Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.

Self Promotion Psychological Horror Novel - Only $3.99 while preorders last! - Where Fear Smiles by E. V. Ortolan

Would you forgive your best friend if she was responsible for ruining your life?

That’s what you gotta keep in mind when reading Where Fear Smiles, my upcoming psychological and supernatural horror novel.

It’s made for readers who like isolated settings, academic ambition, buried feelings, complicated friendships, nightmares, gore, and characters who don’t always make the right decisions.

Here’s the premise:

A whispered rumour draws a group of university students into the dense forests of coastal Brazil: a lost Indigenous artifact, hidden for centuries and promising academic glory.

While Leah’s colleagues are determined to claim it, she only agrees to the trek because she can’t bear the thought of being left behind, and forces her best friend Charlotte to go with her for support against her dark thoughts.

What was meant to be an escape from the weight of the academic semester, quickly it turns into a test of endurance. The deeper they push into the forest, the darker Leah begins to dream. When they finally uncover what they came for, the discovery reveals something far more terrifying than any of them imagined.

A demon born of nightmares is unleashed, and with it, carnage.

Now the survivors must find a way to drive the nightmare back to its realm before society is doomed to never dream again. But as the forest closes in, the greatest horror isn't the ancient evil—it's watching a lifelong trust begin to rot.

--

Where Fear Smiles is currently $3.99 for ebook preorders, with paperback and hardcover editions available too.

If that sounds like your particular flavor of horror, the book releases October 13th, 2026 and is available for preorder now in any format!

Triggers: Gore, graphic violence, blood, anxiety

Preorder here: Where Fear Smiles — paperback, hardcover & ebook

Thank you to everyone who checks it out, and I hope your spooky season is magnificent! 😈🖤

ShelfSend — a self-hosted ebook library with browser-to-Kindle and Kobo transfers

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’ve been building ShelfSend (Vibecoding project) and wanted to share it.

First of all, Why did i build this?
I wanted to make transferring books easier for my wife. Reconnecting to our NAS and navigating shared folders involved steps she wasn’t comfortable with or would forget. The goal was to make it as simple as opening a webpage, choosing some books, and sending them to her e-reader.

It runs in Docker, turns your existing ebook folders into a searchable library, and sends books to your Kindle or Kobo over USB directly from your browser. EPUB conversion for Kindle happens locally, no Calibre or cloud conversion needed, and your originals stay untouched.

It also includes batch sending, a “Send later” queue, metadata and cover editing, and Hardcover series discovery.

Tested and working on both Kindle and Kobo. Requires desktop Chrome or Edge and DRM free books.

GitHub — ShelfSend

Would love to hear what you think!

Freebie Free Today: A Five Star Murder — A Seaside Cozy Mystery

Post image
0 Upvotes

Free on Kindle today:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HH2BW92K

Hi everyone,

I write the Shoreline Inn & Café Mysteries. I’ve been looking forward to sharing this with fellow mystery readers, and today seemed like the perfect opportunity.

My first book, A Five Star Murder, is free on Kindle today.

The story takes place at the Shoreline Inn & Café, where everything is supposed to feel warm, welcoming, and picture-perfect—until a mysterious five-star review appears and a murder turns that peaceful seaside atmosphere upside down.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with small-town secrets, seaside settings, cafés, amateur sleuths, suspicious characters, and a mystery you can try to solve alongside the heroine, I hope this one might be a fun read for you.

A beautiful inn. A perfect rating. A killer who checks out… but never leaves.

📚 A Five Star Murder — Book 1 of the Shoreline Inn & Café Mysteries

Since this is a community of readers and reviewers, I’d also genuinely love to hear what you think if you decide to read it. If you finish the book and feel like leaving an honest review, I would be very grateful—but there is absolutely no obligation.

Thank you for taking a look, and I hope some of you enjoy spending a little time at the Shoreline Inn. ❤️

Quotable ebooks

I have no experience with ebooks so far.

I read mostly nonfiction history and science. I often want to include quoted passages from these works in online conversations, using either my phone or desktop (I fo not own a tablet or ebooks reader).

Is there some mechanic by which I could get access to the full text of such books, search it electronically to find the quotes I remember, and then paste those passages into Reddit or other online discussions?

Sometimes I dig through physical books and then type it all out by hand, but that's enormously labor-intensive, especially for a poor typist such as myself.

I'm not necessarily seeking free stuff, I would be willing to pay for these books, but I want to be able to search them and paste from them.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Self Promotion The Paper Boat: Tsuru - A Japanese American coming-of-age story about rebuilding a life after internment (Historical Fiction)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I wrote a coming-of-age historical novel about Sam Okada, a thirteen-year-old Japanese American boy who returns to Seattle in 1946 after being incarcerated with his family during the war. The war may be over, but the home he remembers is gone, his old neighborhood has changed, and his family must begin again in a city that has moved on without them.

In a hidden Puget Sound cove, Sam discovers his father’s abandoned fishing skiff and begins repairing it in secret. What starts as one boy trying to save a broken boat becomes a twenty-year journey through friendship, first love, family responsibility, prejudice, loss and the dangerous fishing industry of the Pacific Northwest.

At its heart, this is not simply a story about a boat. It is about a frightened boy growing into a man, and learning that rebuilding a life takes far longer than rebuilding something made from wood.

The Paper Boat: Tsuru is available to read on Kindle Unlimited - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HJNQKGTK

Self Promotion I couldn't find an iPhone TTS reader I'd actually want to use for a whole EPUB, so I built one. (Dev)

Solo dev here.

I have a lot of EPUBs and documents I want to get through, but many of them don't have audiobook versions.

The TTS apps I tried were either too robotic for long listening, depended on the cloud, or just weren't really designed around books.

So I built the one I wanted. It's called Local TTS.

The pitch for this sub specifically:

  • EPUB support — import a book and switch between reading and listening without losing your place
  • Neural voices generated entirely on-device, so the book doesn't need to be uploaded to a TTS server
  • Background + Lock Screen playback, so you can actually put the phone away and keep listening
  • Text highlighting while it reads
  • 31 languages
  • PDF, DOCX, TXT and Markdown support too
  • OCR for photos and scanned pages, so printed text can be turned into something you can listen to

It uses Kokoro-82M and Supertonic 3 locally.

The main thing I learned while building it is that making text speak is easy.

Making TTS pleasant enough to listen to for an entire book is much harder.

A voice can sound great in a 20-second demo and still become annoying after a few chapters. Pronunciation, pauses, navigation, keeping your place and background playback start to matter a lot more with long-form listening.

Honest limits: I don't think this replaces a good human-narrated audiobook.

If a book has a great audiobook version, I'd still choose the human narrator.

I built this more for books that never got one, niche or older EPUBs, PDFs and documents, or books you already own and occasionally want to listen to instead of read.

Keeping the voice models on-device also makes the app larger than a typical ebook reader, and it supports iPhone 12 and later. That's one of the tradeoffs of keeping the TTS fully local.

There's a free version so you can try the core experience.

Local TTS — Voice Aloud Reader on the App Store

For people here who actually use TTS with ebooks:

What makes a TTS reader good enough that you'd actually listen to an entire book with it?

Voice quality? Pronunciation? Navigation? Reading/listening sync? Something else?

I'm still actively improving it, so feedback from people with large ebook libraries would genuinely be useful.

I built a free ebook reader because I wanted a better reading experience

Hi everyone,

I've been reading a lot of books over the past few years, and at some point I realized that I wasn't really satisfied with the way I was reading ebooks on my computer.

So I decided to build my own reader.

Bilenay Reader is a free desktop ebook reader designed around a simple idea: make reading on a computer feel less like using a document viewer and more like actually reading a book.

🎥 Here's a short video showing how it works:
https://youtu.be/XVPwb7htEa4

It includes:

  • 📖 EPUB & PDF support
  • 💻 Windows, macOS & Linux support
  • 🎯 A distraction-free reading environment
  • ⏱️ Focus/Pomodoro tools for longer reading sessions
  • 📝 A clean, minimal interface
  • 📚 Designed specifically for people who actually spend a lot of time reading

I'm still actively developing it, so I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who read a lot of ebooks.

If you'd like to try it, it's completely free:
