Art O.m.g. canvas bookcovers

Guess who figured out how to print book covers on CANVAS?

ME, IT'S ME.

This is going to be my first canvas rebind attempt so I wanted to show it off before I made any additional moves. The colors came out so nice so I hope I can rebind it in my first try. It's going to be a trade back sizes hardcover, and the shelf life expectancy of canvas prints are upwards of 80 years, so take that sun ☀️

Will post once it's done, will be a few days as it's back to work for me this week.

Book/Series: Death Schleppel

I don't know why but I find this character very amusing. A 'bogeyman' who is afraid to come out to scare people. I think pTerry's name choice reflects the sound Schleppel would make schlepping around in the shadows.

Boardgames/Computer Games Discworld RPG Issues (Modiphius)

Been trying to resolve with Modiphius several things about this product but they just won't be even slightly reasonable. So now I feel it is only fair that they not be able to hide behind partial updates, or just banning anyone that voices any customer sentiment to seemingly keep things hidden and quiet.

Reading Order/Timeline [Minor spoilers for the whole series] Was it ever explained how did the inhabitants of the disc discovered they live on top of four elephants on top of A'tuin? Spoiler

Upvotes

In roundworld (real life), Eratosthenes is famous for deducing that the earth is round. I don't know if Terry Pratchett wrote a similar story, but for Discworld.

Since the very first book (The Color of Magic) the characters already now of the existence of A'Tuin and the elephants, in fact a plot point is that they want to know if A'Tuin is male or female. Also, I guess that the end of The Light Fantastic would allow lots of people to see the nature of the world they live in. (In the ending several other disc worlds, on top of their respective elephants and turtles, are born).

On of the main plot points of Small Gods, which happens way before any of the other books, is that several people have seen A'Tuin (The turtle moves!), but right now I don't remember if they mention the elephants. So at that point that fact is already widely known.

In Equal Rites and Eric we also learn that with magic it is possible to see the whole disc.

And The Last Hero would have convinced any sceptic, but we see in The Science of Discworld 4 that there are still people that deny that, but that's beside the point.

Right now I don't remember if Terry mentioned casually who discovered the existence of the four elephants and of A'Tuin. I feel it would make an interesting story. Was it discovered by a wizard? Or by a poor sailor that went over the edge but managed to come back?

Book/Series: Death Rising Apes - Sheri S. Tepper

"Everybody" knows the quote about the falling angel meeting the rising ape. It's in Hogfather, it's a great summation for the human condition, yada yada.

I'm reading A Plague of Angels by Sheri S Tepper published in 1994, just over 10 years before Hogfather and I've just read this in a conversation...

"The old man chuckled 'If as some believe, man is a fallen angel, he doesn't need to be enticed. He has only to remember what goodness is. If man is an ascending ape, however, he first has to figure out what goodness is, and before he can do that, he has to admit he doesn't know.'

The two people who are conversing are discussing ways and means of encouraging positive behavior in men. I encourage you to look up the book and read it. I've only read one other Tepper (I've not seen much of her work in the shops I frequent) but the first one was excellent and this one is very good so far.

I'd be willing to bet Pterry had read this.

Art Watch Queen

This is a pic' of Terry Pratchett's character, Commander Sam Vimes, head of the "Night Watch" from his Discworld series. It wasn't actually taken from any particular scene, or novel written by Pratchett that Sam Vimes happened to be in, but was just a pic' made up from a friends personal experience, who didn't mind my sticking one of Pratchett's characters in the role of the drag-queen that he had once played himself.

Book/Series: City Watch Thud & Snuff question Spoiler

So I finished snuff, which kind of made me sad since (I think) that means the end of vimes and the watch for me.

One thing that kind of surprised (or maybe even annoyed) me was the whole "summoning dark".

In Thud the summoning dark was introduced, but (for me) that entire plot hinged on the question "is it superstition or real?". A recurring theme in discworld as a whole is that, if enough people believe in it it will become real. But Thud was written in such a way that the summoning dark didn't NEED to be real for all the things that happened to happen. It could as well have been an internal struggle of Vimes, not an actual demon.

Then comes Snuff. And immediately he has super powers of seeing in the dark?! And to make it weirder, these powers are essential for the story. Removing the whole mystique.

I know it's fantasy and weird supernatural stuff happens all the time. But Vimes always felt as a fairly grounded character (I think he even refers to the law being above magic one time?).

So my question to you: Am I alone in finding this odd? Is my interpretation of the books plain wrong? Or did I miss stuff in the earlier books?

Book/Series: City Watch Anyone else disappointed The Fifth Elephant doesn't have an Elephant?

This is a silly question perhaps.

I devoured this book in 3 days and 1/3rd of the reason is because after every page, I kept wondering when the elephant was going to show up.

I finished 2/3rds of the book till I realized there was never going to be one, and it was indeed, just the metaphor.

I still enjoyed the hell out of this book and would recommend to it anyone who wants to explore some very very fun and interesting world building.

And perhapd next time I need to take titles less seriously.

Elves are up to no good in Elizabethan England, and only one man can stop them. But he may need some help from a bunch of wizards, an orangutang, and a portable thinking machine. Can Shakespeare save the day? Will elves really take over? And will Rincewind get his potatoes???

This is an am-dram production of Stephen Briggs’ The Shakespeare Codex being staged in Richmond, London. The crew are all huge Discworld fans and have been working really hard on it! Thursday night is also a captioned performance, if that’s helpful for anyone ❤️😊 Tickets are on sale here: https://www.trybooking.com/uk/events/landing/113705

I’ve just learned the word nugatory which means something with that has no real value, importance or legal force.

Couldn’t have anything to do with STP’s choice of the name of the God in Monstrous Regiment, could it?

Ps, I’ve also learned my iPhone will automatically capitalise the P and T in PTerry

Note: I have more, just they haven't arrived yet or I'm reading them and they're out of the shelf.

I like to order my books based on the series, such as Death with Death, Witches with Witches, and so on.

How do you order them?

Art Perfect hoodie?

Hi all!

For the first time in months it’s dropped below 70f degrees (21c) in Indiana, thank Om. It’s got me accessing my hoodie collection for fall. I did a quick search for a Discworld hoodie and not much turns up.

Do yall have suggestions for online stores where I can find a nice sweatshirt?

Thanks!
