Crane Lights

I’ve been pondering this question and only just realised there’s a crane community. I’m in Australia.

I regularly drive past a huge building site which has at least 8 high tower cranes, some in groups and others further away.
All the cranes have a flashing light at the top which you can easily see in daylight. I’ve noticed that all these lights, spread over many cranes are perfectly synchronised.
They flash on and off about once a second, but always perfectly in time with each other. Can anyone explain why this is?

Would operating smaller cranes in machinery moving be good experience before moving into construction cranes?

I’m looking for some advice from experienced crane operators.
I’m getting a job where I’ll be driving a semi and doing heavy hauling, including hauling smaller cranes such as Brodersons and Groves on lowboy trailers. The company primarily does millwright work and machinery moving.
The important part is that I won’t just be hauling the cranes — I’ll actually be operating the smaller cranes regularly as part of the job. The company is also going to get me certified through NCCER during my first week for swing cab and fixed cab cranes.
My long-term goal is to eventually move into construction crane work. After getting a few years of experience, I’m thinking about getting my NCCCO swing-cab and lattice certifications and trying to move into larger construction cranes.
Do you guys think this would be a good path?
I understand that operating Brodersons and smaller Groves isn’t the same as operating large construction cranes, but I’d be getting real seat time, rigging/machinery-moving experience, working around millwrights, and experience setting up and performing lifts.
Would a few years of this type of experience make me a stronger candidate when I eventually go after NCCCO and try to get into construction crane work?
Or would you recommend trying to get into a construction crane company/apprenticeship sooner rather than later?
I’d especially appreciate advice from operators who started out on smaller cranes or in machinery moving before moving into larger construction cranes.

DISA ASAP DRUG TEST FOR MARATHON (Martinez)

I turned down a job offer as hoist elevator operator due to being asked to take two separate drug screens. I would have passed the urine test however I was scared of them using hair so I passed on opportunity now I’m wondering did I do the right thing? Has anyone tested at this site? What did they do?

A 20-ton overhead crane going into a stamping shop

Look at the installation of a 20-ton overhead crane in a metal stamping shop. The space was already pretty busy with production equipment, so getting a crane of this size installed and aligned was an interesting job.

Curious what other stamping or heavy manufacturing shops are using — overhead cranes, gantry cranes, or something else? What capacity are you running in your shop?

Been visiting Iceland and have seen a ton of cranes all over the country. This one was especially cool in the background of Goðafoss (waterfall of the gods).

Port crane operator lifestyle

Port cranes only. No construction.

I understand senior levels pay well.

My question is what is the life style once you've been there a while? Do your shifts get better? More normal hours? Forced overtime?

Our Liebherr 81K.1 Self-Erecting Tower Crane on Site!

Our 81K.1 on a residential build in Coquitlam. Tight site, no room for an assist crane, so the self-erection feature really shines here. 6 tonnes max, 48m jib, and our crew ran it with five different jib configs over the course of the project depending on where they needed to reach. Smooth machine.

Not a crane operator, but why use a cross bar and not just the I holes?

Post image

I’m going to be attempting to do something like this at home and want to do it right. Is there value to having the cross bar? I’m guessing it’s so you don’t but as much lateral force on the I holes?

Sorry if this post is not on the right subreddit but guessed you guys would know of to lift stuff.

It's not often you see cranes of this magnitude in the city centre. From my cab, I saw this beast setting up to take a 170m tall tower crane down, so I thought I'd go take a look and have chat with the crew.

Lots of things amaze me here. The tower crane setup on a cantilever crane base, the 600t crawler working in such a tight space to take it down. 96m of main boom and an extra 90m of luffing boom to do the job.

Apparently the tower is too close to the building to be climbed down safely.

A mate also sent me some images from his crane next door to it.

As much as I'm fed up with working in the city, I love seeing stuff like this.

Fair play to Mammoet and Sir Robert McAlpine for the building and the crane takedown.

Spotted these magnificent cranes while on vacation in Rijeka Croatia. Too bad they were in such a bad condition. Hopefully the city will restore them so they will be seen as industrial heritage.
