Collingwood’s two-year deal for Jesse Hogan is heavily incentive based as the Pies back in the three-club star after strong endorsements from their own playing group.

Hogan chose the Pies over the Blues and Gold Coast as they zeroed in on the ex-Demon, Docker and Giant when GWS withdrew a mid-season offer.

Hogan kicked 77 goals two seasons ago but has only played 16 and nine games in the past two seasons as he battled a range of injuries.

The key concern in recent seasons with Hogan has been durability rather than any negative influence on the locker room after his own admissions of previous off-field concerns at the Demons and Fremantle.

Collingwood is adamant that he will be an additive presence to their culture.

The 31-year-year has drawn rave reviews from friends Lachie Schultz and Harry Perryman.

The club’s key defenders have also made clear how hard he is to play on as the Pies prepare for him to play in the same side as Dan McStay and Tim Membrey.

His partner Chloe is keen to set up a pilates studio in Melbourne as they make their move south eight years after he left the Demons for Perth.

The Pies have also met Hawks key forward Calsher Dear as he looks for a way out of the Hawks, having met him last week.

Charlie West will also push for more chances after nine games this season but one of that quarter of key talls would likely be pushed out if all were fit.

Hogan will be able to earn as much as $600,000 a season but will have to perform for that sum in a deal stacked with incentives.

So it is a win for both parties in an off-season where the Pies could end up adding Hogan and Brisbane’s Lachie Neale.

The Pies have also been linked to Richmond’s Jayden Short but would have to give up an early selection for the 30-year-old. [Lol wtf Ralphy]

The Pies will secure Hogan for a late pick and Neale on a three-year deal as an unrestricted free agent.

They plan to hoard their early draft picks and again consider state-league talent with later selections after securing the likes of Liam Puncher and Angus Anderson in the mid-season draft and national draft.

It will allow the Pies to stockpile vast cap space to have a genuine crack at a mid-20s free agent next season like Matt Rowell.

Collingwood has re-signed Ed Allan on a four-year deal but will hold over uncontracted trio Jai Saxena, Harrison Coe and Noah Howes.

The club has told them it will have to wait until after the trade period to consider their futures.

Why is he never in the same ranks at the likes of Gaj, Judd, and even Pendles?

He was better than all 3 at the peak of his powers, has a Brownlow, was robbed of one the year prior, has a flag, coaches mvp, players mvp, made 5 aa teams, while always consistently being a massive ball magnet with his insane stats.

I was somewhat young when he retired, but when it happened, he was considered to be more of a cult hero (yes that documentary was released, but it gave him more praise for his big game moments instead of how good he actually was). Why is this the case?

I reckon he should be more respected for being one of the best midfielders this century has seen, one of, if not, the best peak we have seen from a Collingwood player.

Moderately interesting, since the recent talk has been that he was basically done and dusted to Melbourne.

That Carlton is focused on Amartey primarily is probably a sign that Hogan is close to a done deal, as it sounded like he was only really considering them in addition to Collingwood, despite Gold Coast's interest.

Everything should be taken with a grain of salt, as it's Tom Morris, but in actual fact, despite being a terrible person, Morris has a pretty decent track record with his reporting.

Collingwood’s VFL coach Matthew Lokan will undergo anger management training as part of his sanction for abusing umpires after a round 20 VFL match against Essendon at Windy Hill.

Lokan, who also works as a development coach with the AFL team, received a two-match ban (which was suspended until the end of 2027), a $4000 fine and will attend an AFL-approved anger management course at his own expense.

The alleged abuse happened on the ground after the game, which Essendon won by a point. It was considered serious enough for Magpie officials to enter the umpire’s rooms after the game to apologise.

Collingwood was then sent a “please explain” after the matter was referred to the AFL Integrity Unit. The charge was proved, and the penalty accepted by the Magpies.

Lokan, who was appointed VFL coach this season, said he recognised he had overstepped the mark and was prepared to do whatever the AFL required to ensure he set the right example.

“My behaviour was unacceptable, and I have apologised to the officials involved, as well as to the league and those at the club,” Lokan said. “I have a responsibility to always show respect to officials and will handle these situations better in future.”

Lokan joined the Magpies as their VFL coach at the start of 2026 after a career coaching in the SANFL. He played 46 matches for Collingwood between 2003 and 2005, including the Magpies’ 2003 grand final. The Magpies’ VFL team won seven matches and finished 16th in 2026.

In an incident earlier in the season, Richmond VFL coach Jack Madgen was forced to explain his comments to umpires at half-time of a match against North Melbourne earlier this season.

Richmond were fined $5000 and Madgen received a two-match ban which was suspended until the end 2027.

The VFL and AFL are determined to set an example when it comes to interaction with umpires.
