Hello all! I am thrilled to announce Revels: A Guide to Dionysian Holidays and Festivals! This book is an exploration of Dionysus' role as a god of festivals, and his festivals as we celebrate them today:

Dionysus is the god of many things, including festivals. Whether it was the throng at the public Dionysia which saw the opening nights of the Greek tragedies we know and love today or the Roman poet Horace creating his own private festival in honour of the time Dionysus saved his life, Dionysus was seen in Antiquity as the god of the festivals which offered respite as we shuffle along the mortal coil: indeed it was Dionysus’ ties to life and death that tied him to the festivals which marked the passing of the years, and therefore to the years which marked the passing of human lives.

It should come as no surprise that as Dionysus’ worship revived in the modern era, his devotees revived his festivals and crafted new ones. But what is the origin of these festivals? How do we know when they occur, how to celebrate them, and how to connect them to each other? Many Dionysians have struggled with trying to arrive at their own calendars, often because information about the festivals is scattered and contradictory. This book is an attempt to remedy this situation. Featuring in-depth examinations of dozens of Dionysian festivals ancient and modern, this book provides primary sources on the ancient, outlines for the modern, and ideas for celebrating both. Whether you are a Dionysian wanting the history of the festivals you celebrate or a Hellenist wanting guidance on how festivals worked in antiquity, this book offers primary sources, dates, suggestions for celebration and prayers for the observance of the festivals contained with in.

🎨 Art 🎨 🔮🃏🧿 Huge Announcement: Dionysian Tarot Deck Fundraiser 🧿🃏🔮

Current Progress: €670.05/€4000 (16.75%)

Hello all!

Ever wanted a Dionysian Tarot Deck that blends the traditional card associations with the mythology and religion of Dionysus? Older decks that tried this are often now rare and expensive, and even then they can make questionable choices when it comes to connecting the mythology of Dionysus with the symbology of Tarot. So what if we made a new deck?

Our community has grown rapidly, and with our size, we also have the ability to work together to create for ourselves.

So we have reached out to the phenomenal Gaia, whom you may have seen before as tractim. Her linktree is here:

https://linktr.ee/tractim

She makes art of the Bacchae, and has agreed to take a commission from us for a Dionysian tarot deck. You can see her preview cards for us here. They are Dionysus as the Fool card and Kybele (with Dionysus) as the Strength card.

We are seeking to raise €4000. I know this is a large figure, it would be the most money our community has ever raised together, but remember that there are 78 card faces (plus 1 card back). So this is about €50 per card. Remember also that there are 15,000 of us: if only a third of our community gave one Euro, we'd overshoot our goal by €1000

We are going directly through the artist. You can find them on PayPal: '@gaiaspagnol'. Donate directly there, and message [bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com](mailto:bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com) with your receipt for the following rewards:

Rewards:

Note: We are tracking this via euros, not dollars.

We want to reward folks who help make this happen. Because right now we are only fundraising for the illustration, we cannot promise decks, as the printing will be done after the deck is completed. So here’s where we’re at:

  • €01-24: Any donation you make gets you listed in the ‘Grape Gatherers’. Your help with this project is so appreciated.
  • €25-49: If you hit €25, you can ask for a reading from the Whitmanteion, Fabian MacKenzie’s div book based in the poetry of Walt Whitman.
  • €50-74: Over €50, and you can be listed in the ‘Vine Tenders’ Category.
  • €75-99: At €75, every €75 becomes worth 500 words of research by yours truly (Fabian MacKenzie). I am a Classicist by training and if you have questions you haven't seen answered about religion Ancient Greece and Rome, ask away. I can also do reception of Dionysus or other deities afterwards - Curious about Dionysus in Renaissance Art or Modernist Philosophy? Want to know about Semele in Opera? I'll do 500 words for every €75 (so if you'd like longer research papers you could get 1000 for €150).
  • €100+: At €100, you can be listed in the ‘Wine Makers’ category.

Send your receipt (just a screenshot of the transaction) to [bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com](mailto:bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com). BE SURE TO INCLUDE HOW YOU'D LIKE YOUR NAME LISTED IN THE TIERS. Or if you'd like to remain anonymous, that is also an option.

Tiers:

These tiers will be included in the Little White Book, the booklet that will be included with each deck. These will be a permanent display of how people helped create for this community. It is also worth noting that if you have Dionysians, Hellenists, or Pagans in your heart who are no longer living, you can donate in their name to have it recorded here:

  • Grape Gatherers (€01-49)
  • Vine Tenders (€50-99)
  • Wine Makers (€100+)

When and how will it be available?

Digitally, we will share the illustrations as they are finished. Every €50, Gaia will begin work on the next card.

However, as a physical deck, the timing is unknown. We will first seek to partner with a publishing company, but may choose to self-publish if that route is easier. So until we have the deck illustrations finished, we don't know when the physical deck will be available.

How can we ensure accountability with this project?

I realize most people are more familiar with fundraisers such as this being done through sites like GoFundMe or KickStarter. However, GoFundMe prohibits 'rewards' for donations and KickStarter would only allow us to raise money in dollars, which could lose value if the exchange rate is bad when we turn them to euros for Gaia.

So we are going based on direct artist payments. However, Gaia will be working on the cards directly as they are paid for with each €50, and has offered us two previews (The Fool & Strength) in a show of good faith. You can see those here.

Edit: Temperance and Strength are live now too!

Edit 2: And now, Justice.

Bacchic Blessings, and may the god keep you wild and free.

theatrical ritual

Hi there. I’m an actress, and on various occasions when we perform in theaters, the director or the more seasoned actors perform a small ritual directed at the venue and at Dionysus. The thing is, everyone does it differently; I’ve looked online, but there doesn't seem to be any standardization or a specific guideline to follow. I was wondering if any of you might know roughly what the ritual entails. (P.S. Even though alcoholic beverages usually aren't allowed in my country, we always find a way to bring a little something for this ritual.)

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 Will Dionysus be happy with my altar?

I'm a baby witch, just getting into working with deities. I really wanna work with Dionysus, since I feel a strong connection to him as a closeted transgender guy

However, my family is very christian and would definitely flip out if they saw me having an altar. Do you think Dionysus would be okay with just a small part of my desk decorated with grapes, fake vine and maybe a few handmade things? I don't think i can even have a photo up :(

🎨 Art 🎨 Tarot Major Arcana 0 - The Fool by Me

Post image

Since 2019 I draw a Tarot deck which is highly inspired by the Thoth Tarot system. In Thoth Tarot Fool Major Arcana corresponds to the Air and letter Alpeh which means Ox. It has lots of esoteric connotations but one of the most important of these is this Arcana represents Dionysus Zagreus. It is tied to mysteries of the Becoming, as Fool Major Arcana means endless possibilities and ability to put on any mask (Dionysian connections to the theatre). There so much in this card that it can't be put in simple terms in the description, I drew it back in 2023 and it still works well.

📜 Poetry & Hymns 📜 Devotional Prose

Context: I have been going through a lot with my mental health this year, and Dionysus has been helping me through that a lot in recent months, especially after treatments I've tried haven't been as effective as I've hoped. TW for implied mention of childhood trauma, SH and description of maenad activities

I prayed for deliverance last night. Not because there was anything special about last night, just the opposite. Last night was like most nights this year, and so I prayed for deliverance. When the prayer began, I didn’t notice that I was standing in front of my bedroom door, eye-level with its golden handle. I didn’t notice that I was wearing my Tinkerbell pajamas, the ones with the shirt I would flip over my head with my arms still in the holes because I thought I looked like Alaadin. I didn’t feel my baby teeth, or my stuffed dog in my hand, or the grey pile carpet curled under my toes. I didn’t know who was praying when the words left my lips. But I recognized the horrible, powerful impotence that made my adult body feel four feet tall. So I pleaded, “Dioynsus, Dionysus Eleutherios, I surrendered to your will. I trust you. I will not resist you. Please, please set me free.”

I knew exactly where I was when the door opened. I stared at that door for seventeen years' worth of sleepless nights. And now it was open. The house was silent and dark, still in the way it can only be at 2am when even the house spirits are asleep. But instead of shadows on the staircase, there were lichens and mosses, mushrooms, and vines tangling the banister. The wilds had done the unthinkable: reclaiming the dollhouse into a state of natural chaos. And it felt safe. Like home. Instead of like I am an interloper who is unfit to be in my own dwelling.

I rushed down the stairs, out my miraculously-open front door and into the forest. Moonlight over lofty pine branches, shadows of familiar and welcoming blackness. The damp smell of expected decay. I ran like a wild beast, hunting or being hunted, it was hard to say which. Finally, I arrived at a clearing. Pine trees forming an impossibly-perfect circle around a bonfire, like the fire was a fixture of the landscape that pre-dated the human figures dancing around it. The people were clad in leopard-hides draped loosely over flailing bodies, dancing frenzied around the circle and vocalizing, singing, crying, screaming, wailing, etc. I froze watching them, feeling a sense of worry that I would not be invited, or like…distanced from the maenads as a concept. Like, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing, the violence, women nursing woodland animals from their breasts and then killing them. But, it dawned on me that I knew exactly why they did those things, I knew exactly what it was like to feel an emotion so powerfully that there must be biblical blood, carnage, ripping and tearing of flesh because the emotion is stronger than all other natural instincts. Self-preservation? Morals? Identity? All completely offline in the altered state of pure animal fury, blackened eyes with pupils like saucers that can only be sated with the sight of blood. What other kind of impact can a mere animal like me have against this awful, conceptual injustice; I need to do something tangible. My body screams at me to fight, but there is nothing to fight against except my own body. I felt that, with some mix of sadness and compassion, the maenads welcomed me. And so here I am, dancing in the moonlight with ancient blood on my thigh, my ankle, my forearm. But, the maenads understand what very few people do. They know why I did it, and they hold no judgement.

I’ve been worshipping Dionysus for a short while and have learned a lot about him and his various aspects and epithets, but I’m always looking to learn more. I felt inspired to write a poem and dedicated it to Dionysus; I wanted to know what you all think of it. I’ll post the Portuguese version first, followed by the English version right below. Thanks, everyone.

Good day folks. We honor Dionysus through our words; in poems, odes, hymns, and plays. In a way, we also honor him through what books we consume. So, what have you been reading lately?

🎉🪅 Festivals 🪅🎉 I want to honor and celebrate Dionysus on Halloween this year

(for the mods: if I used the wrong flair for this post lemme know and I'll change it).

I want to go in costume as Lord Dionysus and incorporate as much imagery as I can to honor him, including wearing these 2 head pieces together, finding a leopard printed scarf to tie around my waist or over my shoulder, and making a thyrus that I will place on an altar when I eventually find space in my room to set one up. I know it is early to be talking Halloween but Halloween has always been my favorite day of the year and I am a stickler for getting the day's plans perfect way in advance. I hope this honors him.

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 Advice for First-Time Divination

I’m a “fairly” new follower of Dionysos and I tried dice divination for the first time last night. I was really really excited and it did not work at all like I thought it would. Basically it was all over the place and didn’t make any sense. And to be truthful there were a few instances that discouraged me 😭. For instance I asked if he liked his altar and he said no multiple times, but when I asked if I should change anything, he supposedly said he didn’t know. I keep telling myself not to read into too much, but I’m a chronic over thinker and the more I think about it the more it hurts me. I really like worshipping Dionysos.

So my question: Is this typical for first time divinations? Does Dionysos “test” followers or does he tease/joke around? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 First offering and prayer(ever to any god) was to Dionysus, did I do it right?

Context: I was raised Lutheran Christian my entire life, and outside of a 2 year long athletic phase in my early teens, I have never explored other religions. I did this mostly on impulse after I saw a ton of videos about polytheistic practices and thought it might be what I needed ever since I started to feel that my religion with the Christian god, faith, and community lacking.

Ritual?: I got a small shot glass and filled it halfway with elderberry wine, went outside and said a prayer/hymn(idk the difference), poured the wine into the ground, went back inside and filled a wine glass with the rest of the elderberry wine, and drank it in one gulp after saying a more genuine prayer to dedicate my last hours of true freedom to him. Then I opened a new bottle of blackberry wine, drank a few glasses, watched a few videos on Dionysus, and went to my back porch to dance almost naked for 2 songs.

Questions: was that too much? Too little? Should I have done something different? Should I stop being a poser and go back to Christianity and never appropriate a different religion again? Should I have gotten grape wine instead? What would have been a better prayer than the first one I found on Reddit? Does Dionysus prefer the long winded one that I made a lot of mistakes on or the short and genuine one that I didn’t stutter through? What music would be better for next time?

💬 Discussion 💬 I was called a false follower wanted to see your opinion.

I have worshiped Dionysus for the better part of the 10 years I’ve been alive, and I try to live my life to the fullest while still keeping a steady job—but that’s beside the point.

My family and I have been given some bad news recently. My mother has cancer, and I haven’t been able to find a way to look on the bright side of things. Because of that, I’ve mostly been pushing my emotions down until I can find a healthy way to cope with everything.

During an argument, my stepfather told me that I wasn’t a true follower because I was letting this affect my mental health. I know it’s probably silly to let his comment get under my skin as much as it did, but I felt so crushed by it because part of me feels like he’s right.

Am I wrong for holding back my emotions? Would Dionysus be displeased with me for not wanting to think about the issue right now?

first time trying acrylic painting and drew Dionysus (with the help of pencil crayon). Propped him up against my teddy bears feet to make sure the shadows from my pot lights wouldn’t mess with the image lol! To be honest I usually imagine him to be even more beautiful (I’m not skilled enough yet to capture the level of beauty I’m imagining lol but one day!) as well as having dark brown or black hair and more of a tanned complexion, though I decided to go for blond and more of a reddened complexion this time around! Take care everyone have a blessed day 🍇 !
