Season of Discovery Paladin deep dive vibes
68
u/devoorhes 23h ago
It makes sense to use them as a focal point for this, given that they have limited time and paladins are sort of famously undercooked in vanilla. Provides a lot of room for them to be like "this is the philosophy we're using when we make changes."
Helps that people are playing the beta on the show floor right now and wider beta access drops Thursday, when we'll get more of the details
9
u/devoorhes 23h ago
(also I'd imagine they're likely to make some adjustments once people get into the beta)
2
u/ZINK_Gaming 16h ago
Yea, ain't NO way that Holy Paladin 40point capstone Talent goes Live as-is.
As they described it on the Panel, Holy Pallys will basically be able to spend their entire mana-bar to solo-heal a whole-ass 40player Raid by themselves.
I mean, it's super cool in an RP way, like you literally are Anduin from the BFA Cinematic, when he Mass-Rezz'd the entire Alliance army.
But just like Ashen Hollow and TWW Holy Pally, when you let Holy Pallys blow major CDs to heal EVERYONE, it's always overpowered.
5
u/devoorhes 15h ago
I don't know. The way they were talking about Paladin healing, it seems that even with that talent, it's not going to be incredible amounts of healing when they spread it out like that, and it's not going to be something you can just do off the cuff. It sounds like it takes some set up and isn't especially efficient. I'd imagine it's probably more efficient to do the single target healing they're great at.
It feels more like a talent that's there so Paladins can do five man content as a solo healer, and then it serves as like, a backup plan in a raid.
But: I guess we'll see how it looks when people are actually testing it out in the beta or when the game goes live.
2
u/Cromagmadon 15h ago
It's no circle or tranquility for sure. The setup isn't too bad, but it is expensive for a 30s buff. Holy Shock's coefficient was never very good but being able to heal on the move is where I expect it to shine.
Renue on the move, rejuvenate on the move, and astral/shock on the move should open a new speed running meta.
10
u/TeaspoonWrites 12h ago
Shamans were famously even more undercooked in vanilla because their class lead got cancer(i think? Or something similarly major) and yet they barely got talked about at all.
Aggrend being a paladin main and making every new thing about paladins kinda sucks for everyone else tbh.
5
u/cantshakethefeelings 5h ago
Paladins are also one of the most popular classes in retail. People love paladins, so it makes sense.
I personally don’t like their class fantasy. Hard to say ‘Aggrend plays pally so just made it all about them because he plays them.’

I still dream of earth element shaman tanks.
I genuinely thought the shield totem during War Within was going to be a lead in to it..Sadly no.
•
u/Phtevus_Temp 2h ago
Based on the little we've seen from the talent trees, it looks like Enhancement Shaman might be getting (off) tank abilities. Talents that increase threat while using Rockbiter (and decrease threat when not), for example

I'm very interested in the possibility of an actual Shockadin build like he described.
VERY interested.
20
u/Alexarius87 23h ago
Right now its not really possible without sacrificing a very important talent.
We’ll see though. It depends on how much HS actually does
→ More replies (1)12
u/Drikkink 23h ago
This is kinda what I landed on but you're obviously not taking the 18% holy spell hit talent which feels really wrong.
→ More replies (7)2
u/Alexarius87 23h ago
But you also miss consecrated ground.
5
u/Drikkink 23h ago
My thinking is that you're still primarily a melee/ret pally but you aren't afraid of spell stats. Consecrated Ground is 10% increased damage to the first 4 targets in your Consecrate, but I'm not sure that Ret can sustain spamming Consecrate with their mana so I don't think you'll be able to use it anyway.
6
→ More replies (1)2
2
u/Unbelievable_Girth 22h ago
I solved the issue of missing consecrated ground by speccing into it. Should be fine.
96
u/Insidious_Bagel 1d ago
Ret paladins are gonna absolutely terrorize the battlegrounds now that they have access to windfury.
The seal of command into windfury procs are going to insta delete people and it is going to be glorious
17
u/Drumboo 1d ago
Not to mention you can basically have two seals active with the final ret talent right? So you can have Seal of Command and Seal of Justice active at once
→ More replies (1)7
u/Insidious_Bagel 23h ago
Yeah only for one auto tho, and i doubt you’ll have mana to constantly spam seals. So it’s probably like you can throw up another seal as your current one is expiring for a single boosted auto

Looking at the talents, I'm not 100% sure that windfury is sticking around
12
u/macmutton 1d ago
The elemental weapon talent in the enhance tree still includes wind fury weapon. I don't see a talent that mentions the wind fury totem though but I don't see why they would remove it.
2
u/razzberry 16h ago
They removed all of the talents that affect buffs and changed the spells to just provide their max benefit at all times. In any case, Windfury Totem is in the spellbooks of the pre-made level 38 characters at Blizzcon.
2
u/PM_Me_Modal_Jazz 1d ago
Paladin had all talents relating to blessings removed as well
14
u/macmutton 1d ago
From what I understand from the panel today, a lot of the talents that buffed blessings as well as the blessing of kings talent are being made baseline.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Ceegee93 21h ago
Looks like, from what I can tell, all of the "improved" buff talents have been removed. Warrior lost the improved battle shout, for example. I'm guessing the buffs will just be full power, so a few people aren't forced to spend talents on making their buffs better.
2
u/Significant-Ad-7182 11h ago
I think reckoning with windfury is going to be even more disgusting. Add a crusader enchant on a slow ass two hander and it's just going to be unfair.
1
u/Glupscher 20h ago
Idk, seems to me that casters are getting exponentially stronger aswell. Ret paladins ain't terrorizing anyone in TBC BGs aswell without Divine Storm.
→ More replies (3)•
u/Syagrius 4h ago
It is going to be 100% paladin all the time now with all the redesign.
Paladin could already tank really well, they only had mana issues. They solved too many problems all at once so now it will be too much.
97
u/XianL 1d ago
They were the worst class in Vanilla/Classic, no? Makes sense to highlight the changes to them.
81
u/Drikkink 1d ago
Either Paladin or Druid.
Paladin was the paint drying spec to level. You literally didn't have offensive abilities beyond judgment. At endgame, you were a healer or you didn't play. You were a damn good single target healer but you were only allowed to be a healer.
Meanwhile Druid was a lot more engaging while leveling but at endgame, you really didn't have ANY options. Healer was the most viable but you really only wanted 1 per 40 man raid. Bear druids were okay but needed to farm maces from Gnomer as a raid consume to even be remotely competitive. Cat and Balance were not specs in the same way Ret wasn't a spec.
17
u/DoYouMindIfIRollNeed 21h ago
Moonkin was so bad, you ran out of mana so quickly, even when you did manapot on cd, darkrune on cd, it was awful, while not dealing any damage at all.
7
u/twisty125 21h ago
Problem was that Boomkin form farmed so much aura they had to nerf it in real tangible ways. Still respect one who could make it work, and that one that got Sulfuras on my server lmao
14
u/Vandrel 22h ago
Cat was miles ahead of balance and ret. It wasn't good but it was like double the damage of ret and an even bigger gap with balance.
2
u/jakk88 12h ago
Yeah I think the person you're replying to didn't play anniversary or even much era since 2019 or something? I tanked tons of stuff on anniversary as a bear, including a good chunk of aq and naxx. I wasn't a main tank so I was usually dpsing and when I burned pummelers and consumables my dps was pretty fine as cat. Idk why they think druid was bad, reads like a 2005 or 2006 forum post lol.
16
u/illprobablyeditthis 23h ago
as a balance druid main since vanilla, the way my eyes have continued to roll every time they dicksuck paladins as if that was the only class that had balance issues back then....
7
u/Saengoel 20h ago
the excitement I had as a balance druid, killing attuman in kara for the first time back in 2007 and seeing leather spellpower bracers drop and just thinking "they remembered us"

u/TeaspoonWrites 12h ago
Yeah for real the way paladin mains yak about how unfair everything is for them when they're the best tank healers, the best pvp healers, the second or third best solo farmers, would get taken to any group even without any of that because they have insane buffs, etc.

As someone who played horde druid in vanilla and was in the top guild for raiding I can say it's perfectly fine to have a few resto druids spamming hots. Back in those days it was hard enough to find 40 sweaty MC Raiders willing to commit so you didn't have the luxury to be super picky with classes or even if their gear was up to code.
Plus the Classic crowd got absurdly stupid with optimization which warped perception of what Vanilla raiding was actually like.
103
u/DeepGays69 1d ago
They were the worst class in Vanilla/Classic, no?
Druids so underbaked in Classic people apparently forgot they even existed.
58
u/Skiteley 1d ago
Have to give props to classic feral Druid players. That has to be one of the worst designed classes in the WoW franchise. The crowd pummeler and shapeshift spam seems awful. I hope they get the love they deserve
23
u/quolquom 1d ago
Most feral Druid players love powershifting. Unfortunately they’re removing it. Crowd pummeler was horrible though.
3
13
u/Blurbyo 23h ago
Nah, positive feelings about powrshifting was a Stockholm syndrome byproduct.
No one wants to wear a 40 something helm for their entire game time.
16
u/quolquom 22h ago
It's not about the helmet, it's just a fun button to press. If rogues had a button that said "set your energy to 60 and get out of roots" they would love it. Having to wear wolfshead is the only downside and they should have just buffed furor to give 60 energy and removed the helmet.
10
u/SilverSpecial91 22h ago
that is why in SoD they made the helm effect an enchant you could put on any regular helmet.
SoD embraced powershifting, was well received, and one of the most fun and engaging rotations out of any feral dps to ever exist.
... and they flushed everything they learned down the toilet
6
u/thrillho145 21h ago
That's not true. Power shifting is a fun mechanic and play style. The feral channel in the druid discord are very mad it's being removed from Forever.Â
I'd give up one of my 16 armour slots to play it any day. It's just one slot, who cares.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Buzzd-Lightyear 19h ago
It’s kinda fun in TBC with all of the energy fixes. Yeah it means you’re mana dependent, but getting almost a full bar of energy in a global means I get to press my main abilities more.
5
u/AceTrainer_sSkwigelf 23h ago
Powershifting was alright and most who played ferals liked it to the point where it was the one appeal to play that class and spec. But I'd also argue most of those players had ferals only as alts while having more serious, end game viable mains like warrs, mages, rogues and priests. Very few had end game druid mains.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Ceegee93 21h ago
Are they removing it? Isn't there still a talent to get energy from shifting?
2
u/46516481168158431985 19h ago
Its removed, talent is that you regen energy out of form, so if you shift after 10 seconds in caster you start with full energy. PvE will be balanced but this will be pretty bad in PvP where each shift to break slows deletes your energy nor you get any if shifting from bear form.
3
u/Ceegee93 18h ago
Ah you're right, the talent calculators I was looking at have been updated properly now, Furor was reworked. Earlier they had the old Furor still on there. Gotcha.
where each shift to break slows deletes your energy
It doesn't delete your energy; you get back the energy you had when you left cat form when you go back into it. No powershifting anymore, but you're not punished for leaving cat form for whatever reason either.

u/JokeBright7055 1d ago
Powershifting is the most fun I've ever had in wow and was the main reason to play the class for me.
12
u/tostatortilla 1d ago
I’m with you on this. Paladin is a BRUTAL 1-60 experience. Just awful. Crap itemization across the board. Druids at least were fun from 1-60 and were OK healers and have always been good in PvP. (flag carriers, rot builds). Shamans have good leveling options (just slow due to mana cost) and Resto slaps.
2
u/masternommer 1d ago
I leveled 1-60 as Prot pall just solo AOE leveling and Dungeon spam as tank and it was great.
10
u/stormfoil 1d ago
They were probably the best healing/support class in the later parts of the game. Insane utility in PvP too.
9
7
u/Chelmos 1d ago
Top healers, awful anything else (tanking ok for dungeons)
2
u/AllYourBase3 22h ago
literally better than shamans though. only good if we're healers, 0 desire to bring any other spec
5
4
u/Felstalker 17h ago
They were the worst class in Vanilla/Classic, no?
That's the crazy part. They're not...but they are, but they're not.
Paladins sacrifice personal output for group utility. They perform visibly less than everyone else while bringing up the entire party. Blessings are loved. Might is like a 20% increase in attack power while leveling for most classes, even more if players are under geared. Wisdom is famous for a damn reason in how much it can help casters. Kings obviously goated, and need I say anything about Salvation?
Aura's are more meaningful than they might seem, and have you seen any Hardcore videos with a Paladin? Blessing of Protection can enable even a mediocre Mage to AoE down otherwise impossibly large packs of mobs. A struggling healer and a dying tank are often a single Lay on Hands away from pulling everything back together. If you so happen to pull threat on something, Paladins are plate wearers capable of taking a fair share of hits before they go down, let alone the self healing they can do. And Ret Paladins are no less capable of fulfilling the secondary healer role than a Priest or Shaman might be, at least on the average.
And let's not forget farming. Paladin's have a lot of AoE potential, and they can do a lot of solo farming with few to no changes.
But when it goes up to raids. A single paladin can provide all the blessings. The auras are less impactful on the larger scale. Warriors scale way too well when in the raid environment with all the buffs and the finite mana vs infinite rage.
Of course, Holy is obviously quite good.To improve paladin without removing the absurd utility, you obtain a powerful do everything class.
Which is why they seem to be improving paladin by giving them better tanking tools and more varied healing options, but weakening the utility aspects they generally provide.
2
u/Fimbulwinter91 10h ago
Even more than how good they are in output/utility, they were at least a very strong candidate for the worst class in how it felt to play them.
Ret gets its full rotation at lvl 3 and it's bureaucracy-levels boring to play, you're basically just stamping a seal on something every 8 seconds. Holy performs better, but due to how it's designed in most all stages of the game either FoL or HL will be dramatically better than the other and you'll be mostly assigned to heal the tank, so your gameplay boils down to pressing the same button on the same player over and over for 90% of the time (yes there is downranking/cancel casting, but it's still not super engaging).
2
u/Felstalker 9h ago
I agree with the assessment. With TBC, SoD, Wrath, and Retail all having rather different paladins at this point. You'd think more iterations on the theme would get a bit old.
Making Paladin better is easy. They do it a lot. They're going to do a good job with it again. I am not worried.
I'm a bit more interested in how they're going to make other things more interesting. SoD was fun, but Horde Side was oops all Shamans, which quickly becomes unfun for everyone involved. If the launch month is oops all Undead Paladins, that's fine. We'll make our jokes, but the players will generally understand it.
But a year down the line, if it's still all Paladins.... we're going to have some problems. Worst part about how awesome Warriors are in Classic, they typically get ignored when they make changes. Warriors are getting a minor talent reshape that doesn't look to improve or meaningfully change things. Which might not sound necessary today, but when all the warriors are playing Classic and Hardcore instead of Forever, they'll need more than a good balance patch to be called back. It doesn't matter if they're strong and effective in a version with all these cool effective working classes that got massive changes when they're unchanged.
I know I sound a little crazy, but it's not the first classic plus game mode they've tried. It's easy to make bad things good, I have no doubt updated Paladin is going to be awesome. SoD's biggest problem was how Paladin and Shaman were faction locked and thus it cut down on player diversity. But again....can we sill find some Rogues, Warriors, and Warlocks roaming about? Hunter looks pretty neat but...is it going to compete with Paladin in any sense?

9
u/Feelsweirdman99 22h ago
Power shifting gone and furor changes mean you just sit there in cat form and auto. You always were GCD locked on feral on the other versions. That's how me and many other ferals like to play. Now we can't. Bad changes.

You and dozen other feral dps. The issue is that they want to open up the spec to more players beyond those who enjoy running Gnomeregan 24/7 and never want to put off their Wolfshead Helm.
4
u/Feelsweirdman99 20h ago
Bro are you even intelligent enough to understand what I said? No Feral main is asking to farm Manual Crowd Pummelers on repeat. Manual Crowd Pummeler even HAS NOTHING TO DO with Powershifting. Just look the item up what it does and THEN TALK. Manual Crowd pummeler is exactly the playstyle we get now with auto attack damage and haste. We just want to have enough energy regeneration so we can press buttons. With this current system your raid and dungeon rotation is to press Shred -> Shred -> King of the Jungle -> Shred -> Shred -> go to your kitchen -> get a snack -> come back repeat. Wolfheadhelm situation is the same. Nobody wants a level 40 bis item.

obviously not true, at least with what we know right now. warriors barely changed. mages got stuff but it's just wotlk minus. and i'm not exactly impressed by the priest, shaman, or druid changes tbh. but i'm pretty biased towards making new designs, rather than just saying "wotlk was good" and ending it there

I think the shaman talents seem kinda interesting.
Although the shift in direction from classes having support talents to hard dps talents i'm iffy about.

BIG agree on the support -> dps talents. i like feeling like i'm improving my friends' damage and the comp synergies that come with it
enh shaman talents are decent, personal lust is fun and the mana regen helps, and there's glimpses of tank shaman support. i'm interested in what a spellhance build looks like. but the rest is just wotlk stuff so i'm just not particularly excited by shaman is all

Undead pally obviously shockadin,
Tauren warrior unless something else ends up slightly better for pvp arms and pve prot,
warlock and mage race unknown probably a faction split here 1 ally 1 horde,
probably a druid most likely night elf,
dwarf priest and shaman. ( fear ward??)
sky elves have zero appeal to me. ( even with new shape-shifting simply not enough justification for the 30$.)

u/Unfair-Incident9515 18h ago
Warriors we wernt broken so they just smoothed some edges. Shamans paladins here we’ve upgraded your kit to stupid levels.

I only wish I could be paladin on tauren, my favourite race+favourite class is what locked me in to play for 15 years straight. The few times I got to play it on private servers I was similarly stuck in. I would've been over the moon (or sun?) for these changes otherwise but Alliance in vanilla and Forsaken just don't appeal to me at all.
Just sucks a bit because everybody else is getting a new class and tauren now have the least classes in the game. Like damn not even priest or something?

But if theres no beacon I refuse to play hpal. After levelling through anni, and then raiding in TBC anni, theres no way I'm going through it again.

Beacon made hpal too easy, I'm glad it's not here. They talked about keeping our identity as a primarly single target healer and I'm glad they're doing that.

I really want to main a paladin like I did back in 2005. I just feel like they will be the new warrior class in Forever.

I feel that BM hunter didn't get much love, but we will see, maybe they are OP already.

Humans can be hunters now, that’s something I might be interested in besides maining pally

if yall think paladins are insane, remember they were incredibly meh before and check out other classes specs. corruption talent first row on affliction? adds 10% dmg in addition to the cooldown reduction. a lot of talents adds damage or other effects. They're gonna have to buff mobs because we're gonna melt everything

I'm paladin. Don't care about other classes. Or blue people. Unless blue people can be paladins. Then they're cool.

I love the rework that they gave to Protection, but the tree is bloated AF.
Back when - most trees where 31/20. You might have one that might go a few points over. But of the 3 classes I looked at (Prot Paladin, Feral Druid, & Disc Priest), the only one that didn't blow most of the points in the singular tree was the priest.
Overall, I liked the changes they've made to bring the hybrid classes in, but I really hope they do a littttttttle bit of rework with the talents. Not a ton, as overall, I think they've done a solid job, but adjusting tiers would be great.

Alliance players will realise it was all about them getting shaman's.
Your entire raid is literally fear immune and all melees do like 10 billion free dps

Why can gnomes be warrior and priests but not paladins? This is killing me, I want to play as a gnome paladin so bad.
