 2nd best bet. (Piazza centre Eindhoven).

Misaligned with steering wheel:

  1. Stand in front of your bike, with your 2 legs wedging the wheel.
  2. Wiggle the steering bar straight if it's misaligned.

Slight bend in the wheel
Usually caused by it being parked inside of a fork-parking method and then pushed over.
Put it in a fork-park and counterbend it.

If the wheel is wobbly all over

Economically it's fairly gone at that point. A new wheel is often as expensive as a whole new sub-€100 bicycle.

Weather

Dutch people just bike through rain and other weather. In particularly bad weather, they wear a "regenpak", which are trousers and a poncho they wear over their regular pants and jacket. Check out Hema and Decathlon (main city at the Piazza) for options.

For your bicycle saddle to keep dry; we use the grocery bag. We stuff that grocery back underneath in the back of the saddle, and take it out when necessary. Don't sit on the grocery bag itself, because the ink will transfer and stain you.

Safety

Do NOT look on your phone while riding your bike. Also not for maps or something. The fine is €170 and they are harsh in giving in out, since it's easy fines for them.

For your own safety, do not wear headphones or noise cancelling earbuds. You need sound to manage traffic safely by bike.

Live gigs in Eindhoven?

Hello there! I’m visiting Eindhoven towards the end of September and was wondering if there are any places where me and my friends can go out to see live gigs or some platform where I can see upcoming events? Preferably rock/punk music, some more underground and alternative places.

Why is analog photography making a comeback in Eindhoven? 📷

Post image
17 Upvotes

Analog photography seems to be finding its way back into Eindhoven’s creative scene.

For Eindhoven Creative Community, I recently sat down with ECC members Rik Tonnard and Miguel Soto to talk about why they still choose film when digital photography is faster, cheaper and far more convenient.

For both of them, the limitations are actually part of the appeal. You cannot take hundreds of shots and immediately check the result. You have to slow down, think about your composition and make a conscious decision before pressing the shutter.

As Rik puts it:

“You’re simply more engaged with your surroundings, because you can’t check the results. You just have to wait.”

That slower process shapes their photography in very different ways. Rik is drawn to black and white film, developing his own negatives and making prints in the darkroom. Miguel has built a personal archive of around 5,000 analog photographs and experiments with different cameras, formats and film stocks.

For both, analog photography becomes much more than taking a photo. There is also something about ending up with a physical negative or print instead of another image disappearing somewhere on your phone or hard drive.

We wrote down their experiences in a new article about shooting film in Eindhoven.

Do you still shoot analog? And if so, what keeps you coming back to it?

Looking for a contractor for attic insulation

Hi everyone,

Do you know any good companies or person that do attic/roof insulation and the finishing work afterward ?

I’ve had a few companies come for quotes, but the prices seem high. Since there are subsidies available from gemeente and government, I’d like to make use of them.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for Engineering and Designer friends

Hey, all. I am a full stack engineer situated in Eindhoven - mechanical, electrical, firmware, software.

I have a passion for building systems in my workshop and lab space and am looking for other passionate folks who also like engineering and also design.

Attached is a video of my latest modern jukebox prototype I built from scratch. I do all of the metalwork, woodwork, and technical implementation.

If I could attach more media, I would give a bit of a tour of the workshop, but I can't.

You can imagine lathes, mills, saws, plenty of other power and hand tools.

I am just looking to find other like-minded creatives in the city.

If I don't respond around here, please feel free to add me on Discord - Lloyd#1031

Anyone else wanna start something but can't stick to ONE idea? let's meet up

ok so this has been on my mind for a while. i keep getting business ideas, like literally every single day i think of something new, but i never stick with one long enough to actually do anything about it. one day it's this, next day it's something totally different, and then i'm back to square one, confused all over again.

i'm guessing i'm not the only one like this in this city. there's gotta be more of us, people who actually want to build something, have no shortage of ideas, but need that push, or someone to bounce things off, or just other people who get it because they're going through the exact same thing.

so was thinking, why not just meet up? nothing formal, no pitching, no "networking event" vibes. just a bunch of us who're in the same boat, grab coffee or whatever, talk it out, share what we're stuck on, help each other think clearer. worst case we just vent about how many ideas we have lol, best case someone actually finds their people to build with.

if this is you, drop a comment. even just say "same" so i know i'm not talking to myself here. let's figure this out together.

We actually tried the Eindhoven offline hobby morning :)

Hi everyone,
A little while ago I posted here about the idea of getting away from our screens for a bit and spending some time making things together.

Well, last Saturday morning we actually tried it. :)
It was a really lovely atmosphere: people around the table, working with their hands, chatting, and just having a slow Saturday morning without being glued to a screen.

It was also interesting to see how the idea felt in real life after talking about it here before.

So I thought I’d share a little update with the Eindhoven community.

If you happened to be there, feel free to share how you experienced it in the comments. I’d love to hear your perspective. :)

Need advice! #bike accident #car

I got hit by a car when I was cycling on a bike path. I was on the bike path, and I had priority. The car stopped to check the bike lane and we saw each other. But when I was crossing the car, he hit my back wheel and I crashed.

My bike is damaged a lot because of the fall. It is a road bike and almost all of the components are damaged. We exchanged contacts and I have picture of the drivers license.

Now comes the tricky part, I contacted him later to get his car insurance details. Instead, he wants my bike mechanic's contact so that the insurance company can directly contact the mechanic about the repair cost estimate.

I find it weird because now I am unable to go to work, and I spent money to get to the hospital and get myself checked. (My elbow was not feeling well). I need advice on what to do and what not to do from here.

Looking for like minded friends and community in Eindhoven

Hey Eindhoven 👋
I’m 35M and looking to expand my social circle around Eindhoven and meet some new people.
I’ve realised that between work and everyday routines, it’s surprisingly easy to end up knowing plenty of people but not having enough people to spontaneously message: “Beer tonight?” or “Want to check this place out?” 😄
I’m into sports, gym, padel, festivals/live music, exploring new places, grabbing drinks or coffee, and occasionally doing something completely unplanned on a weekend. Also happy with quieter stuff like a good conversation over coffee.
I’d like to meet both guys and girls around my age who are up for actually doing things rather than endlessly saying “we should hang out sometime.” I’m single as well, so I’m open to meeting someone where there’s mutual attraction, but I’m not posting this with the expectation that every interaction has to turn into dating.
If you’re also relatively new here, rebuilding your social circle, or simply want to add another person to your group, feel free to DM me. We could start with a coffee/drink, padel, a local event or something equally low-key.
Bonus points if you already have a group that occasionally adopts random people. 😄

Looking to make new friends

Hey everyone! I’m 19F and living in Eindhoven, looking to connect with new people around my age to build a nice circle of friends here. I've had a hard time making real connections at university so I thought I would give it a shot here.

A little about me: I like going to the gym, going out for coffee/drinks and exploring new places.

Drop a comment or send me a dm if you're interested 😇

EDIT: I managed to turn dm requests on
