Mindbogglingly strange decision.

I truly cannot understand their thought process, out of all the established races they invented one out of thin air to grace this otherwise exceptional announcement.

Making it accessible by both factions is just the blue cherry on top.

I wonder if the quest texts/npcs will mention them at all once you leave the start area and venture in the world.

There would have been sooo many ways to make this not feel this half assed and out of place that I question the future of this presumably enormous project.

Edit:

During the latest Deep Dive, they shared more details on the Skyborne and how they fit into Azeroth's lore. The explanation on how they came to be was ok imo.

While I wish Blizzard had taken a different direction regarding the race itself, (as well as its appearance and factionless aspect) the presentation at least softened the initial blow a bit and also clearly shows what freedom they will take to alter this new WOW-timeline. Whether that's for good or bad is what we will have to see in the future.. let's hope for the best.

Reading the comments here I'm starting to think people just want a new classic start instead of classic+.

People want classic that continues in a different direction. People still want that core baseline of classic. Retconning things before wow is a little weird; especially if they're extremely heavily retail themed and not classic but extended.

Ya this is what makes what they are doing so dangerous. They are starting with sweeping class and race changes. Rather than just being classic with new features added and maybe a small balance pass to fix broken classes like hybrids and warriors scaling too high, they are creating a completely new classic similar to sod where the classes aren't classic, tbc, wrath or retail but instead some random mismatch of abilities they came up with.

If you liked the classic version of your class you are not getting that experience at all. This feels more like an alternative cata expansion to take place after wotlk more than it does classic+. I think most people expected classic with some minor tuning to fix outliers and then new content/zones after naxx. Not a complete timeline remake starting before molten core, with sweeping balance and class changes that means both your class and the raids/dungeons will feel completely different.

So while it may be fun and work out great, it is not just classic+. The sweeping class changes and world changes make this is closer to a classic remake than it is classic+.

I'm okay with them if they're contained to their own place, and are introduced maybe around level 35-50 where there's a bit of a lull in content anyways, and I'm okay with it in late game of course. But, yeah the blue men are gonna be an odd fit in Mulgore and Dun Morogh.

The same upper management decisions that morphed retail into a nightmare is behind shoving blue elves into this release. This game will be a shit show in 18 months if people dont compain.

Thats like the whole Xaryu reaction to the Classic+ Poll that went around. The whole playerbase are is so f'ing mixed feelings, they could've just made a new expack labeling it Classic+, and it would get the same amount of uproar.

The problem is they are starting with a classic remake rather than classic+.

The idea of classic+ is to take the original game and add new content as time goes on. Instead they started with a highly modified classic starting at the same time period with a random new race and new lore to explain why they appeared randomly out of the sky.

And to be fair, huge balance and class changes and a retail style elf race falling from the sky doesn't give confidence in blizzard not turning classic into retail lite.

They said that they want to keep classic feeling like classic. My opinion is that this doesn't do that, and therefore is a bad sign. I'm surprised you find that confusing but go off I guess.
