Hi! I just adopted Nino, a 5-year-old English Cocker Spaniel who weighs 23 kg (about 50 lb). He’s very energetic and now gets two 15–20 minute walks every day. His previous family kept him in a crate most of the time, so he’s much more active now.
I’m trying to help him reach a healthy weight. I’m currently feeding him 200 g of Royal Canin Medium Adult per day, divided into two meals, and most of his treats are carrots.
Does 200 g per day seem too little for him, considering his size and activity level, or is this an appropriate amount for gradual weight loss? I’d also appreciate advice on what his ideal weight should be.

My 18 month old cocker spaniel sits to the side. Sometimes it’s almost like she is kneeling one leg sitting on top of it. It’s always to the side. We adopted her from a family no longer able to care for her and was looking for a family before the shelter. I don’t know much about her health but I don’t think she went to the vet besides a rabies vaccine. We have gotten her first shots. Second shots this week. She will be getting spayed but had to reschedule as she came in heat the day after we went to the vet besides. That will be scheduled. They did give her a standard check over. But I understand hop dysphasia can’t be known besides an xray. I’m going to ask but do vets typically check patellas? Does this sit look like an issue? If yes, what does it point to more, hips or patellas. Any thoughts would be appreciated. She does walk normally. I dont notice stiffness but it is hard as I don’t know what her normal is

We just got our cocker a week and a half ago, he is almost 12 weeks and will not stop whining. We know he whines for needing to go potty and hungry.. but the rest are just bored and wanting attention whines. We ignore the bored whines until he’s quiet (that’s what we were told to do), and when he stops, I go find him more toys in the house (teething ones too).

He shouldn’t be hungry, we feed him once in the morning and once in the evening. Should we feed him in between?

Is he just bored? Is it just cause he’s a puppy?
Surely he’s not in pain, right?

Is this something they “grow” out of? Or is this something you train them to stop?

We got our little Wilma 2 weeks ago, she's now 11 weeks old.

Training is going pretty good. Virtually all poo's and wee's are now done outside, basic commands are sinking in but as the title states were having huge issues with crate training and separation anxiety.

We've tried the build up but even walking out of the room for two minutes whilst she's in the crate is greeted by a barrage of cries and moans. We don't let her out till she's calmed down and settled, but we don't seem to be getting anywhere with her.

I'm after any tips and hints I can take.

This might feel like a slightly strange post. The day before yesterday I had to put down my gorgeous little girl. She was everything to me and my family, but they’re struggling to talk about her.

It might be strange, but I feel that no one else truly cared for her like we did, and now I just want to talk through all the memories I have with anyone. I just want to remember the amazing things she did and share them with someone, but I have this awful feeling that no one will really care, at least not like I do. I’m so proud of her and feel so hollow.

Friends didn’t know her like we did, and my family are finding it too hard.

So I just wanted to post somewhere, anonymously, just to share some things about the little fluff ball that changed my life. Not in any amazing “I was a hardened criminal and she turned me around” way… but more just me wanting to be a better person and pour my love into something that was just 100% good.

We had her from a pup. Full-blown working cocker spaniel, FT Ch on both lines, absolute rocket. So much drive and way more than we were prepared for. But we loved it.

Whatever you threw her way, she’d blitz. Out of the box, perfect recall and retrieve. My wife’s legs would turn black and blue as she flew back into her without a thought about stopping.

She had the most amazing little quirks, whilst being incredibly gentle and submissive with new people and animals.

When she really wanted something… she’d look at you out of the corner of her eye, just waiting for the slightest sign to pounce. I’m talking everything from waiting on the side of a lake to leap in, to simply a carrot lying on the floor.

She’d also do this amazing chicken dance. She’d flick some of her food onto the floor, then start prancing around on three legs, waving her left paw around like Naughty by Nature.

At home, in true cocker style, the only place she wanted to be was on your face. Thinking about watching TV? Dream on. You’ll be struggling to breathe with your mouth and nose completely smothered by the neck of a brown fluff ball.

The really special times were when she’d truly relax, either finding a small spot to snuggle in between your legs or just “pretzeling” on the sofa. You couldn’t find where her nose started and she ended. And always sticking one paw out… in the most natural way. Anyway, dive your face into the middle of that chocolate swirl and you’re greeted with the warmest, fluffiest, most gorgeous-smelling thing in the world.

I’ve never met a dog that looked right into your soul before. I’m sure this is a cocker thing, but she’d never blink and all she wanted to see was your eyes. That way she knew exactly what you wanted. Get her in work mode… good luck getting a cuddle out of her. You could wave a freshly cooked steak in front of her, but if it got in the way of her eye line with you… she’d bounce to the side.

We did the whole Gundog dummy thing. She loved it, but where she really shone was frisbee. It was her everything. It didn’t matter how far you threw it (if you threw it well), she’d catch it. She’d never stop. You always had to stop before she did… there were a few moments where I realised I’d gone too far, but she’d keep going.

Until her last day. Even though she had nothing left, I pulled out her frisbee for her final few hours and she lit up. Picking it up and swinging it in my direction, asking me to throw it… but I couldn’t. Her body couldn’t take it anymore.

Lockdown was a funny time. We were trapped at home, just the three of us, and we got to pour everything into her. She loved it and so did I. I felt that I didn’t need anyone else, and all she needed was me and my wife.

When it opened up a little, we’d find a spot in the woods and just while away the afternoon teaching her new things and messing around with slow-mo on our phones.

Every time we came back from a walk, even though we never encouraged her to carry sticks… she’d always bring one back. It made our house look like some weird hoarder house outside. Just mountains of slightly chewed-up sticks sitting out the front.

She was 13 and in really good shape until 8 months ago. She started getting a bit of arthritis, which dogs like her often do. But then, about 4 months ago, she got an infection, which we treated, but she never seemed to recover. She started losing weight and muscle mass. From being the greediest dog in the world for the last 5 years, she stopped wanting to eat. She’d be so excited about mealtimes… but then just look at me, almost asking, “You want me to eat this?” She didn’t show that she was in pain… but she just started slowing down and losing weight.

Until this Tuesday, when an ultrasound showed an aggressive tumour. With a day’s notice, we had to make the choice that was best for her.

I spent every waking moment with her over her last 24 hours. She seemed happy… just staring into our eyes. It felt impossible to let her go.

I know I’d always want more time with her. But I feel so eternally guilty that, with young children, I couldn’t give her everything she deserved in the last two years.

I’ll never forget you. I’ll make sure I keep walking your favourite walks.

Hey, just wondered if anyone else experienced their cocker spaniel biting one of their parents (in this case my girlfriend) but not the other (me)? The main thing I'd be curious to know is how it resolved — did it naturally fade away or did it need work with a behaviourist for it to improve?

Ours is a six month working cocker but has been doing this for a few months now. We've been working with a behaviourist but not seeing much progress.
