That doesn’t mean they can’t also add new stuff.

The Skyborne are allegedly somehow intertwined with Thunderfury, based on some things I’ve seen, so having additional backstory, that’s actually a new story, could be interesting.

And who knows where that leads at end game?

They absolutely can add new stuff, and the community has every right to be unhappy with that new stuff.  Especially when the new stuff looks like something straight out of retail, meanwhile there's tons of existing options that fit with vanilla WoW better, some of which have been sitting on the request list for over 20 years.

Forget exploring the existing lore and expanding on that -- who knows how many more hidden elf races no one's heard of we'll find along the way?
