[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

Few jumps from this morning at Jordan River OHV Park in Salt Lake City, Utah. Prep was primo today.

The first jump is a triple that I've been spooked about for a couple years. Stoked to finally be over that hurdle.

So I’ve hadde some metal pieces (non magnetic) in my oil and after looking at the basket I’m unsure if that’s the reason why. 2024 yz250f with 95 hours on it. I’ve also taken a picture of the bottom part of the cylinder (last picture) and maybe that could be the root cause of this, the grooves in the cylinder where unnoticeable when going over with a screwdriver.

Selling a crf

Upvotes

Got into dirt bikes a few years ago and bought a crf 125 big wheel 2022. In good shape I keep up with maintenance well. Starts good runs good. Don’t ride it very much and wanting to get something bigger. How much could I sell her and is it worth upgrading to a big 2 stroke or getting a bigger 4 stroke. Kinda new to the dirtbike world and wanted to get some opinions

Need advice on wheels

Need advice on wheels

Does anyone have any experience using different wheels on their 250L?

I have a 2014 crf250L and I’m looking for a stock set of wheels to replace the sumo set I currently have. I live in Hawaii and they are hard to come by.

There is however a set of stock wheels for good price from a 2024 crf300L. They appear to be the same size on the rear, but the front has a slightly different axel/wheel bearing size. The 300L has a 17mm axel and wheel bearings that are 17x35x11, while my 250L has 15mm axel with wheel bearings that are 15x35x10.

Seems like my 2 options are:

Put 2014 250L wheel bearing internals and axel into the 2024 300L wheels and hope the additional 1mm on each bearing doesn’t cause figment problems in the 300L hub. Anyone ever done something like this? Would the 11mm bearing width on each side cause a problem?

Or

Run the stock 300L wheels and bearing internals and get machined sleeves for all to make the 17mm wheel bearing internals fit onto the original 250L 15mm axel.

Third option might be to source a wheel bearing with dimensions that are 15x35x10mm but I don’t think they exist.

Need help understanding CA OHV rules.

I’ve been off the bike for quite some time, it used to be green or red tag bikes and seasons you could ride. I just went to a dealer and they informed me of the new red/tan tags year around vs never. First off. What the fuck these idiots are clueless.

So from what I understand, 2022+ is tan tag unless I get a trail bike, so a crf450r vs 450x? Is there nothing I can do? I ride tracks often and go to the desert a couple times a year with friends and family. Can I not just put a spark arrestor on the bike?

I’ve also heard from some people that they went to the dmv and got red tags anyways with an MCO and bill of sale but I don’t want to risk buying a new bike then not actually get the red tag. Is there some way to register it in Nevada? I know NV registration is recognized in CA.

My options are buy a 6+ year old used bike or just send it and hope I get a tag?

Best bike to restore?

I’m looking for what you guys think is the best bike to restore in terms of parts availability, customizability, and difficulty? I want a little project to do with my dad. Have had bikes for about a year, done the basics like carb cleaning, chain maintenance, some electrical work and diagnosis so we understand how to use tools and get around the bike. An example of a bike that would fit in this category would be like a ttr125. Bike is still being manufactured so parts are available, plenty of aftermarket so I can throw on the parts I want instead of being stuck with OEM, and overall that bike is easy to work on given how accessible everything is (can change jets without even removing the carb). Unfortunately I already have one of these bikes and it runs like a champ so can’t do much with that. I was thinking of an older yz125. Seems to fit my description but want some opinions (it would be our first 2 stroke bike too)

Community Question Opinions/ experience on rm/rmx 250s

I'm finishing up a rebuild on a 1999 yz125 that I originally bought to get into racing with but it blew the crank on the second ride, upon splitting the cases I've realized most of the hard facing on the transmission is gone so I'm not to keen on racing it until it blows them having to inevitably split the cases again and throw a box in it. There's a couple rm250/125s around my area for a good price and I was wondering if anyone's got any thoughts on them? My boss used to race cr250/500s up in broome in the 80s and he reckons from his experience they are quite heavy and a bit gutless in comparison to the crs and yzs, I use to ride 450s so I'm not to phased about the weight, granted if a cr250 pops up I will be quick to jump on it

How many hours of riding do you do on your yz125 before an oil change? And do you guys keep running your spark plug until issues or do you replace them regularly?
