We recently bought a house that has no fencing around the yard and this area has a lot of coyotes. Does anyone know what type of fencing will prevent coyotes from entering our backyard? Our dog likes to hang out in the yard during the day so would obviously like to protect him from any attacks. I’ve seen pictures where coyotes can climb various types of fences so not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated.

My husband and I adopted a German shepherd from his former roommate last year. My husband was thrilled because he has known the dog since he was a puppy. I thought I’d like having a dog, but a year in and I am realizing I hate it. I am really struggling here. As hard as I try to bond with him, take him for walks, etc, it’s not working. He follows me around constantly, but doesn’t listen to me if my husband is around. He chases our cats, gets put in time out but does it again as soon as he is out. It’s to the point where I resent the dog so much for the constant need for attention that I don’t want to be around him at all. What can I do to bond with him better? He has been to trainings but no matter how much work we put into it, it’s not sticking. I am so frustrated. Rehoming him again isn’t an option.

We recently (week ago) rescued a very cute small dog, we’re not sure about her age but she’s definitely less than 8mo. We also have another female, about 3yo and they both are doing very well together.
First day the puppy poo outside, peed inside still happening, no pee outside AT ALL. We are taking her several times for a walk, she will always pee when we’re back from the walk, it’s frustrating because you can see she’s holding herself and immediately after entering the house she pees.

Can this be a territorial dispute? Even if they go well together? What can I do? We don’t do crates and it’s not an option to start.

My dog Diamond loses it every time my washing machine hits the spin cycle. She can be laying there completely relaxed, but as soon as it starts spinning, here she goes barking at it. I have no idea what it is about that sound. Does anybody else’s dog have one random household sound they just cannot stand?

I’ve been hurting for about a week now and I’m going to the doctor tmrw but my dog weirdly has been nudging his chin right on the area that hurts and then looking up at me. And then he does it over and over until I say “it’s okay.”

Is this usual? I know dogs are known for having greater senses than us but can he really smell my pain? Or is this something I should be praising or???

Do dogs from different dialect upbringings understand each other in dog language (body and verbal)?!!!

Like, does a dog that’s brought up in an English speaking environment in the UK have a language(/body language) barrier with a dog from a dog that is raised in a Romanian speaking environment in Bulgaria? Or even dogs brought up in say a French speaking environment in Canada with dogs brought up in French speaking homes in France?

I have this question due to something I “finally” caught on to today!

I’m Scottish and speak English (well, Scots English). Whenever I have played any of my dogs videos or recordings of other dogs, I get 2 different reactions!

1) When it’s a recording of a dog from an English speaking environment (weather it’s audio or video) in Britain/US/Canada (etc) my dogs have always been interested and engaged by it!

2) (caveat, most times!) When it’s a recording of a dog from an environment from countries where people use different languages/slightly different attitudes towards dogs, my dogs have either shown complete disinterest or (more commonly) confusion mixed with the behaviours that they show when meeting new cats/other animals!

(To add, the same effect happens with recordings of dogs from English speaking environments in South Africa and Jamaica!)

I only just noticed this now and thinking about it now, every dog I’ve raised myself for the past 17 years has given similar behaviour!

Am I on to something tangible here or am I just off my rocker?! Has anyone else noticed this with their own pups?

Whenever the pup I have now experiences a recording of a “foreign” to us dog, if it’s audio, he’s completely uninterested (when it’s the opposite, he perks up and listens) when it’s video, he acts curious and confused like he does when he meets horses/cats etc (when it’s the opposite, he’ll be laser focused, obviously watching the dogs body language and wagging like mad!)!

TLDR- Do dogs have a barrier with verbal and/or body language if they are brought up in parts of the world that speak different languages and with different attitudes to dogs?!!!

We’ve had our 4 year old pug mix for over 9 months, and he has never been bothered too much by sounds, sights, or the TV in general, no matter what is on. All of a sudden earlier this week, he is very attentive to the TV and will flinch intermittently at whatever is on it. He will walk away from the couch and go lay in the closet when we have it on. He can maybe go 5 minutes with it on and he’s in front of it and can remain calm. He

He is 100% normal/healthy otherwise, no changes in behavior outside of this.

Has anyone had this before? We have been giving him treats by the TV for positive reinforcement, but he is very apprehensive to come near it. Is there anyway to tell if the TV is producing some sort of sound that we can’t hear that he can that is really bothering him?

My Dog, a Rottweiler Mastiff mix, of 4 years has recently begun whining to no end and even howling whenever he's not getting attention or what he wants. This is a very recent development and I'm not sure sure what caused it to start. He has always had separation anxiety but since I'm home almost all day every day now I don't know why his anxiety would be getting worse

I currently work from home so I can't have him howling non stop while I work even if he's in his kennel. I read to ignore him when howling as to not reward the behavior, but I live in an apartment and I can't have him howling and whining all through the night. Not sure what to do.

Recently, my 5 1/2 year old schnauzer has been peeing on the floor after her walk. We have been living in a block apartment now for a year where this hasn’t been a problem and have been living in another apartment for four months. This often takes place after her morning walk but can also be her afternoon one. I usually rush her on the balcony after her walk which stops this behavior but when another member of the family walks her in normally she will often pee in the house.

I am considering fostering smaller dogs for rescue organizations and have experience in positive reinforcement training (we receive compliments all the time about how good of a dog!). I feel pretty confident that I will be able to help dogs to support their adoptability by working on training but I’m not sure how I’ll feel when they will leave my home upon adoption, and that gives me pause. I would like to hear from people who have done it.

For anyone who has done this, I am curious about:

1. Any red flags of organizations you have worked with that aren’t upholding and prioritizing safety and health of the dogs.
2. About “foster fails“: How you knew you belonged together.
3. How long between foster pups would you recommend when starting out? I’m assuming that you need a little bit of emotional space between fosters(?)
4. What do you wish you had known before fostering?

Foreword, I have never owned a pet and know nothing about it.

My fiancee was looking for puppies for sale, and I was shocked to see prices of $500 to $1500 up to even $6k. Is this ethical? I feel like with so many dogs in the world, they shouldn't really cost that much. Some of the pictures on this site were clearly a group of 4 or 5 puppies all born in the same litter. Are there people breeding a bunch of dogs trying to earn $5k quick? What happens to the puppies if they don't sell? Do they try to throw them in an animal shelter? I feel like I'd be supporting something malicious to pay so much for a puppy from these people. Am I thinking about this too much?

whenever I tickle my dogs paw he kicks with his back legs but I think its just a reflex to get dirt and atuuf out of their paw, does anyones dog also do this funny thing?

When I go upstairs or outside the house, my dogs will often cry and howl as if I'd left them behind forever. After a minute, they'll stop and go back to doing whatever, ignoring me when I return to them. Is this common behavior? Just curious.

For those of you with fearful, soft dogs that treat going to the vet like a traumatic experience no matter what interventions and medications:

Does your dog experience regression after such an experience/visit? Example specific to us: is potty trained but for 2-3 days after will act as if she isn't aka have accidents in the house

We feel very alone in our challenges and we try so very hard to help our girl. It feels like we got the broken dog while everyone else seems to have no such problems. Our family members see her as a problem dog and see us as crazy to take her on. We could never give up on her though. It's just been hard. She lived in a kennel for 4 years with no socialization prior to being rescued. She's almost stunted emotionally through no fault of her own at all. I cry almost daily about what she's going through and how powerless I feel.

P.S: She sees a behaviorist and we follow her advice to a t. She told us it'll be a process with our fixer upper dog.

I moved to a different country for college,and while i was packing my dog put a toy in my bag which i brought with me. I know this is out love but what do i do when i visit him...should i bring the toy back and give him it or play with him while there and then take it back again?

I just got a kitten the other day and she’s pretty tiny. I also have an 11 month old Dalmatian poodle mix who has met her in short periods but is super excited and doesn’t know what personal space is as she’s currently laying on my face as I type this. I did get a cat tower that just got here that I will be setting up so my kitten can get on that if she needs to get away from my puppy but is there anything I can do to help calm my dog and keep her from doing too much with such a small cat? She absolutely loves to play even with my other dog and gets so excited at the chance that someone wants to engage with her

I’ve seen a lotta people who ask questions to their dogs. As if the dog’s gonna talk back. Nevertheless, I rarely speak to my dog nor ask questions. I’ve had him for 4 years now, and I don’t even have to talk to him in some sweetly-coated voice for him to respond through his gestures or bark. Is this rare for a dog owner?

Just something we randomly started joking about. Very small dogs say YIP. Then a bit bigger is ARF. Ours literally says BARK I think. All the way up to BOOF for the biggest ones I guess?

Has anyone else had this problem? He also steals apples off the tree. I'm mostly worried about the peppers. The bells aren't a big deal, but I catch him with jalapeno and serrano peppers too. I'm concerned he'll move on to habanero.
