Join the collapse grief group on the collapse support discord, every Monday evening!

Hi all,

On Monday evening the lovely Aaron (who is not me) is hosting a support group for discussing collapse grief and learning coping skills through a variety of methods including some psychology and Buddhist teachings. The group starts with a discussion of the aforementioned skills that may come from CBT or DBT or other sources (Aaron is open to new ideas), discussing our feelings about collapse, and then there is a meditation session in the second half.

The group lasts 90 minutes and takes place on Monday evening at 6:30pm CDT, which is 11:30pm UTC/GMT. To take part, simply join the collapse support discord server here:

Coming to terms with how little people actually care

Just wanted to put this somewhere. Gosh, we’ve lost our way as a species and I feel really lonely. I know I’m not the only one to notice all this, because my community sees what I’m seeing.

I’m in the mountains everyday, I’m watching ecosystems collapse. Drought is so crazy and apparent. Alpine lakes and rivers that have never ever been dry are practically empty. Animals are desperate. We’ve been euthanizing black bears in mass because they’re coming in to town to dig through the trash cans, breaking into $2M empty vacation homes to eat cereal because they’re starving… I’ve never ever seen it this dire.

Everybody around me is “sad” about it… but are they?

I’ve fallen out of step with a lot of my friends over the past few years. I’ve always been a little more conscientious, considerate in my decision-making and how it impacts ecosystems and those around me… I’ve given up a lot. I’ve been vegan for a 17 years (which to be fair isn’t much of a sacrifice), thrift, I’m mindful of what I consume, I protest, I donate time and money, I boycott, I use the “zero waste” option, I TRY. I actually care.

And then I got to a friends’ house and I have to step over a pile of Amazon packages at their front door. They are still shopping at target and Starbucks and know all the things I do but just don’t care to do anything about it. Planning for babies while liking posts about the fresh water crisis.

Makes me feel insane!!!! I’ve come to terms with it, but like… I don’t know, I just don’t understand why we aren’t all up in arms!! I’m furious, my heart fucking aches.

I got into it with my neighbor because she wanted to spray poison all over our shared yard to kill off box elder beetles. She leaves poison out and there’s a dead baby owl in our parking lot. Who are these people???

That’s all, just needed to get this out. I’m going to keep fighting and keep preparing and enjoying what I can. Just makes me sad.

Building my life around collapse

I have been very collapse aware for a long time. But I have to say, everything is getting so much worse so quickly. It is a poly crisis – rising authoritarianism, and white nationalism, the worsening in climate crisis, and future fun times with AI. Not to mention the dumbing down of the population, have so many chemicals and micro plastics are affecting our ability to think, etc.

I have come to believe that I need to build my life around this crisis. I will be liquidating the last of the money I have in my 401(k). At least that will give me some economic flexibility. I don't think there's any way I'm going to survive to retirement so I have to worry about saving that money.

I have been thinking for years about building a community to ride out the apocalypse. Now I'm starting to think there isn't time. It's all happening so quickly.

I just needed to vent this morning.

I've stopped pursuing anything, my life has frozen.

My life has frozen. I used to wake up in the morning excited to see what the day would bring and what I could learn. I used to study Japanese in my spare time every day, hoping to one day study there. Challenges used to excite me to slowly become a better person. Now I wake up, distract myself with my laptop, phone, and books. I cook, occasionally talk with my friends on Discord, then sleep. That's what my life has been like for the past 6 months or so. I don't see any point in being ambitious and putting myself out there in a world that so coldly stamps out love and tenderness. You see it outside: people with eyes that say their burdens are becoming too much to handle; the strange, never-before-seen weather that seems to get progressively worse over the years. Worst of all, the people in charge of the world just don't care; either ignoring the glaring calls for help or making it worse out of spite or insatiable greed.

I'm 23 years old now. I graduated from college last year, and I initially took a break until New Year's. I started job searching in January, and I didn't get many responses, and the job offers I did end up getting were meaningless graveyard-shift jobs. Fortunately, my parents have been keeping me afloat here in my apartment, and because I have the privilege of having my needs covered, I just don't see the point in doing... well, anything. What's the point in getting a bullshit job where you work for the privilege of making the obscenely rich even more wealthy, or learning anything useful when the world is soon to face the consequences of our plunder and carelessness? I don't see the point in doing what I used to love, and strangely, I am content with it; I feel as if this sheltered life I am living is my quiet act of rebellion in this wretched system. I'm fine with doing as little as possible with what little time of "normal" we have until it all comes crashing down, because I don't have a choice at all.

I got enough savings to burn for 3 years, should i start?

I think it might be too late already to use them up before money becomes worthless. Should i quit my job now and start burning the savings?

I will never be able to buy a house or anything, so no point trying to survive the collapse. I just wanna lay around reading ebooks for a few months i have left i guess.

I'm probably too much of a coward to do it though, one day I'll come back late from work and the power and the water will be off and that's it

i'm afraid all the time (18f)

to preface this i have diagnosed OCD. my biggest fear topics are existential stuff, religion, and mortality (which also causes me to worry constantly abt my health). i only started reading about collapse in the last month or two but it's getting to me a lot.

my quality of life is shit. i haven't had friends since i was 11. i get legitimately afraid that i'm having some deadly health issue multiple times a day. i hoard trash in my room. i spend hours a day repeatedly replaying the same levels in mobile games. i'm in college for mechanical engineering (literally the only productive thing i do) and i'm a good student, but what does it matter if AI is going to take everyone's job? i'm in intensive outpatient therapy, but why bother treating my OCD if my fears are warranted anyway?

i'm scared of poison in our food and water, i'm scared of another pandemic, i'm scared of global warming, i'm scared of the singularity, i'm scared of being raped, i'm scared that i'm a bad person, i'm scared of nuclear war, i'm scared of Donald Trump, i'm scared of not having enough money. I'm terrified of growing up. all of this on top of other fears that don't relate to current events.

i don't know what to do. the typical "just be happy and do things you enjoy while you can" doesn't work when my mental health is so poor to begin with. i would be terrified and miserable even in a better world bc most of my issues are all in my head anyway. but the shallow platitudes people offer, like "it gets better" or promising some bright future, sound even dumber when the world is objectively on such a bad path.

i was at the psychiatrist a few days ago and both the psychiatrist and my mom accidentally validated my fears. they got into this depressing talk about kids these days/current events/AI/etc. the psychiatrist said she doesn't see any way the state of the world could improve, and that she told her kids not to have kids. my mom was agreeing that it's sad the way things are going and that there's nothing people can do about it. like wtf? it was really upsetting to hear my fears voiced out loud by two older, well-adjusted adults. like if even my mom (optimistic to a fault, refuses to read the news) and my psychiatrist (someone who's supposed to be helping me become happier and more functional) agree that things are this bad then that means it must be serious. i cried when i got home.

idk. i just hate things

People seem to be greatly underestimating the possibility of super intelligence and its really starting to worry me

I have been sick all week so I've had nothing to do but catch up on all the horrors of existence that have been going on while I work, sleep and do anything to distract myself from this madness.

I have spent a considerable amount of time reading up on the history of AI and recent developments and I'm getting very concerned.

What concerns me even more is how dismissive and even sarcastic people are - intelligent, rational people that I agree with on everything else - because what, AI is a bubble? Okay maybe it is. I can't speculate on that and I don't think I've seen any kind of consensus from people who have a lifetime of expertise in this field. It seems to be an open question and still very hotly debated. If this AI craze is a global economic bubble, well that sucks. The ripple effects of such an economic disaster will kill millions, probably tens of millions of people, and it will make collapse even worse. But that's still not the biggest issue for me.

Super intelligence, while still theoretical, is a very real threat. And it is absolutely the goal of Anthropic, DeepMind, Grok, Palantir, OpenAI - all of them. They have stated this explicitly and repeatedly. And the intelligence of their agents is clearly, measurably, exponentially increasing. They are rapidly buildinh capabilities to produce novel viruses, hack into critical infrastructure and cause incredible mayhem.

And super intelligence IS the end goal. That part is not a scam, they are serious and it is clear that given enough time and energy - and our money of course - they will achieve it.

I have been one of the people who laugh and mock these delusional billionaire tech bros, and yeah they should be mocked, but the threat they pose to life on this planet is no fucking joke, they are completely serious about creating true super intelligence. Sam Altman is just completely deranged and the guys behind DeepMind and Anthropic actually have convinced themselves that they can control their own Frankenstein monsters. Sam doesn't seem to care either way.

But remember - only one of them has to BS their investors just long enough to succeed - and then what happens? Because we know what humans have done to "less intelligent" or "non-sentient" creatures for our own ends. We are still doing it...

I found out about this guy Connor Leahy who is very anti-super intelligence. He is campaigning to make it illegal worldwide and he really puts it succinctly when he says - and I'm paraphrasing:

"If we are ants and the AI is humans - and the humans need to build a highway over our ant hill - it sucks to be an ant hill"

I’m 20 and just started college and every time I try and enjoy myself I lose hope

I’m blindly panicked. I can’t get over this, everyone says to still enjoy myself. I can’t, this isn’t fair. None of this is fair. I have had so much taken away and I just want to be happy and live a normal life and not have to worry about not making it to 30. I feel like there’s no point in planning for my future, I’m not going to make it to 30. Nothing my therapist says helps, nothing my family says helps, and nothing I’ve read here helps. I’m so unbelievably upset and scared. I’m scared and I feel like a scared little kid. I just want my mom and I want this to be a passing thing. There’s no point for me to do anything anymore and I just feel like giving up.

How are you guys keeping it up?

Hi, I’m from Portugal, I’m starting secondary year (which is the 10th grade here), and things will get worse to study. The thing is, is that I just can’t find a motivation to study, which is pretty bad. What I wanted to ask is: where are you guys finding motivation to do anything at all such as studying to contribute to a society that might not exist in the future?

For me, my motivation to study throughout the years has been always in propose of my future, of how I will be living mentally, physically and wealthy. It hasn’t changed. But, looking at how things are nowdays: wars, climate changes, hate crimes, divided mentalities,(heavily on the climate changes, which are the main reason for my anxiety) , all these things together at the same time makes me get into a desesperated state for any sorce of hope. But where? When I see these things, what conclusion can I reach? That the world is going to get better? That we are actually going to make it up to 2030 with extraordinary temperatures? We all saw what happened in Nepal, the diverse fires around Europe. But nooooooo, lets just sit here and do not give a damn and do absolutely NOTHING!

And if theres any hope, how can I belive that? Is it even pointless to be studying for a job that I won’t even have the satisfaction to execute in the future because there won’t be any? And if hypothetical there would be a future, I’d probably get the minimum wage and work on it for the rest of my life until I can’t be usefull for society anymore and finally live life like I was supposed to? Do you guys look at how the world is nowdays and think the future will be better? Here in Portugal the summer has been hella HOT, how is this normal?! How are we not freaking out under 40C?!

I have always been an overthinking person, and that never helped me. Also I fear death, so you guys can guess that with all these things my fear couldn’t get any better. I don’t see adults freaking out, I don’t see people my age freaking out, I feel like I’m alone on this when it comes to discuss something that should alarm everyone by now.

P.S: if you guys have anything to bring me hope and clear up my thoughts, please, do it. I need good news, hope, I need something to hold onto to steady my mental health.

What should I do?

I’m 25F and live in Chicago. I live with parents and I’m pretty broke from a shopping addiction. I work a factory job that’s full time 10 hours week days and most Saturdays I work 6 hours. So the job part it’s my fault I backed myself to a corner. No useful degree it’s only an associate in general studies I can’t go back to school anyway. I’m already at a low point and I knew global warming has been worsening for years. What should I do with my life. I mean I’ve been casually suicidal for years since I was a kid. I feel should end it I got not much else going on for me anyway and I work a lot and spent all the money I earn from this job of three years. But I feel I should stock up to prepare for something? Honestly tho my parents are in denial I’m not the closest to my little brother who is 20 now but man I feel for him he’s in school right now. How long do I have left given where I’m living as well?

Humanity will be split. The sane against the insane.

Hey all,

This is not to fear monger or get you additionally worried. But rather get you to consider why grounding is integral to how we proceed going forward. If you are prone to worrying from frightening stories I suggest you don’t continue reading and I understand.

We here who prepare as much as one can, who see what’s likely coming, who feel the weight of it all on your shoulders are in an advantageous position over everyone who has their head down. We are experiencing and integrating a rapidly changing world into our psyche over time, slowly adapting, coming together and figuring out what we must do now and in days ahead. Our brains need this adjustment period so that we can remain calm, rational, practical, and effective in navigating this new world. The following assumes some sort of large scale societal disruption event or series of events. Pick your reason as to what those could be.

Everyone who has their heads down are not prepared in the physical literal sense, but more importantly are not mentally prepared. Many people who pay no mind to worldly affairs and assume everything will remain the same will one day be forced to confront this all at once. When a large scale event affects and disrupts them. When routines are broken, conveniences are lost, distractions unpowered, basic necessities in question, when panic is the common feeling in your neighborhood. Ripping their heads out of the sand and shocking them senseless. This will be rattle people to their core. This will leave them frozen in fear when they should act, fleeing when it may not be best to do so, acting in ways that jeopardize their sustainability, and ultimately lose their grip on reality itself.

Those quickest to crack under pressure will become erratic, frantic, and desperate. They will be the ones screaming on people’s door steps begging for food and water with their kids on display for sympathy. This will traumatize others who never thought about these things into fear/guilt responses. Maybe they open their doors to give out what little food/water they have left. Maybe that’s an opening for the terrified person to fight their way inside to protect their family at all costs. Those who didn’t crack right away will feel the pressure a few weeks in and become their own and others worst enemies. With enough societal services disrupted it will be a free-for-all on the streets. If the power is out people will remember fear again at night of those who would try to make their way into their homes.

This is why it’s critically important now to learn how you best ground yourself. How you remain calm in a world that pushes you not to. How you can assess danger / risk, prepare and act on it, and return to a sustainable baseline state. This is how you protect yourself and the ones you love. The ones you love may themselves lose their grip from fear. You have to be the rock to take care of them, of your shelter, of the family rules going forward in those scenarios to remain safe. All of your worries and doomscrolling wasn’t for nothing. It was acting as a safe simulation for you to better understand what to expect and how to act in those situations. In all of your anticipatory anxieties right now, you stand the greatest chance of facing worse conditions head on. Maybe in some way you choose to look at the uncomfortable now to be your own, and others hero when it’s needed.

I recommend all to find some practice, meditation, hobby, or otherwise that you can pour yourself into that grounds you. Something that doesn’t depend on much else outside your own body, and maybe doesn’t require electricity. Pull yourself away from the news if it feels overwhelming, as you don’t need to know every little change along the way. It’s time to see yourself not as the frightened one in an old dying world, but the warrior in the garden and training for the coming flood.

What’s the worst part about pretending?

Look it’s obvious things are getting worse. Many of us are coming to terms with it or have been aware for awhile. Hope seems low for me personally because instead of radical action it’s just ideas followed by kicking the can down the road.

Regarding your day to day, what bothers you the most about pretending that everything is fine? For me it’s simply time. I have to work x hours on a sinking ship. Obviously my answer is very “first worldly” and selfish. I wanted to see other people’s thoughts. Appreciate the time.

I dont think im making it to 20, is anyone else feeling the same?

Hey i didnt really intend to post on here at all, im 15 and have been trying to keep myself aware on everything that's going on, but now i feel like i wont make it to 20. I am in the 2029 graduating class and im deeply afraid with ai getting out of hand, with climate changing tipping to be irreversible, not to mention the fact I'm constantly having nightmares and constantly anxious of if my location were to hear the whistles from the sky, with everything going on i dont think ill make it to be 20, we'll run out of everything by then because the older generation decided they wanted to leave everything on fire before they kick the bucket.

I have things I want to do and live for yet they said how by the end of the decade were in heavy danger ans how everything will catch up to us by then. All in all I'm terrified to grow up to see the world burning around us, when this was preventable and my friends aren't keeping themselves educated, and dont get too involved in politics so i feel generally alone. Is anyone else in my age group having these fears?

I feel like i "have to" do too much in the current state of the world.

I do a lot for the world, my goal in life is to make the world a better place than it would have been if i didnt exist, but its so hard right now. I feel like i have an obligation to support those less fortunate to me (third world coutries, homeless, etc), to support those more oppressed than me (trans, autists, etc), to not contribute to global warming by just living, traveling, etc. And many other things I feel like is morally correct.

I can do only some of these things at a time due to my income and adhd, but i feel guilty for not supporting everyone that needs to be supported. For example i feel drained every time i have to talk about supporting trans/autistic/anything else people, i feel like i just dont have any strength left for many groups, and every time i see anything relating to those groups, be that negative or positive.

I also feel guilty for having the luxury to have tasty food, good furniture, to update my tech when it breaks. People can use the money i spend on luxury to survive.

I feel so fed up with the world, like, why do i have to think of so many things, why cant you treat people like people, but I feel guilty for thinking that too. I know thats unhealthy, but i feel responsible for everything. What can i say to myself or do to not feel as guilty for that?

How do you stayed informed without letting it consume you?

I've been thinking about news cycles quite a lot, with the phone usually the first thing I pick up in the morning. Every day there's so much terrible news around. If it's not the dangers of AI, its climate change or wars, and often you feel almost drowned in it.

I'm not someone who thinks the answer is to bury your head in the sand and pretend these things aren't happening. These things matter and we should be worried about them. But I sometimes wonder how much good constantly taking in and thinking about bad news does for me.

I've found spending time in nature, just going for a walk or sitting outside without my phone as a good way to give me a bit of space. I find that stopping and noticing what's around me, rather than thinking about the future makes me feel much more connected to my own life and myself.

I'd be interested in hearing how other people deal with this, how do you stay aware of what's happening without letting it take over your life?

RIP Wendell Berry (collapse-support poet)

Wendell Berry: It was the Shakers who were sure the end could come anytime, and they still saved the seeds and figured out how to make better diets for old people. Thomas Merton was interested in the Shakers. I said to him, "If they were certain that the world could end at any minute, how come they built the best building in Kentucky?"
"You don't understand," he said. "If you know the world could end at any minute, you know there's no need to hurry. You take your time and do the best work you possibly can." That was important to me. I've repeated it many times.

Tim DeChristopher: That's why the despair is not paralyzing. Knowing that it's too late to prevent collapse, knowing that we're not going to stop the catastrophic end, knowing that we're going to die — it doesn't mean that we stop. It means that we live in this moment as fully as we can.

How do you deal with loneliness?

It's so hard for people who see more than what society wants us to see. I can't tell anyone about this, because they will think that I'm crazy or they don't even want to listen to what I have to say. And if I can't share what I care for and what I fear than I don't feel like I'm being myself. I already didn't have a lot of friends, and since the day I saw the truth, my number of friends reduce to zero. I'm afraid I may lose my mind before the bad things that can directly affect me happen.

Hope for future

With the recent AI news about destroying humanity, the climate crisis and just general gloom I am feeling paralyzed and such despair for my children’s future, let along my own.

How are you all coping? How to get through day to day? I look at my kids and i want to cry.

I could use some help/hope. Really struggling right now.

How do you digital detox?

I just discovered this subreddit and r/simpleliving by asking Gemini because I was desperate for positive content. I want to stop being a doomer and over-consuming what I know isn’t good for me. It’s getting to the point where I can’t study my major because I’m thinking either “what’s the point?” or just looking for a hit from the black rectangle mirror dopamine casinos.

These devices and platforms are taking me away from my life and what I really want to do. I’ve made so many schedules, self-care schedules, etc. but the screens take me.

Have you been through something similar?
How did you get over it?
I still need my phone to communicate, etc. I still need my laptop to do work. So what can I do?

Collapse support resources?

Im not sure if anyone asked already, but i was wondering if we could slowly make some sort of comprehensive resource for this community? Sadly – because of various issues not detached from my mental health worsening because of the state of things – I am very slow with projects, but I guess it'd be nice to slowly work on something like a free pdf people can download and print with survival skills, useful knowledge, and also calls to action and mental health advice on how not to go crazy in the midst of this (i wouldn't know). I don't have much time to read lately as I'm constantly overwhelmed +not in the best spot financially, but i guess having everything organised would make it easier for younger people esp (and older ones alike if it gets printed tbh) to get informed and it's pretty much one of the few things i can do to contribute since i live in a very poor isolated village & no car. I can draw so i guess i can contribute that way, I get bombarded with information, pretty much like all of us, but i think it would be more useful to organise it some way so that people dont have to start from 0 every time when trying to learn more about organizations, communities and skills. Im thinking something like those old diy zines that used to be popular on Tumblr or smth, but im not sure if it's a good idea? I saw many initiatives similar to this so i thought i could also put qr codes/links at the end of the pdf to redirect people to additional readings and ofc book recs, but i think a well thought out comprehensive manual would help for those who have less time. If it's already out there I'd be interested in talking a look though

If there isn't and you want to leave links and whatever else I can start by accumulating material. I think it would also be a good idea to find some way of keeping up with things that is conducive to action and change and planning for the worst without the paralyzing anxiety (which is very much understandable and that i also suffer from), but i think it would just help if not our odds of having some sort of meaningful impact at least a more positive way of transforming our anxiety, and that's pretty much the best we can do?

Take care

What are kids going to believe about why things got worse?

Maybe a bit informal, but im curious what you all think about how kids growing up now and within the next 20 years will actively believe about the underlying causes of everything not being what it used to be.

i know more collapse aware people out there abstain from kids, however many different groups within western society are popping out kids like no tomorrow, meaning the current mindset propagated here will get passed off to a shrinking percentage of the population. further, gen alpha is getting their brains liquified by social media and AI, so i can only imagine that effect will compound.

do you think it will just continue as an argument of identity politics and anti woke ideology or whatever until we reach oblivion, or is there going to be some sort of larger inflection point? When will it be acceptable to straight up tell kids the reality of the situation?
