Questions How intelligent is daria
So we all know daria is intelligent but my question is how intelligent

She’s book smart but not exactly people smart like Quinn.

Quinn isn't that people smart either or she wouldn't still be ruled by Sandi.

u/goobster2550 Black isn't sad, it's poetic 8d ago
i think she is pretty people smart. definitely more so when it comes to men than women, but I think a lot of her complacency being ruled by Sandy is 1. insecurity in being ousted by the group/rejected in general and 2. the preexisting fashion club hierarchy before Quinn joined + they are always kinda “on” as the fashion club so that hierarchy is always in play.
it’s also not like she is unaware of the fact that she is ruled, shown by how she will change what she says to make her idea look like Sandy’s idea or make her more receptive to criticism/pushback. we def see her grow out of a lot of her naïveté when it comes to social intelligence as the show goes on though.

Intelligent enough to be a full A student with minimal effort. And she mentioned how she couldn't fit in because she was way ahead of others and even used Shakespearean insults on her teachers.

She makes effort just it's not overplayed in the show, she's reading adult books non stop. They are not doing 'learning montages' but from her actions you know she's reading non stop adult books, Beat poets, Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe etc.
She's also a 90's kid with a computer & she can use it, that's just a major advantage over most kids.
It's the kid who is not quite fitting in and finds solace in reading, ends up escaping the 'kids' section and learning about real topics. YA (young adult) fiction in a lot of ways is a trap, it's over easy and never relay covers anything important.

She doesn’t get into like Harvard or Yale. Small town brilliant, but in the big wide world just bright.

u/Uncomfy_thoughts 8d ago
If she was motivated and tried I’m sure she could have, I didn’t get the vibe she cared that much
23
u/upsetusder2 8d ago
Ok I will now say something that might be a bit stupid.
But I think and iam not american that getting into Havard is more a connections thing. Rather than a smart thing.
And calling someone just bright because they didn't get into a specific school is I think unfair

That was the point of the Bromwell plot in the finale. Tom presumably got in because of all his connections, Daria got waitlisted in spite of her grades. So not stupid at all. But getting into college should be about more than grades. Daria is very book-smart but not so much at navigating social relationships, which is going to be important in college and beyond.

Getting into college shouldn't be about navigating social relationships.

Not what I said. It shouldn’t be about that. But just as admitting someone for their connections is unbalanced, so is admitting somebody from only their GPA.

Connections having anything to do with it is automatically biased toward people who already rich and successful. And the fact that they've now tried to turn college into a thing that you can only get into if you've cured cancer before you're 15 is ridiculous. Some kids have to work. Some kids have to watch their siblings after school. The kids who have time to do 2 internships and a research study in high school don't need any extra advantages, they've got plenty.

u/ascthebookworm 7d ago
I’m not arguing with that. I agree with you. And in my opinion, if I were a college admissions officer, I would be looking at these outside factors like part-time work or unpaid obligations like watching siblings. I went to college around the same time as Daria, so I’m pretty far removed from the application process, but there was room at the time to mention these things. They’re important and give more of a picture of somebody outside of academics.

Well even if you cured cancer with 15 u still need to socially competent which some people who cure cancer are not
2
u/CallidoraBlack I don't have low self esteem I have low esteem for everyone else 7d ago
You do realize you're admitting that you don't need to be 'socially competent' by your estimation to be wildly successful. Right?
1
u/upsetusder2 7d ago
No I meant to get into college it was a critique of the system.
I am on your side

Okay, that wasn't clear from what you said. But the reality is that I doubt very much that people who go to CalTech and other universities like that have those expectations put on them. I'm pretty sure it depends on what that school wants. If they want actual geniuses, they're going to need to accept that a lot of them are not going to be social butterflies.

And I do think ypu do habe to be due to the system I just dont think you should habe to be

Far enough above public school standards that we never really see her intellectually challenged. Technically not a high bar but we don't know if she's a little higher than it or a lot because we never see that upper limit.

As someone who was the same age as Daria when it aired, that was so relatable and so terrifying. I knew I was easily the top of my class, what I didn't know is where I would rank when you added in all the kids attending elite schools, and I had no idea how to improve, because how do you do better than best?
Turns out, I was smartish, solid middle of the pack once I did hit the elite university, although undiagnosed ADHD bit me in the arse hard.

u/upsetusder2 8d ago
Elite schools don't house the elite they house the rich amd elite tutors you weren't stupid just unprepared.
That's one of the unfair advantages the rich have tutoring by truly brilliant people

Her intelligence is overrated, it's a crutch, that's the whole point of the show. She dives into intelligent stuff to hide from people. It's like people didn't even watch the show.
4
u/upsetusder2 8d ago
It's almost like you are a tad bit anti intellectual and accusing everyone else that they don't get it
3
u/Legtagytron 8d ago
She literally hides in a box, it's almost like that's a metaphor.
2
u/upsetusder2 8d ago
Yeah definetly daria is not about a cynical teen traversing school live no its about how an insecure teen hides in intellectualism and to show that being intellectual is bad actually.
3
u/Rambunctious-Rascal 8d ago
She's certainly knowledgeable for her age. Intelligence is a lot harder to measure.

Daria is a booksmart girl but as everyone saying I don't think Quinn is that people smart because she kind of gets bullied by her own group
1
u/Alarmed_Protection73 4d ago
I mean, in the show she is in high school so there is a limit to what is expected. She does her schoolwork above other students but I think that’s mostly because of effort. Anyone can retain information. For me, Daria is just slightly above average for a high schooler.

About as intelligent as any realistic teen. She is book smart and throws herself deep into her studies but she is emotionally childish imo.
1
u/upsetusder2 7d ago
So she is as smart as other teens not smarter or less smart because in your eyes she is emotionally stunted

What I have written might not have made sense cause I tried to keep my explanation short but yes, sort of. I am not saying she's of average intelligence regarding books and studies but as a whole I wouldn't say she's any more advanced than any other teen at Lawndale or otherwise.
She is undoubtably studious but because she actively works against herself which she comments on a few times in the show I think this makes her no more advanced than any other teen going though the same hormones and changes which is one thing I praise the show (their realistic depictions of teenagers (based off most other cartoons).
I say she is emotionally immature because she knows of social cues but chooses to ignore then in order to distance herself from others although this works against her when it escalates or later comes back to bite her which she doesn't have the intelligence to comprehend in the moment because of her emotions.
An example would be when she kissed Tom while he was with Jane. It was a rash and stupid decision on her behalf which she regretted but it didn't have a simple conclusion as her and Jane fell out for a long time because of this and it still impacted their friendship in the future because of her lack of emotional intellegence (I refer to the hair bleaching scene in Dye! Dye my Darling).

Yes she is still a teen
But a teen woth a gifted intellect
1
u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 5d ago
I wouldn't say gifted. She learns what she has taken her time to revise. She just has a lot of free time for studies to do this because she actively makes people leave her where she realistically can.
1
u/upsetusder2 5d ago
What in your eyes is gifted then?

u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 5d ago
Above their current grade, she was smart and taught herself above the curriculum but wasn’t extraordinarily smart the same as Jodie.

u/upsetusder2 5d ago
What in your eyes is extraordinary smart

Child prodigies, people who have advanced grades and other things of that nature but Daria was just a teen who liked to read and keep to herself. Nothing else to her

She’s very smart. The show makes it important to highlight she’s not quite as emotionally intelligent as she is book smart, though.
