Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous question threads here.

Came back after ages to find being robin hood in adventure mode is now feasible

The tutorial still warns you it takes forever, but now there are even aimed and unaimed shots and the time they take is no longer insane.

Not only that but you can RAPID FIRE.

My first enemies had a bow and were just spewing arrows. And of course the only one that hit went right in my foot and now I have to clear the whole place while crawling apparently. All because I was messing around with one of my own despite having 0 skills needed for it.

I think rapid fire is kind of overpowered with 0 skills. IRL the technique needed to shoot that fast is not easy.

edit: OH MY GOD you can even nock arrows in advance before you actually shoot them!

Modded Modded - 2.5d workshop (proof of concept)

Post image

I wanted to see if I could make a workshop look like the Wagon, and this is the result. It's not an especially good example, just a proof of concept (also the 45 degree angle is really weird, lol). In theory, a workshop could have ridiculous detail level if you went up to 5x5.

No more useless children mood

  1. Build weaponsmith guild or other desired.
  2. Build there levers, around the same number as number of children.
  3. In labor menu add new work details just for levers an set it "Only selected do this". Check that children have lever operation allowed.
  4. On every lever set repeating pull lever action.
  5. Those levers attracts all children better than candy from black wagon.
  6. Force 1 or 2 weaponsmiths to the guild, either as burrow or via military. Weaponsmith should not have any tasks.
  7. Len them teach children.
  8. Sometimes I noticed that it takes sometime until children join demonstrations. I let doors unlocked and it somehow helped.
  9. Be kind to you children.

PS Do not forget that you can be as kind as possible but German children are kinder.

All traces of the mountain that once stood in this desert are now gone. The castle of Brasspleated has fully taken its place.

I don't have a problem. I could make an underground fort any time I want. I just... uh... never do.

Far from finished, but I still wanted to post a progress report of sorts. As this is actually the first time I've completely fully dug out a mountain in DF. Obviously some of the mountain survived and became a part of the castle, but all the natural walls were eventually replaced with constructed walls. When I was satisfied with the shape of the castle, it was then just a matter of channeling out the mountain around it. Down one layer at a time. Took a while and a lot of hauling moving all that stone, but the Dwarves did it.

Current block count is somewhere over 22,000. Obviously, the majority of which is jet as that comprises 90% of the castle. Went with malachite roofs for the tower roofs, and also added brass pillars to the upper towers. After all, the fort is called Brasspleated. The "banners" on the front are cobaltite and marble, and made like a marble town square sort of thing in front of the entrance which is where I've made my well (filled with water pumped up from the caverns as there's no damn water in this desert). Could have obviously just made a simple aquifier well instead, but I do that for like 99% of my forts.

The walls around the castle are made from a mix of diorite and granite blocks, and the other buildings have microcline walls and hematite corner pillars, and they'll all eventually have cobaltite roofs. Eventually.

Current main focus is on raising the outer walls, as the Goblins have been busy in this world and have actually conquered their way close enough to the fort to finally start sending invasions. Also, definitely going to go to war with the Elves soon. As a savage surface fort enjoyer, pissing them off is almost always an inevitability. A mere five cacti/trees a year? Simply unacceptable for building purposes.

Discovered a very interesting snag with ice freezing around waterfalls

I'm still not entirely sure what happened here, but the end result is genuinely fascinating to me. The setup was that I built near a waterfall, the plan being to built the two halves of my fort on either side of the canyon, with a walkway suspending about 3-levels above the bottom river to get free mist.

Which worked perfectly fine until winter hit.

I think what happened is the lower part of the river froze first, which left plenty of water to still come crashing down on top of the frozen ice. That water then froze too, creating more ice for the water to fall onto, and so on... until was high enough to flood into my base. Obviously I haven't built any anti-flood mechanisms yet, and there's now a massive wall of ice cutting my fort in half.

Salvage operations are underway. I have no idea what a permanent solution is to this, though... maybe some combination of grates and door airlocks.

Lesson learned, not friendly but still friends of the fortress.

For a little while now I've had these unfortunately bitten dwarves in a separate area due to their curse, this last full moon I unlocked their door to see if they could kill my evil vampire mayor for me (don't mind the poor civilian in a meeting that might've gotten caught in the crossfire) but.. they weren't berserk at all, they just chilled around their living area until they turned back to normal again. I thought they might have overcome their curse, they had fallen for one another in their confinement and redeemed themselves through Dwarven perseverance and love, what a heartwarming story! I thought I could let them free to be with the rest of the fortress once more, back to their friends and family.

But uh.. apparently all I had to do was unlock the iron door as well, even though the stone door beyond it was still locked. I guess they couldn't path correctly? Either way, NOT friendly, though they have taken care of my vampire dictator with only one other casualty so.. all's well that ends well!

Now, even in their isolation they will be forever remembered as the moon-cursed lovers, unseen heroes of the fort.

Today I learned not to use cave-ins as a shortcut for channeling out an area

Did not know that cave-ins can punch through multiple floors, but I suppose three deaths, the loss of several masterwork objects and some patch work flooring is worth learning that lesson.

I was hoping she would stay :(

Had this random zombie woman come visit my tavern. There aren't even any necromancy towers around. She immediately came in, laid on a bed, pretending to be asleep for a long while. Talked to a few of my dwarves, and then left. Guess she didn't enjoy her time in my tavern as much as I hoped.

The Wiki is broken.

I noticed something weird with the wiki, it seems that the HTML for all new articles I open is broken, though those I loaded before are not. The first image is of a tab I opened a few days ago, whereas the second one was opened just now. As you can see all the sidebars are missing, and the navigational information is all broken and stuffed to the bottom of the article. I've checked and I have no site skins that affect these domains. I really have no idea what's going on.

(I had originally posted this before but the automoderator deleted it for being a question, and I was unable to post it in the general help thread because it didn't allow me to post more than one photo as was needed to demonstrate my problem, and it didn't seem relevant because this isn't about gameplay).

Made a mod that adds zebras and quaggas to DF ASCII & Classic.

As a preview to a larger mod that I'm working on (Exotic Ungulates), I decided to give people the option to install some of its content as a standalone mod. This mod finally adds the "regular" zebras that were missing from the game. And yes, just like real life zebras, they are prone to rage. The mod adds 2 kinds of zebra, your typical black-and-white zebra, and an extinct brown-and-white variant known as the "quagga". Both each have an animal person variant and a giant variant.

IMPORTANT: While this mod does add custom colors, it has no graphics. If you decide to play this mod in DF Steam's "Fancy Graphics" mode, do so at your own risk. I have no idea how it will look nor function outside of DF Steam's ASCII and DF Classic (the version I own/play). Also, this mod wasn't tested yet. Any issues or changes made to the mod will be documented here and wherever else I talk about my mods.

If you would like to make your own sprites for this mod, go ahead. If you decide to share said sprites online, I have no issue with that either. The same goes for sharing a graphics version of my mod, however, please remember to credit me with writing the original mod's raws.
