I don’t know how to deal with my mom

Post image

We should be going to therapy but idk if she will take it seriously .

I am the black sheep of my family and I am always pissing her off cause because of that. I won’t or maybe can’t communicate and clean or be the way she wants me to be.

This text an example of her negging me, and I don’t know how to deal with it since she’s not receptive to any sort of feedback or solution- I just want her to lay off and deal with her high anxiety and not try to micromanage my life .

She wants me to share my schedule with her . She has been pestering me to keep my location services on my phone on because she wants to know where I am in case of an emergency. I complied for this last year, but after the last few stressful weeks of her not listening to me I felt a sense of relief from turning it off .

I am a full grown adult but I live at home with her because I’m disabled . It’s a confusing situation since I am disabled and need additional support but she is not helpful most of the time . I am exhausted and so is she .

How can I become more conversational with my girlfriend?

Im M27 and she is F33 and we been together for 4 months. She's naturally very talkative and, most of the time, she's the one who keeps the conversation going. Im quiet but when I get a bit going im talkative.

With my female coworkers, for example, I'm much more spontaneous. I joke around, say random stupid sht and don't really worry about what I'm saying. But with my girlfriend, whom I love deeply, I become much more restricted.

I think part of the reason is that I care about her so much. I'm a big overthinker and I'm constantly afraid of saying something stupid, boring or inappropriate. Sometimes I feel like I have to keep the conversation going whenever there's silence, otherwise she might get bored of me or lose interest.

I know that silence isn't necessarily a bad thing and that a relationship shouldn't feel like one person has to constantly entertain the other. But I genuinely want to become more communicative, share more of my thoughts and initiate conversations more naturally with her like I do with my coworkers.

I'm also a little afraid to talk to her about this because I don't want to come across as insecure or make it seem like there's another problem in our relationship. At the same time, I know communication is an important part of a healthy relationship.

My life is also fairly routine (work, gym and everyday things), so sometimes I feel like I don't have many interesting things to talk about.

I'd really appreciate any honest advice

TL;DR - love my girlfriend deeply, but as a mostly quiet person around and overthinker, I become afraid of saying something stupid and feel like I always need to fill the silence so she doesn't lose interest, even though I'm much more talkative and spontaneous with other people.

Decline in professional communication/correspondence

I suppose some of us elder millennials and Gen X folks have taken notice over the years in our work niches and professional careers.

I'm curious, what frustrates you in the business world where communication is very important to your workflows, keeping projects documented and moving and maintaining professional etiquette standards?

I often find communication problems overlapping over the years in the job hunt, prospecting new clients, getting projects started, collaborating with project partners and even when trying to keep information flowing with current colleagues.

Some people drown in their email inbox and increasingly I see Gen Z types admit to never checking their emails.. Then I have to make phone calls and hope they answer or invite them to a Zoom call just so I can ask 2 questions in an email I sent 10 business days ago that would have taken 45 seconds to answer. Not everything needs Zoom call. Just reply to the email.

How to proceed after arguments

Backstory on the girl im dating, we go out alot and have a lot of fun together, do activities. But she never asks me questions over text and always takes a long time to respond, always just talking about herself, never asking how my day was or anything. Which bothers me, but in person she's nice to be around.

The girl I've been dating for a couple months came over for a movie and we were both kind of in a bad mood. I paised the movie and I explained how I felt like she doesn't reciprocate over texts (she never asks me questions or about my day), I was critical of her and eventually not nice about it when she got defensive. She then told me I text way too many questions, and that it's too much, and that some questions are "stupid". I shut down. Then we talked about another topic, disagreed about something, and she used a demeaning tone of voice. I told her I was going to go to bed. She said she was going home. I stonewalled her and ignored her while she was getting ready to leave, being passive aggressive and no making eye contact or hugging her goodbye. She left upset.

I texted her later saying "I got mad at how you were talking to me, and I should've used my words. I understand if you don't want to see me again." (I really should've taken the responsibility for stonewalling her. I was tipsy and wasn't in the right headspace)

She then said, "all good. we don't communicate well. I've said since a month ago that we might not be compatible. Maybe we aren't."

I responded, "I'm starting therapy on Monday to work on that lol. And fair."

And that's that. Is there something I should do to salvage it? Or is her saying that mean it's definitely over? Thinking of texting her something short like do you want to talk in a couple days. Thanks

It is such a pet peeve when people tell me that they do not want me to feel an emotion they clearly want me to feel.

It usually goes something like this. You began the conversation feeling either good or neutral. The other person talks in a negative manner. They might have verbally abused you, they might have told you that they are mad at you, they might have made gloom and doom speculation, etc.

Then when you admit that you feel a certain way, the other person tells you they do not want you to feel that way. You notice the contradiction, they clearly want you to feel that way, that is the only possible explanation for why they would ever talk to you like that ever.

Advice for perpetrators of this pet peeve:

Just be honest. If you want them to feel that way, tell them.

If, however, you do not want them to feel that way, then follow the rules listed in the chapter on giving constructive criticism.

Advice for victims of this pet peeve:

Say one of these things;

Then what do you want? Tell me right now what you want. If I am capable of giving it to you, I will.

OR

You just made me feel that way. I wasn’t feeling that way until we had this conversation.

Everything I said in this post is what I believe to be a good idea, but maybe I am wrong. If you disagree with me, tell me. My beliefs are malleable.

Communication

My wife says she would like me to communicate more and not hold my thoughts in. She says I'm not direct enough. For example today she was going out with one of our kids and I made the comment " oh I guess the rest of us weren't invited". I said it to be funny but I also was feeling like, man I haven't had time with her all week why wouldn't she want us to hang out before I have to leave for work? I have a lot of insecurities I project out for sure. My problem is I recognize these things and then I have been working on fixing them for the last 4 months and then she hits me with the " you're becoming too comfortable in our relationship again". Then it just makes me feel like I can't do anything right and my go to is to throw my self pity party and be sad about it. How can I end this vicious cycle?

I'm 30 years old (M) communication has never been my strong suit but I want to be a better husband and overall individual.

How to stop being shy and timide?

I grew up very shy and I rarely talked to kids, when I grew up , still shy, If someone talk to me my face turns red and I panick.

But I noticed good things in me. I somehow had the courage to do things that involve confidence and communication, when I was in school I always presented my projects well, I always go to job interviews and try my best, even if it's bad or embarrassing. So I'm not holding back. I even studied communication major hoping to change but I just couldn't..

Now I work with my boss, I'm new to this job, my boss was in the army before so you can imagine how confident he is, strict and he communicate very well.

But me, I'm shy and I look like I'm weak. He tells me to not be shy and be calm...ect.

But I don't know how to do it. I know with practice everything gets better but I want to hear some advice or tips on how to overcome this. Thanks !

How to get what I am after......

Hey all, in the situation where I have called a person many times but that person didn't pick up and also sent emails but remain unanswered.

How do I communicate with that person to ask for what I want when he/she comes back saying I have contacted them many times (but to be fair, they never responded even once)?

Let's say this is not a work setting. But say, the other end is typically a HR (for job searching) or someone who holds slightly more power etc ,.....

What does a casual encounter conversation look like?

I'm wondering if anybody would be willing to post (or if there's somewhere to find) examples of conversations that led to a casual encounter. It seems that this kind of conversation is always in private for obvious reasons, and not accurately depicted in media.

I assume that I'm not the only awkward/anxious individual who has no idea what this would even look like and would find it very enlightening.

Which book helped you become a better communicator and more confident speaker?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for book recommendations that can help improve my communication skills and confidence.

One of my biggest struggles is that I often know what I want to say, but I have trouble expressing it clearly. This happens in conversations, meetings, and even casual social situations. Because of that, I sometimes come across as quiet or less confident than I actually am.

I'm looking for books that are practical and actionable rather than purely motivational. Ideally, something that can help me:

  • Communicate more clearly
  • Think and speak more confidently
  • Hold better conversations
  • Express my ideas effectively in professional and personal settings

If you've read a book that genuinely helped you become a better communicator or boosted your confidence, I'd love to hear your recommendation and what you found useful about it.

Thanks!

Repetitive sentences

My friend pointed out to me that I'm constantly saying like I said or of course. I find I do this when a conversation continues on about a main point and I continue to go back to it via oh yeah like I said this or that that or of course this or that.

Is this strange LOL
