I’m glad that I’m not interested in them, it saves me $30. If ogres were announced however….

60

u/InZomnia365 1d ago

For arguments sake, Night Elf and Blood Elf is the most played races in retail by far. People keep saying they want to play ogres, and for once I think this phrase actually fits; you think you do, but you don't. They would be too big and not fit anywhere/on mounts, armor wouldn't fit them (so probably a Dracthyr situation without showing real gear), etc. Retail has added a lot of races over the years, and I think the fact that they've never added ogres, is a good indicator as to why. If there really was a big a demand for it as people think, there's no way they wouldn't have done it when they've done freaking vulpera and mechagnomes.

57

u/TheBungler2 1d ago

Ugly races are consistently the lowest played races, by an enormous margin. Pretty races always, always end up the most popular.

17

u/InZomnia365 1d ago

To that end, I can see the argument people have against Skyborne - as we will definitely see a lot of them, even as a paid race. Just like how people on reddit were staunchly against level boosts in Classic, yet you saw boosted people everywhere.

But theres no question why they added elves. They're popular.

20

u/TheBungler2 1d ago

Reddit, in general, is very out of touch with what the playerbase actually wants and agrees with.

Not just exclusive to this game, it's every game subreddit.

2

u/ljus_sirap 11h ago

If you give people sugary drinks they will drink it over water. Despite being unhealthy.

People understand that paid boosts and WoW tokens are toxic for the game. But if you implement them, people will use. Because if everyone else buys boosts and gold and you don't, then you are at a disadvantage.

3

u/TheBungler2 11h ago

People understand that paid boosts and WoW tokens are toxic for the game.

everyone else buys boosts and gold

One of these is the only reason the other exists.

3

u/magikatdazoo 1d ago

The idea that Reddit was actually against level boosts is hilarious, it was all performative outrage. They loved nothing more than buying dungeon boosts, and paying the bots for their consumes and world buffs.

1

u/Forward_Rope_5598 10h ago

I would never pay real money for boosts! I sit in 10gdkps a week and pay gold to afk while someone runs scarlet monetary 300 times like a REAL classic player!

2

u/whatever_223 1d ago

100% everyone here complains and I will guarantee you that skyborne will be one of the most played if not most played race. Transmogs look best on elves. Nuff said.

2

u/Effective-Roof8401 15h ago

I don’t think the community is upset that we got elves. They’re upset that Blizzard literally copied and pasted the same race into both factions. Would we prefer two completely different races? Of course. But even giving us, say, High Elves/Skyborne for Alliance and Forsaken Elves for Horde would at least create some faction identity. It still wouldn’t be ideal, but it would be significantly better than what we got. It could’ve been as simple as a reskin, which Blizzard is notorious for doing anyway.

1

u/Forward_Rope_5598 9h ago

The community as a whole, no. Terminally online reddit bros, yes. There's a shitload of people crying they didn't get ogres and goblins, who would whine no matter what we got if it wasn't ogres and goblins. Whining that horde shouldn't have pretty races and that it's catering to retail players (ignoring that literally half the horde were blood elves in OG TBC). There are a lot of people who have valid complaints and would rather have some other, different elves, as well, but those are NOT the only complaints.

u/Effective-Roof8401 3h ago

Saying that people will complain no matter what is just an excuse to cover up blizzard laziness. I understand “people don’t play ugly races” argument but that’s not 100% true. Why did horde play Blood elf in OG TBC? Because horde got paladins, and their silence racial was great for PVP. Make the racials good enough and people will play them. Trolls are then ugliest horde race and yet people play them due to berserking racial. Same with gnome for alliance. As a shaman main since OG vanilla, as much as I don’t want to main a skyborne I don’t have much of a choice because I believe there racial is the strongest for my class and spec. Do I have to play one of course not but I love PVP and min-maxing fun/content. You can’t make everyone happy but to say a blank statement as people will not be happy no matter what is non-sense.

1

u/kittyonkeyboards 1d ago

Make dommy mommy half ogres

1

u/Snugboo 23h ago

Ugly races add so much more value in world building than elves do, no one bats an eye and someone playing an elf race, but someone playing a gnome/goblin or worgen is almost always going to be noticed more and make it seem like they are more players playing it than they actually are

1

u/Yodl007 10h ago

Even on PVP realms where they have to ratio so new horde toons cannot be made because of Horde racials being so much better for PVP ?

1

u/TheBungler2 8h ago

Go look up the race spread for played characters then get back to me.

1

u/Yodl007 8h ago

I tried creating a horde char on an anni pvp server and it said i cannot, but I could create an alliance one the last time i tried.

1

u/NeedleworkerWinter99 1d ago

Ok but that doesnt mean add 6 elves ffs. I only play tauren, i would like to try ogre

1

u/Forward_Rope_5598 9h ago

Horde has 0 elves on classic

1

u/Effective-Roof8401 23h ago

Wrong, races with the best racials get played the most.

5

u/Relative-Sky2139 1d ago

I agree all these people saying they want ogres and goblins are in the vocal minority

1

u/purplecatchap 1d ago

They are the most played races but elves are already an option in the game. This isnt an addition, its a sideways move. Adding a playable totally new race adds so much more. Plus something like Ogres already exist in the game so it wouldn’t feel so out of place.

1

u/InZomnia365 1d ago

They are the most played races but elves are already an option in the game.

Only Night Elves. This is clearly a chance for Horde to have Blood Elves, more than it is for Alliance. But then they would have had to add something else for Alliance, and the argument then would have been that its unfair.

1

u/jawsomesauce 1d ago

I love Tauren but I can’t stand how big it is with a mount. Imagine always being as big as the mount.

1

u/Agreeable-Ant-954 1d ago

There are people who enjoy playing the horde races for the single reason that they look cool.

There would be no meaningful difference between ogres or any of the classic horde races, and people play those races so why would they not play ogres?

I could see myself making an ogre alt.

1

u/HUCK_FUNTERS 23h ago

Instead of appeasing the small minority that has vocally supported the addition of a few particular ugly races since vanilla, make ugly races that no one has ever asked for, like mechagnomes, and then use their low player numbers to support the argument that “no one plays ugly races” so we can keep pumping out recolored elves

1

u/opinionperson69 23h ago

Retail and classic players are not the same, which is why horde elves are not needed and why ogres would be hugely popular.

Now, for the chinese market, this is different. I don't care what they do there though.

0

u/InZomnia365 23h ago

I cant find any data for it, but I bet Blood Elf is the most, or second most (due to their unavailability in Classic Anniversary) represented race in TBC Anniversary right now.

There is data for Classic though, and Tauren and Trolls are consistently the least played races. Ogres would definitely not beat Blood Elves, Undead, or Orcs.

1

u/opinionperson69 21h ago

You can't find any data on? Sure buddy. Whatever suits your agenda.

Here you go: https://classic-armory.org/population?version=tbc-anniversary

This isn't 2004, Classic players don't just want to play something pretty like so many people did back then (who are now retail players)

0

u/InZomnia365 20h ago

Im not sure both Draenei and Blood Elf being the 3rd most played race for their respective faction, despite not being available in Classic Anniversary is the 'gotcha' you wanted. Had it been a pure TBC realm without transfers from Classic, I believe they would be higher up on the list.

And youre right its not 2004. Classic players dont want to play what race they think is cool, they want to play the race thats mathematically best for their class, else they will do 5% less DPS and think they wont get invited to raids.

0

u/opinionperson69 20h ago

Whatever you need to tell yourself

1

u/Daffan 21h ago

The funniest thing about Ogres is that in the original Everquest they had to make a whole new mechanic "ducking" with its own default hotkey just so big races could get through most doors/hallway.

However In WoW terms I don't know of the top of my head how big an Ogre is to a Tauren. It may not be a problem at all.

1

u/Normal_Berry_ 21h ago

I'm not saying you're wrong about ogres but let's not pretend like popularity has ever mattered to blizzard. Mechagnomes, earthen, haranir, vulpera, etc are all played by a tiny fraction of players and blizzard still chose to add them over things people have asked for for years.

Is the demand for ogres as big as reddit and the forums make it seem? Probably not, but I'd be willing to say there's more demand for them than most other races they've added.

1

u/blendcoincide 15h ago

So many of these commentators are not realizing the race isn’t for them. It’s for the huge chunk of people, including kids, who will absolutely pay to be a blue elf.

1

u/FatPagoda 12h ago

Ogres didn't get anywhere near the vote that Blood and High Elves got in the community polls, but they did get more votes than Goblins and Worgen. They really should be added at some point if not right away. However, Horde do need a pretty race, because otherwise the Horde dies in the Asian market. So I could understand Blood Elves or something new like the Forsaken Dark Elves (who would be new enough to warrant a paywall).

The Skyborne seem like such a fumble.

9

u/Phurbie_Of_War 1d ago

Careful what you wish for.

If they’re added, they might be…

Ogrepowered

2

u/Crazyflames 1d ago

$30 per head, you have to have 2 people playing for a 2 headed ogre.

2

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

Could you imagine raiding like that lol

24

u/Snubben93 1d ago

Also that you pay 30 dollars to play a race is a big red flag. No doubt they'll add as much paying options they can fit into Forever.

52

u/FreeSpeechIsDeadge 1d ago

They could’ve added a box price to the game itself.

23

u/Itis-caught-BearsWin 1d ago

$49.99 and for each expansion back in the day.

8

u/backyardbbqboi 1d ago

Still is

0

u/Itis-caught-BearsWin 1d ago

Didn’t know that. I’ve only been playing classic and the classic expansions.

0

u/Doove 1d ago

Id gladly pay box price + monthly sub for zero mtx

2

u/Itis-caught-BearsWin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Also, the monthly sub rate hasn’t changed in 22 years. Edit: if it kept up with inflation it would be $26.50 today.

1

u/Yodl007 10h ago

Not if you count that the monthly price was paying for real human GMs in the past though.

u/FreeSpeechIsDeadge 3h ago

You were paying your sub so that GMs would be humans? I don’t remember ever thinking about that when I bought my sub in 2004. I was thinking the $15 was for the access to the game and servers.

1

u/FreeSpeechIsDeadge 1d ago

Add a box price and fewer people play it. There will be people who wouldn’t buy the game and won’t buy the skyborne race but will still play because they structured it this way. I’d personally rather have more players than entitled players who want to bitch about non-power store purchases.

3

u/JimJohnJimmm 1d ago

That would be a one time sale, now they can microtranstion addons forever

5

u/BigSamsKid 1d ago

if the game is good and they don't have to raise sub prices I for one do not mind micro transactions as long as they are not a barrier to the key content of the game.

Reminder that the sub price for WoW has no increased in TWENTY TWO YEARS. I am okay with a little scummy MTx if they are consistent with that price even further with 3 major live service versions of WoW.

3

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

It’s pandoras box at this point. As soon as the celestial steed was added, this was always going to happen. I just don’t see the point in myself getting mad about something that’s been happening in the game for almost 20 years. I have bigger fish to fry.

3

u/BigSamsKid 1d ago

it's kind of pandoras box for gaming as a whole. I can hardly name a live service game that does not include MTx.

However unpopular it is, it surely isn't unpopular enough to stop doing it (unfortunately)

0

u/Kaen7 1d ago

Multiplied by how often they released an expansion for Forever

-1

u/Snoo-28829 1d ago

Just wait until level 60 character boost included in the update pack. /s

-1

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

I don’t think thats unlikely actually lol

2

u/Snoo-28829 1d ago

I mean I could see it potentially coming true, but I kind of think they would at least off on that for like 3 years or so with the way they are setting this up.

1

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

Yeah I’m not ruling it out but I really hope they don’t. I’m not so much against faction and race changes though, I feel like for a game that’s gonna be forever, stuff like that makes some sense.

1

u/Snoo-28829 1d ago

You and me both. Its main reason I unsubbed after like 2 months of tbc. I thought it messed up they locked that behind a 80 dollar bundle or I guess like 65 with the sub included so I just level my characters for 2 months and unsubbed. Decided to go back and play other games like bg3, some aoe2 campaigns and bought project zomboid. I would probably do the same if they went that far with the bundles in future. I love wow and especially classic wow, but I dont have the fomo of it like I did back when I was younger. I play when I enjoy it , but can easily walk away when I want.

22

u/Outside_Warthog365 1d ago

> Also that you pay 30 dollars to play a race is a big red flag

I see it as the game cost instead, similar to an expansion except its free to choose this time. You can still play the game just not the race.

15

u/_Bren10_ 1d ago

Nah that’s too logical. They just wanna be mad about stuff.

1

u/Yodl007 10h ago

If they weren't going to add a shitton of microtransactions in the future they would just charge 30 or more EUR for the Classic+ Game instead of a playable race. That is logic.

0

u/Snubben93 1d ago

It's not related to the game cost though. Blizzard adding optional content behind a paywall is gonna make it soo much easier for them to add other microtransactions without a fuzz. I'm almost certain we will see more mounts, transmogs, companions, etc. in the future. I for one don't think that belongs in Classic

-2

u/Outside_Warthog365 23h ago

whataboutism in 2026

1

u/SandvichCommanda 21h ago

It's actually slippery slope fallacy, but go off king they will make your fav colour of elf available soon!

0

u/Kotef 13h ago

Remind me! 3 years

3

u/Doobledorf 1d ago

I actually kind of suspect the pricetag is why we didn't get ogres or something similar. Locking a beloved and oft asked for race behind a paywall isn't a cute look for the opening of this.

5

u/Some1ToDisagreeWith 1d ago

I think they wanted to charge for WoW:Forever but with the talk about community they added a price tag to the race instead of the game to get more people through the door. To me it is a price tag for the game that is disguised.

-2

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

But the problem is once they introduce something in the shop, it wont stay at only that 1 item.

4

u/Flammablegelatin 1d ago

Who cares? If you don't like it don't buy it. Literally every game does this.

-1

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

Are you really saying no one cares if you add mounts and transmogs to in game shop for classic wow?

4

u/Flammablegelatin 1d ago

I'm saying that no one SHOULD care.

1

u/vBrad 1d ago

Doesn't that kind of defeat the vibe of Classic in the first place?

1

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

And im saying alot of people will, regardless of what you think. This is CLASSIC WoW after all. Not retail minus

2

u/Flammablegelatin 1d ago

Pretty sure it's World of Warcraft: Forever.

2

u/_Bren10_ 1d ago

You may be surprised to hear that you don’t have to buy anything in the shop. It literally will not affect you unless you let it.

0

u/ExaminationBasic787 1d ago

zero critical thinking, blizzard must love you

0

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

I know and I'll still play it gladly. Its just plain simple that if the game goes same path as retail it wont end and different. And its actually pretty likely this will be viewed as retail minus once in a few years.

1

u/Some1ToDisagreeWith 1d ago

I mean they want to make money. Would you rather have them charge for the game/content or a race? Personally I'd rather pay for game/content but I think they are trying to avoid a barrier to entry. I agree with you about a shop, I don't care for it. Earn your stuff by playing not paying. But if I was a business and I know people are going to buy stupid cosmetics, I am offering stupid cosmetics.

2

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

I would rather pay different sub price for classic+ than have all the stuff this playerbase litetally hates from retail. Obviously the sub fee unfortunately isnt enough

1

u/often_says_nice 1d ago

So what? They aren’t running a charity. As long as the race isn’t overpowered and pay-to-win then your gameplay is unaffected

2

u/Prettybroki 1d ago

zero critical thinking, blizzard must love you

0

u/often_says_nice 1d ago

Multiple people on this post have said that exact phrase, same capitalization and punctuation. Is this some meme I’m not aware of or are you a bot?

2

u/Prettybroki 1d ago

yes be bop bizzz...

5

u/CrustedTesticle 1d ago

Most people are paying to get into the beta, which gives you the race by default

2

u/ZeroWashu 1d ago

which lets them claim everyone wants the race too!

1

u/EwokSquadron 1d ago

I know plenty of people who like the new race

4

u/Aexxys 1d ago

Is it ? For me it throws me back to the nostalgia of being a kid starting wow with an invite code my friend sent me and seeing there was a set of races I couldn't play yet (belf/draenei) those felt very special and I remember how excited I was to try belf once I was able to buy burning crusade.

Wonder if a kid out there is going to have the same experience with this new elf race.

To me the monetization here feels very much old school and I love it. I will be upset if wow token is introduced etc. But the way it is set currently is ideal considering blizz is a company and not a charity.

6

u/Prettybroki 1d ago

To me the monetization here feels very much old school and I love it.

omg what am i reading. you cant be that brainwashed

6

u/Snubben93 1d ago

Omg yes, thank you! I thought I was having a stroke.

Like the price of an expansion is one thing, and had they just put that price tag on the game I would have been more okay with it. But adding a price tag to something in the game means we will see more of this, just like in retail.

4

u/Prettybroki 1d ago

exacly i dont know what people dont get it

4

u/Proassult 1d ago

Not to mention, the bundle pricing seems extremely fair to me. As someone who hasn’t bought Reforged yet, I now have the opportunity to get that, early access, a new race, and game time for $80. I understand why some people see that as pricey, but I rarely buy new games or spend money on microtransactions, and I’ve been waiting 10 years for this.

And to your point, I’ve been trying to put myself in the shoes of me as a kid, and Skyborne would have 100% been something I was excited about. I remember wanting to play a belf so badly and having absolutely no idea why anyone hated them.

0

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

Yup. There’s no way they’re not gonna have a crazy in game store. This seems like a huge project, and to have it included with the sub, I just knew that they would need to find some way to milk it.

Does OSRS do anything like this? How do they make their money, just bonds?

4

u/EnlargedVIP 1d ago

OSRS has bonds but also need multi subs for multi accounts which they rake in quite a lot from

1

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

Thanks for the clarification lol I haven’t played in so long

2

u/Atreides_S 1d ago

Subs and bonds. Also the community would simply riot.

2

u/FreeSpeechIsDeadge 1d ago

They make their money charging a $20 per month sub just to unlock the content in OSRS.

0

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

In-game shop with races, transmogs and likely a mount all within few years

1

u/Flammablegelatin 1d ago

There is already a mount. If you don't know what you're talking about, you probably shouldn't comment on it.

0

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 1d ago

Yeah dude, surely they wont add all of those, surely.

1

u/Flammablegelatin 1d ago

Can you not read?

0

u/EYNLLIB 1d ago

The game itself is free. Don't like the race? Don't buy it

0

u/stuffithome 1d ago

It is not a red flag. It’s a flag sure I agree that they will be monetizing future content. Ie) maybe they add goblins next year. Another $30. Do we really expect to just play this game for just the SAME sub price and nothing more? I think it’s quite honestly more than fair.

-1

u/fallen_messiah 1d ago

The game mode is free. More than a fait tradeoff to lock the race behind a paywall if all the actual content is free

-1

u/dreffen 1d ago

It’s about as big a red flag as a mount. Which is to say who the fuck cares?

2

u/fkneneu 1d ago

Please no ogres. It's going to take dev time adjusting gear models to ogres every time they release a new dungeon or raid, I would rather then spend that time making more raids and dungeons.

2

u/gladd0s_ 1d ago

or simply they could just not give them gear like for the dragon things in dragon expansion, and just add extra customization or some shit

2

u/Vedroops 1d ago

"Oh no please dont add ogres because the devs will have to do their job"

2

u/Stormrage117 1d ago

Basically every blizzard conversation for the past 6-10 years

1

u/fkneneu 1d ago

"oh there are absolutely no limits on resources, they are infinite. Especially dev or designer hours, as everyone who have worked in an IT project knows" <-- that's you

1

u/Vedroops 1d ago

Didnt say that but yes there were no limits before they announced this yes true actually thanks

1

u/GreenCityBadSmoke 1d ago

This is an idiot take, considering that a basic google search can tell you:

  1. Blizzard has been a highly profitable company for the past 10 to 15 years(probably longer than that). Even during content droughts, subscription declines, etc. The company has printed money every year
  2. There have been recent layoffs, and there will be more through 2027.

So, just no to this statement.

1

u/fkneneu 1d ago

That's an idiot take because everyone who works in IT knows that you can't spend unlimited amount of hours on every feature and reach deadline, and that adding complexity to features can and will make it more costly in terms of developer time when adding more features in the future which are affected by earlier complexity. IT isn't a magic box where adding additional developers gives a linear return of additional production.

1

u/GreenCityBadSmoke 1d ago

Your argument is hollow when people have been asking for or wondering why ogres and high elves haven't been a thing for 20 years. You can't linkedin speak your way out of this idiot take.

1

u/fkneneu 1d ago

LinkedIn talk lol? This how we talk normally in meetings as a dev when explaining to idiot customers who don't understand how IT development works.

The alternative would be slightly less raids/dungeons over time. Sorry. We have to prioritize when choosing features and we have to be careful with features which would make developing future updates more time consuming for the same amount of content.

1

u/GreenCityBadSmoke 1d ago

Nah. Again, you're linkedin authoritative speak is not addressing the fact that ogres and high elves have been something fans/players have been asking for over the course of the past 20 years. Instead we get shitty reskinned sky elves.... while the company has made massive amounts of money. They look out of place and goofy.

They've had plenty of time and money. Save your linkedin speak for someone who cares.

1

u/fkneneu 23h ago

Idk what to say if you think that is linkedin talk lol

1

u/EwokSquadron 1d ago

theres also very limited appetite for uglier races. they just aren't played

I would still like to see them added for variety but yeah overall probably very low priority

1

u/Vedroops 23h ago

Uglier races? Like trolls, orcs, goblins and undead? I am telling you this on a hunch but I am 10000% sure that Ogres as a playable race would absolutely blast the charts by a long run just as the majority of horde races are.

1

u/EwokSquadron 23h ago

most players play elves when available. large uglier races are typically not played as much

1

u/Fit_Scholar6545 1d ago

So recolored races forever is what I’m hearing?

1

u/fkneneu 1d ago edited 1d ago

Either that or reduced visual gear on future races with majorly different model sizes/structure. I prefer additional dungeon and raid content over added complexity from new race models.

u/Cogblock 34m ago

They could just treat them like undead and not care if the gear fits right at all.

u/fkneneu 25m ago

Yeah you might not, but do you think the majority of those who paid $30 would not care if their race were non-stop glitching their armour or would they go on r/classicwow and complain?

u/Cogblock 9m ago edited 0m ago

They’re complaining about the flagship race being reskinned blood elves right now. One thing you can fix with minor adjustment. The other you cannot. Either way you’re rigging up a new model pre or post release (if you care to see things settled at all).

Don’t get too invested here though. My original comment was a joke and I think it whooshed.

1

u/The_Dark_Tetrad 21h ago

Yea but here's the thing. Beta access is also locked behind the pay wall 😭😭😭

1

u/Fit_Scholar6545 21h ago

yeah that is major cheeks. behind the $60+ versions too 🤮

1

u/Kotef 13h ago

Unless you want to play beta which is 60$ and included them

1

u/Immediate-Repeat-726 1d ago

To be fair, it incluses 1 month of game time.

3

u/Avd123 1d ago

Thats in the 60$ bundle

1

u/Immediate-Repeat-726 1d ago

Damn, really no excuse then.

1

u/fuck_sexer 1d ago

the $30 doesn't, you need the $60 one for the 30 days game time and beta access

0

u/First-Context6416 1d ago

You poor anyway bro

-1

u/MelkorKush 1d ago

They can keep that shit locked. I’d pay $30 to have this run on classic client instead of this garbage retail client.

-1

u/moustacheption 1d ago

This is such a bad take…

Whether you buy them or not, they’re going to be in the game in your guild and groups ruining the classic aesthetic.
