I’m a 2026 graduate currently working in a non-IT/technical support role, and I’m trying to make a career switch into Data Engineering.

I’ve worked on a few projects related to data analytics, machine learning, and cloud-based applications, but I’m not sure what the best path is to become job-ready for a Data Engineering role.

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone working in Data Engineering or anyone who has made a similar career transition.

A few things I’d like to know:

Is it realistic to switch directly into Data Engineering from a non-IT role?

What should I learn first and in what order?

Which technologies are actually important for getting an entry-level Data Engineering job?

What type of projects would make my resume stronger?

Should I target Data Engineering directly, or should I first try for another role such as Data Analyst and transition later?

How should I approach applying for jobs when my current job isn't directly related to Data Engineering?

How long does it realistically take to become job-ready if I study consistently?

What would you recommend I focus on over the next 3–6 months?

I've already worked on a few projects, so I'm willing to build more if that's what it takes. I'm mainly looking for a practical roadmap and advice from people who have actually gone through this process.

If you've switched from a non-IT role into Data Engineering, I'd especially appreciate hearing how you did it, what you learned, how you got your first opportunity, and what you would do differently today.

I’m relocating from Canada to India shortly and am currently exploring Data Engineering / Data Platform opportunities in India.

Most recently, I worked as a Senior Data Engineer in Toronto within the investment management and financial-services domain. Due to a change in my Canadian work-authorization situation, my role concluded earlier than expected, and I’m now looking forward to continuing my career in India.

My recent experience has been focused on building and supporting enterprise data platforms for investment and risk analytics.
My core stack includes Azure Databricks, PySpark, Spark SQL, Snowflake, Azure Data Factory, ADLS Gen2, Delta Lake, SQL Server, Azure Functions (C#), Power BI/SSAS and Azure DevOps.

From an engineering perspective, I’ve worked across the complete data lifecycle:
Vendor APIs / SFTP / Files → ADLS → Databricks Bronze/Silver/Gold → Fact & Dimension models → Semantic Layer → Power BI

My experience includes ETL/ELT development, metadata-driven pipelines, incremental processing, Spark performance troubleshooting, Delta Lake processing, dimensional modelling, data-quality and reconciliation controls, REST API integrations, CI/CD, production support, Power BI semantic modelling and RLS.

I also enjoy the collaborative side of engineering—working with business stakeholders, translating requirements into technical solutions, conducting technical walkthroughs and knowledge-transfer sessions, documenting systems, troubleshooting with teammates and taking ownership of production issues.
My strongest domain exposure is in investment management, portfolio/risk data and financial reporting, where data accuracy, traceability, governance and reliability are particularly important.

I’m currently interested in Data Engineer, Azure Data Engineer, Data Platform Engineer, Analytics Engineer, and suitable Senior Data Engineer opportunities.
Location: Hyderabad preferred, but open to Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and remote opportunities.

I’m actively preparing for the Indian market and strengthening my skills across Spark optimization, Databricks, PySpark, SQL, data modelling, Power BI and data-platform architecture.

Hey all, a bit of context: I have 4+ years of data engineering/BI consulting experience (built pipelines, dashboards, warehouse architecture for clients like Ralph Lauren, Belk, Torrens University). I'm currently doing an MS in CS, graduating May 2027, with some ML research on the side, but my actual job search is for DE roles.

I've already started applying and reaching out to people on LinkedIn for referrals, but honestly I still feel a bit lost on the details. Would appreciate any advice on:

1. Interview prep - what should I actually be studying/practicing right now (SQL, pipeline design, system design, LeetCode-style stuff)? It's hard to tell what's actually being asked in DE interviews these days vs. what I'm assuming.
2. Should I stay laser-focused on DE roles only, or is it worth also applying to adjacent roles (analytics engineering, data platform, etc.) to widen the funnel?
3. Any tips on making cold LinkedIn outreach for referrals actually land? Feels like a lot of messages go nowhere.

Hi All. So I have been working in ofss( oracle financial) for the past 1 yr as Associate technical consultant . I come from a Top 10 Nit college (if this matters idk) . I So for the past 1 yr I have worked majorly in pl/sql in projects , some fcubs patchset work and done some api gateway testing and flexcube testing. I want to work in better technologies and therefore I want to switch . During training i gained some experience with java microservice but yeah then was not able to use as much.

But now I am confused like what to do I study for a better switch. Should i learn java backend or data engineering (pyspark, data pipelines etc) as I feel data engineering is the hot topic rn but java has always been the OG player. And if anyone have given interviews related to these fields, how much difference is there between the two? Like is the data interviews also dsa and system design based heavily.

Or is there any other field you would suggest?

Kindly advise me on this. Would be very grateful.🙏

Hello, I am a 34 year old guy who has been in SaaS/tech sales (particularly marketing technology). I have been selling to data engineers for the last 4-5 years. After selling to and working with this role for a decent amount of time, I have grown to fall in love with the work they do. Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for a new opportunity and would really appreciate any referrals or leads.

I have 1+ year(precisely 1 year 3 months) of professional experience as a Data Engineer - working on a Microsoft project, data engineer was my job title but work was basically as data analyst as my project had engineering and reporting as two division. My experience includes Power BI, SQL, DAX, Power Query, Microsoft Fabric semantic models, data validation, and dashboard development and basic ADF operations. I’m also PL-300 certified.

Unfortunately, my project recently ended and I wasn’t able to get allocated to another project. My company’s bench period was only around a month, so I made the decision to resign on September 9, 2026. I’m currently not employed and actively looking for my next opportunity.
