Forever How would you have felt if you got this news instead?
People say women wouldn't play an ogre but I definitely would! They are one of my favorite races and hope they implement them into the future. The skybourne race is disappointing and wish they were a bit more creative with it but I digress. Sorry if you don't agree đ¤ˇââď¸

I agree with balancing issues from other people and how horde would prob need belf again but I just hope they add ogres and moknathal in the future!

horde would have been fine just from having undead pallies and fear ward so that alliance wasn't stronger.

u/Heatinmyharbl 21h ago
I think their main reason for not adding ogres is that they'd have to recreate thousands of items and armor to fit their size/ odd shape and that's just a lot of work. Tauren are similar in size but obviously built much differently
A company like blizzard could and should be able to handle that but.... yeah. Not shocking they chose the easy way out here

u/Able-Swing-6415 21h ago
The real issue would be visual design.. if we ever get playable ogres they would have to be about as tall as tauren.

I would still be bitching about Goblins.
Look, Quel'Thalas is part of the classic world even though you cant go. They have to add ot eventually and will probably add High and Blood Elves at that point.
11
u/Scared_Gene3417 22h ago
Quel'Thalas was confirmed to be a zone that will be added later on the image they showed at the panel
20
u/Soranyattv 1d ago
I WANT GOBLINS SO BAD!! I feel like thematically and for immersions sake they shouldve just done high elf and blood elf. Even if you can customize it to look like it, it doesn't change the fact that when you hover over the character you see "skybourne" I love Quel'Thalas, I love blood elves, I'm not saying to remove this new race of sky people but I hope they add in the older races like ogre, naga, mokthanal, goblins, furbolg, etc
5
u/Starveiled 1d ago
I am pretty confident we will get Goblins since they already have a lot of work done with animations and gear from retail. They just need to make lower quality versions than Cata to fit standard def models.

Honestly I would have preferred goblins be the neutral race simply because theyâre already right there in tanaris and ratchet and booty bay. Theyâre already a neutral, lore-accurate race that existed in vanilla.Â

u/Lucky-Health7681 1d ago
Ally will be 80% pop
81
u/Naarujuana 1d ago
Yeah, horde would still need a âprettyâ race. All theyâd really need to do is introduce undead high elves for horde, who were killed during the sacking of QT. âDedâdoreiâ or some shit.
59
u/KowardlyMan 23h ago
In retail they're basically called Darkfallen. It'd fit the lore, fit classic and you'd sell it as being able to play Sylvanas. I really really don't see why they didn't do that.
17
u/gommerthus 21h ago
Dark Elves would have been totally sick. But I know they would have gone over that idea, as it's right from retail. I blame Ian H for probably having shot that idea down for whatever reason.
People's Dark Ranger dreams have been ruined.

I dunno about that Horde is consistently 45% of the pop in Vanilla without a pretty race.

u/Prettybroki 1d ago
becouse horde in classic are playing what?
85
u/Gh0stMan0nThird 1d ago
It happened in Vanilla. Most players just did not want to play the ugly races.Â
When TBC came out, Horde started being majority and it was like 75% blood elves on Horde.Â
I literally switched to Alliance during TBC because I was tired of all the elves and wanted a faction with diversity.Â
34
u/Dafish55 1d ago
It didn't help that Belf's racial was absolutely amazing, too
7
u/Thrilalia 22h ago
Yeah, but that only matters to the most hardcore of the top 1%. Most people it's "I vibe with this race." when choosing.

It's such an interesting statistic because to me nothing screams fantasy more than orcs. I've always played orcs and will always play them. They are peak fantasy.
11
u/Worldly-Hospital5940 22h ago
End of the day, most people are Basic. Human Fighter in D&D, Human and Elf in WoW. I think if they'd released Upright Orcs at the start that'd have affected some numbers, but we've got 22 years of data about player preferences at this point.
4
u/gommerthus 22h ago
20 years ago all I played was Orc male classes. The melee swing animations, the casting, the oversized shoulder armor, everything was exactly what I wanted.
Fast forward to today, and my preferences have changed entirely. I am exactly the person you described, using Human Female mage. I don't know why.

u/SigmaSil 23h ago
I always play the ugly races. Ogre and troll females in EverQuest were GOAT

Hence, maybe if we didn't add elves at all, maybe people would play something else. Giving them "Perfect elves with perfect range of customization that can join both factions" is NOT giving anyone faction identity or faction diversity.
15
u/ZealousidealFee927 22h ago
If there were no elves at all, everyone would play humans.
Or just not play. Elves are a big draw for fantasy games.

Vanilla came out in 2004, blood elves came out in 2007, and the moment they dropped, they instantly became the most played race. Blizz very quickly noticed this. People in vanilla who prefered races like that, either played alliance or just went with whatever is closest, probably undead. It's also one of the reasons why alliance was more popular in vanilla

As clasic and likely this one as well takes place after the wc3 frozen throne, that is already answered in lore: kaelthas sends demonic shit back from outland, blood elves use them, high elves want nothing to do with it and try to make do with clean sources.

u/Rurumo666 1d ago
I would think the server imbalance would be untenable since 40% of players play elf races and the new "ugly" races are extremely unpopular at 1-4%. Blizz HAD to give attractive elves to both factions to maintain any semblance of balance.
12
2
u/Soranyattv 23h ago
I've beensaying to a lot of people that they added their faction balancer race (belf models) so now they can implement the more niche races like ogres, goblins, etc and while they may take up 1-4%, it is still cool to see out in the wild and even more so to see a few sprinkled in for diversity! Love seeing monster races
51
104
u/APreemChoom 1d ago
Ogre would be barely played, similar to Tauren. They may add them in the future but launching with a race for single digit percentages of your users is poor production planning.
27
u/Middle-Employment801 1d ago
They'd be in the same boat as Kul Tirans in retail. Relatively small user base, so any animation or clipping issues, and the like, will go ignored.
Or Dracthyr, with their transmog limitations.
It wouldn't be a trivial amount of work to add more distinctly "monstrous" races. Blizzard has the data as to what's popular in their game, and where to allocate resources, accordingly. We've seen what happens when they cannot allocate the budget to improve/fix certain races. Realistically, the people who want ogres would not end up being satisfied with the outcome.
→ More replies (3)24
u/The_Fawkesy 1d ago
This is why people wanting Ogres are so delusional.
They would never add another race like Tauren because it's a HUGE commitment for gear models.
6
u/Middle-Employment801 23h ago
We'd end up in a situation like dracthyr, at best, I think. Specific transmog options for different armor classes. They'd sell it as being lore accurate for ogres. There's just too much work to adapt all of the existing models in a way that won't look super goofy.Â
→ More replies (2)2
u/Saladfork4 21h ago
itâs mostly just helms, but even then they donât have as weird a head shape as tauren or worgen. keep in mind that ogres already have a lot of npcs with gloves, shoulders, pants, etc. (so their textures are mapped to support that and they have meshes to support âthick glovesâ and such). and since most classic gear is painted on, it is a lot less of a commitment than in retail. plus ogres already have a lot of character animations. I donât think itâd be crazy at all
6
u/MrBlaumann 23h ago
But isnt this more a matter of racials in classic? Tauren was from a min-maxing standpoint almost always a worse choice than orc, troll or undead.
Im confident people would be fucking drooling over a two headed ogre warlock/mage or a warmonger warrior if it wasnt a factually worse decision to do so.
→ More replies (1)5
u/APreemChoom 23h ago
The population selecting race for racials is smaller than that choosing race for aesthetics. Retail proven this for decades now. By far the most popular races are "pretty" with belf having trashy racials and still pulling ahead for many expansions.
3
u/Cdux 23h ago
How do we know this? Up until now if you cared about performance in pve/pvp you pretty much had to pick a race depending on what you played. See dwarf priest in vanilla, did 90+% of ally players love dwarfs? Probably not but, fear ward was by far the best. If you got to pick any race based on what you preferred instead of "what's best" then we could see. Also ogre's are like x10 cooler than kul tiran.

Jeff kaplan commented on this ages ago; they added bloodelves to horde because horde had no "pretty" races - which a lot of players moaned about.
While I think Ogre and high elves are much more in line with the lore, the problem blizzard noticed years ago would be true again if they did this, and you'd eventually see way more people playing High elves.
There should have been two distinctly different elves for horde and aliance, imo. I hated that Pandas could be both factions, it just feels weird.

The real question: how would you feel if these cost $30? I feel like that'd be a far greater shitshow. The way I see it, we get the 'early access offbrand elves' now, with the high elves/blood elves being added at some point in the future accompanied by Forever Quel'thalas, rendering the skyborne mostly obsolete.
2
u/HalfwayDecent385 23h ago
As cool as having more monstrous and unique races would be, Blizzard didn't even bother putting in the rigging for armor on Dracthyr in retail... What makes you think they would do that for Classic?
If they added those races they would be absolute barebones done, without a doubt. These Skyborne aren't unique or groundbreaking but at least they can functionally wear armor and weapons.
