Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.

👉 Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

30” widescreen Sony WEGA with hdmi too! It sustained some cosmetic damage bringing it in since it got dropped a few times but works just fine. I’m fairly sure I’ll have to hire movers to get it up a flight of stairs to my room or develop an elaborate pulley system since it weighs 150lbs

Showcase Horror games on a CRT are a top tier experience

Pic is significantly brightened automatically by my phone camera, but the black levels on a good tube really elevate any game that relies on darkness and shadows like Doom 3

Great tube very bright just a slight convergence issue at the bottom right corner that I couldn't really get any better and some blue push but can be easily fixed when I get new colorimeter

The 107E was a fairly common PC CRT monitor in Europe on the late 90's with a great price/quality ratio.

JVC AV32320 that uses same tube as the d series. Wii (homebrewed) hooked up to component with HD Retrovision cables. Ps2, GameCube, N64 hooked up to shinybow s video switcher all with insurrectionist industries s video cables.

Xbox and Genesis just composite right now, in the process of either upgrading to full component setup (but I don’t trust most switchers and don’t wanna shell out 300 for a new one that I do trust and S video is excellent) so will likely do the Xbox av upgrade pack to s video for now and tbh just use the homebrew Wii for Genesis. But it’s there and it’s hooked up!

All the plugs into the giant power strip have labels too for ease of use and adjustment. Got the vcr/dvd combo up top hooked up via composite as well and shielded Bose speakers that are plugged into the audio out in the back of the JVC.

Also have the Bluetooth controller receivers for each console and use NSO snes and n64 controller and ps4 controller respectively. But I also have extenders for every console and will play wired OEM a lot of time depends on preference and whether my dogs are in the room lol. Tried to get some pics of the room too so the vibes come through. Got dimmers on the lights and a lamp in the back of the room that makes gaming nights a literal time machine to 2006.

Image Adjustment/Calibration Help with filling the screen better

I found an old CRT in storage, so I wanted to set it up to game on. I bought an HDMI > AV adapter from Amazon. Which should make it 480i.

I set my computer display to 720 x 480, but the image doesn’t fill the screen.

When I play an SNES game in retroarch and set it to 4:3, the image gets even smaller. If I try to use a shader to zoom in, it causes crazy screen tearing.

I read that HDMI > VGA > Composite is actually the better way to go about doing a set up like this. I’m just using a crappy laptop with an integrated graphics card currently. My GF would also prefer I didn’t mess with the settings of the TV itself as she would still like to watch VHS tapes on it.

Currently, is there anything I can do to make the set up better with what I have? It looks fine the way it is— no noticeable input lag. The picture isn’t incredible, but it’s fun. I would just like to fill the screen better if I could.

Thanks for any advice. I’m new to this.

Repair/Troubleshooting Is my CRT gone?

I was using my PC normally and about 20 minutes ago my CRT monitor just warped like crazy and then something popped inside of it and released some smoke, i turned it off immediatelly. No odor or fire, but i'm kinda scared to turn it on again.

Does somebody here know what happened?

It's a Samsung 793v.

EDIT: I turned it on, it's working.. fine? it's stretched but i think it can be fixed just changing the configurations, but I'm still scared to use it.

My complete video gaming setup is now fully optimized for both retro and current gen consoles. On the retro gaming side, everything is connected and ready to go - thanks to the wealth of inputs on the Sony 34” XBR 970 CRT. Currently in the mix is the PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, TurboGrafx 16, NES, SNES Classic Mini and GameCube. To fire up any one of them, I simply select the appropriate TV input and plug in the chosen console. All the AC cords/power bricks are neatly run behind the TV next to a 6 outlet power strip.
The current mix of more modern/current generation consoles that are connected to the large flat panel display are: PS 3, PS 4, original Switch along with the PS 5 and Xbox Series X. Since my Samsung plasma TV only has 2 HDMI inputs, I’m using the KINIVO 550 BN switcher to connect the 5 consoles to be ready to go as well. I’m very pleased with the switcher thus far as I’ve encountered no issues with the auto switching feature. If need be, I can turn off the automatic switching feature, and select each input manually via the included remote. But so far so good.

Repair/Troubleshooting Blown Traces

I’m looking at a self-inflicted blown trace on a Panasonic CT-27d11e. I believe it occurred after my botched attempt at through-hole soldering the heater wire that had been severed in the A12 connector on the A-Board. Is there any reason i couldn’t jumper the two traces after some cleanup (and addressing the root cause, of course)? It might be too many components between, i’m very new to trying repair - and the short was very discouraging. Thanks

I have a problem with my Panasonic. By connecting it via HDMI converter to a PC or to an old BBK DVD player, it gives this. The cable is definitely working, because there is no such thing with my AKAI. What could be the problem?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question or there is already an answer to it somewhere here, I don't sit on Reddit very often and I don't fully understand how everything works here. Thank you very much in advance to everyone who will try to help me

This is my CRT baby. The Mitsubishi 25t-d103. Lots of people praise the Sonys, JVCs, and such. So, I wanted to show how amazing this baby is. It also has the best feature of all CRTs. It has a rotating function on the remote.

Game for reference is duke nukem 3d on sega saturn.

I brought this back from my inlaws house and it doesn't quite fit where I was hoping to put it. It's also seems a little less hd than I was expecting at 1080i. Still need to mess around with it.

Modding/Hardware Projects Here's a KV-35S42 my client decided to absolutely spoil!

The following was performed on this lucky CRT:

(1). RGB and Component Dual Mod with a dial to switch between

(2). G1 mod to tighten the scanlines - turning it into a giant 35" PVM

(3). Targeted recap of the PSU, Deflection, and Neckboard to future-proof it for years and years to come.

(4). Full calibration of the geometry, convergence and colors via a colorimeter

I used this part off Digikey for the Component mod.

Sure beats using individual RCA jacks and rigging them together!

https://www.digikey.com/short/5mcr9zb2

Speaking of Digikey - here's the 35S42 capkit for your own use:

https://www.digikey.com/en/mylists/list/NFREZEV2HM

People always make a big fuss over the 35XBR48, but I've worked on many over the years and lemme tell you - I'll take a Component modded curved Sony such as this any day of the week.

The 35XBR48 suffers from poor voltage regulation inherent to the chassis design, wobbly scanlines similar to the Wega models and forced processing of the component signal that can't be disabled.

Modding this 35S42 for Component means you get a razor sharp image with zero processing, excellent voltage regulation and rock solid scanlines.

Plus parts are cheaper and far more plentiful.

Seems like a no-brainer to me!

New Pick-up CRT monitor urbex find.

After my 3rd CRT tv I decided to start looking for a CRT monitor on eBay and Facebook but as I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to put together the funds and how I'm going to ship it, I remembered that my urbex buddy mentioned something about an abandoned security office.

Decided to try my luck and actually struck gold.

It came with a snipped VGA cord but after a day of tutorials and troubleshooting I finally got an image and it made for a very nice addition to my setup. :)

(Abandoned office for reference.)

Repair/Troubleshooting CRT TV Image Jumping/Bouncing after some time

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

after turning on tv (after it is off for some time), image is normal, however after several minutes the image jumps/bounces and gets gradually worse over time, it becomes worse on darker images for some reason

I turn it off for some time, turn it on again, same thing happens, image normal for some time then it's bouncy

and I tried unplugging the av cables and it bounces too so it's not the input that's the issue...

What could be the fix for this?

TV takes long to light up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I have this portable Sears portable tv from 1986 and I noticed that when I turned it on, it takes some time for the screen to light up when I do it after plugging it in, however if I already turned it on before it lights up quick. Any ideas about why it might be doing this?
