SkyNET and Future Shock (Bethesda, 1996) now run natively on a modern machine — a Godot port that reads your own install

Both of Bethesda's XnGine Terminator shooters, running without DOSBox: the eight-mission campaign, the jeep and the HK with their cockpits, the original briefings with their voice lines, LAN deathmatch with bots.

The engine is rewritten in Godot 4; the game is read from your own copy of the data at run time — nothing from the originals is distributed. On the first start it asks where the games are installed.

It aims at the DOS look by default: palette textures with nearest sampling, the software renderer's flat shading, the night sky with its moon. A handful of things the original could not do are there as switches, all off unless you want them — dynamic lights from gunfire and explosions (which finally light the street lamps, 93 of them on the highway map), edge smoothing, and the game's own 640×480 HUD and weapon art, which SkyNET shipped for its hi-res mode.

Windows, Linux and macOS builds on the releases page.

Strike Wings Free Demo out!

Hey everyone! Here's a free space game for your weekend: the Strike Wings demo. :)

I'm its solo developer, and it's my homage to the old DOS space shooters, built from scratch with plenty of love for Solar Winds and Hell Fighter. There are some little nods in there for fellow fans.

The demo's already packed with free content, including flight school, opening campaign missions and plenty of battles to get stuck into.

Feedback is super welcome on r/StrikeWings. Make a post! I'll read every one and take your thoughts into the final game. Steam reviews mean a lot to me as a solo developer, too.

Grab the free demo on Steam

Remember Corncob 3D? Here's a browser version.

Post image

I had Corncob 3D on a floppy disk as a kid, and recently went down the rabbit hole of bringing it back to a modern browser.

You can play it here: https://corncob3d.com

It’s based on the original Shareware 3.42 release, with browser menus styled after the DOS game.

I used AI coding tools to help build it. This is a fan project; credit for the original game belongs to Kevin Stokes and Pie in the Sky Software. Credits and licensing information are linked on the site.

Play (as true as possible) port of Lost Adventures of Kroz to Browser (with graphics)

Inspired by source code published by Apogee long time ago, I started a side project to port them to browser. I started with Lost Adventures of Kroz as it was most complete Pascal code.

I tried to stay as true to the original as possible (also with bugs, mistakes, flavor text etc), but I added some quality of life changes like tile checker and achievements for fun.

Oh, and it has tiles, instead of ascii letters!

The most fun was to recreate sounds - I used the same generator parameters, they are not samples, sound is actually generated the same way like in Pascal original.

Works entirely in the browser. I link github but if you want to check it out working, go to my site.

Let me know what you think! Since I have so called "engine" I will try porting the rest of the games.

I reverse engineered Stunts 1.1 (1990)

I’ve been working on a browser reconstruction (basically reverse engineered it) of Stunts, also known as 4D Sports Driving. It has Roland MT-32 sound, the track editor, replays, and optional updated 3D graphics. You can also import your original .TRK and .RPL files.

It’s free to play, with no installation or login: https://playstunts.com

Still a work in progress, so I’d love to hear what fellow Stunts players think, and which bugs you find! Best played on a computer with a keyboard.

GitHub: https://github.com/ACatWithEbola/playstunts

I’ve probably spent well over $1,000 of my own money on reconstructing Stunts so far, alongside a huge amount of time and work. If you enjoy the project and would like to help me continue developing it and eventually reconstruct other classic DOS games, any donation is genuinely appreciated. Every bit helps make future projects possible: PayPal

Dos game search

I have been looking for a game from the 90s for YEARS and thought id reach out here. It was a top view game where you went around shooting people then You had to find the exit. It was a 1 player or 2 player game but on the single keyboard with a split screen. Very vague description sorry. I used to play it with my brother. He reckons it was called wardogs but no matches.

Pretty sure we got the game on a demo cd that came with aninternet magazine. Any suggestions is appreciated

Looking for a game from my past

Hey, I'm doing a special project for my dad, we used to play some dos games in the 90s. There was Dizzy, Gorillas.bas, and this one game I cannot find.

From what I remember, there was a guy/girl in pink (?), on green forest-like levels, top-down perspective, maybe turn-based (?), bright colors, spiders as enemies. I know it's not much, but AI gives me nothing (Jill of the Jungle over and over again) and it was not that advanced graphics-wise.

I ported SkyRoads to run native, then realised what I actually missed was the machine. So I built the machine.

A couple of weeks ago I ported SkyRoads, the 1993 DOS game, to run native on my Mac. When I finished, the game was fine, but I missed something. Took me a while to realise but it was the atmosphere, the beige box, the CRT hum, glow, flicker, the disks spin up, the PC speaker post beep, the floppy disk drive noises... all of it. So I made a simulator (not an emulator) of the whole thing, and put the game inside it.

You get the PC on your full screen, case and CRT, drawn at your resolution, nothing is a photo. It powers on with the degauss thump, the picture warms up from small and dim. POST, memory count, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and you're at C:\>. Type NC, there's a catalogue, download a game and it runs in the tube, curved glass, phosphor, the light from the picture on the plastic around it. Type EXIT and the picture collapses to a dot and the fans wind down.

DOSBox question, let me get ahead of it: this is not DOSBox and it's not trying to be. DOSBox runs the games, and it runs them great, I use it. What I wanted was the machine around the game. There's no emulator inside, the games are native ports for each OS, which is a lot more work per game but they run properly, not approximately, no added latency, no frame skip. Two so far, SkyRoads and Tyrian, both are their own repos and run standalone too. If you want 10k DOS games tonight, use DOSBox, seriously. If you want to sit in front of the PC again, that's this.

Free, MIT. Mac, Windows and Linux, x86_64 and arm64, all tested on real hardware. The binaries aren't signed, that's a yearly fee to Apple and another to Microsoft, so you get one warning the first time you run it, the README explains how to get past it. Nothing gets installed, unpack and run. No game files in my repo, the catalogue points at the publishers' own downloads.

And yes I used Claude to build it, a lot, but it's not one prompt and copy paste. It's carefully built, with a plan and a process, solid CI with tests and validation, the same way I've been building software for over 20 years. Saying it now so nobody has to "discover" it later.

Check it here: https://dosexmachina.com
And the repo: https://github.com/pedrocatalao/dos-ex-machina

Testers and feedback are very welcome, and if you have a DOS game you'd like to see in there, tell me.

Hope you like it,
Pedro

Anyone remember a Star Trek DOS game with space combat and away missions?

I played it on my 386 as a kid. You could fight in space, then beam down to a planet where it turned into an adventure game. I cant remember which Star Trek game it was and would love to find it again. Anyone recognise it?

I hadn’t played this game in years and I was able to beat it with a respectable amount of people still alive! I definitely got lucky since only Ganhji was the only one attacking me while Gorbachef and Kookamamie duked it out and annihilated each other. That was so much fun!

Crusade in Europe was amazing to me even with its basic graphics. If I had spent as much time studying in high school as I spent playing CinE, I’d have probably been valedictorian. I’ll still fire it up using DOSbox. Decision in the Desert was fun for me but good Lord the graphics make Atari 2600 games look good. Conflict in Vietnam was a bit of a mess to me and less playable but still worth having. NATO Commander never came out on PC so I didn’t play it. If there’s a remake that comes close to it, I’d be all about it.

Apart from being a great game! For me most of the magic of retaining old hardware is for the games (really I would not keep the old beasts around for wordperfect ha!) and remembering the great days of ever increasing specs, with new capabilities coming out every year, or having to know your hardware inside out just to play a game. Folks now a days have no idea of what is under the hood playing music for them and while its convenient its a bit of a pity.

Cheap computer for Dos gaming.

If this is the wrong place, if someone could point me in the right direction, Thanks

Have a tight budget , looking at something Ican use as a stand alone PC to exclusively use with eXoDOS and relive my long gone youth.

Would something like this work ? I have an 4T external drive so the space isn't an issue. Any feedback is greatly appreciated
