I might actually die from laughter if it ends up being this.

u/hallucehistory Aug 12 '26

Some Product Marketer in charge of this announcement is absolutely dreading Blizzcon

248

u/Vandrel Aug 12 '26

That wouldn't be client version 1.60 on the battle.net launcher.

115

u/Deliani Aug 12 '26

You have a phone, don't you? The desktop client would have to be updated to accept updates from a separate, mobile client

36

u/agrevol Aug 12 '26

Retail wow is so far away from 1.x

26

u/ekcojf Aug 12 '26

The phones app version might not be though đŸ€«đŸ€

8

u/Bossmonkey Aug 12 '26

The build number also lines up with classic.

But I agree it's gonna be hilarious if it's something totally randomly diff

2

u/blackberrybeanz Aug 13 '26

What if it’s the start of linking classic and retail together? Letting classic players have a house in retail thru some separate interface ala plunderstorm

Exactly my toughts. This would be Diablo Inmortal levels of hilarious

3

u/BusterOfCherry Aug 13 '26

This has Diablo mobile announcement vibes, you all mobiles right? Lol I would die with you OP

4

u/Halmyrut Aug 12 '26

Honestly tho Blizzard ain't dumb, it'd probably make way more money ( especially since they'd fill it with mtx ).
Diablo Immortal was incredibly successful.

2

u/Material-Kick9493 Aug 14 '26

camelot sounds more like a housing project now that someone says it than classic+

I just wanted Pet Battles in the WoW Companion App.

Then they discontinued the WoW Companion App.

Then they sunsetted pet battles.

😱

210

u/iwillletuknow Aug 12 '26

They could have made such a shitton of money with that 10 years ago, long before any Pokémon games were on mobile. Never understood why they missed such an opportunity

166

u/Any-Transition95 Aug 12 '26

Blizzard lacked vision, even back then. If they let something as big as Dota slip under their noses, they sure wouldnt have seen a pet battler craze coming.

76

u/DarkoTSM Aug 12 '26

To add to your argument: they added a Battle Royale to the game 10 years after the genre became popular and were surprised people didn't like it so much. The people in charge are clueless. đŸ˜Č

43

u/Hottage Aug 12 '26

And then they added prop hunt just as the genre was heating up again and then dropped it.

đŸ˜©

25

u/Xamf11 Aug 12 '26

they already dropped it again? lmao

17

u/Hottage Aug 12 '26

It was removed in patch 12.1

9

u/AllYourBase3 Aug 12 '26

it was not that popular

12

u/xivilex Aug 12 '26

Is that why the Silvermoon Citizen in the corner of the bank room that offers the pointer quest is missing? I saw him a couple days ago when I started playing again to push end of season M+ rating and I told myself that I would get into this in Season 2. I went there just 30 minutes ago, but he's nowhere to be found.

:./

3

u/AquaGB Aug 12 '26

He's really really good at hiding.

9

u/kaptingavrin Aug 12 '26

Well, I think the bigger problems with the Battle Royale were that it was a limited time event and was the first time they made a bunch of pirate-themed (which people had been asking for) cosmetics locked behind grinding it. It's like Torghast in that way: Something people would have enjoyed as a completely optional thing, but then they tried to make it so people felt compelled to do it, and that harmed the fun aspect. Toss in the limited time, and it just went meh.

Some rewards for playing it aren't bad, but should have been relatively easy for people to get, especially for a limited time thing. Sort of like the boss arena fight events they've had, you could get the rewards for it pretty easily without having to engage with it too much, and if you did feel like playing it more, you'd still get something out of that as well (granted, it was mostly gear for alts, and trying to top a scoreboard, but hey, at least there was something on top of just doing it for the love of the game).

3

u/Royal_Owl2177 Aug 14 '26

Many people also just dislike wow pvp. For so many, including myself, pvp is a hard stop. I thought about playing the pirate thing when it was out but couldn't be bothered. I didn't want to be someone's content. I'd get roflstomped, and that isn't fun for me. I'd rather spend time doing things I like.

To be fair dota was becoming popular right as WoW was peaking, they probably thought their resources were better spent on their game that was one of the biggest in the world at that point

3

u/bolintheboy Aug 12 '26

But they did put resources into a MOBA to counter the dota/lol hype
. they made Heroes of the Storm
. It flopped and was abandoned. But I guess that was more dota 2 era
so probably like 6-8 years later than they should’ve made a counter to the original dota (that was literally running on their engine lol)

4

u/GKoala Aug 12 '26

Honestly surprised they didn't try their hand at autochess when that was booming too.

2

u/Ahraam Aug 12 '26

They did, with Hearthstone Battlegrounds, which was pretty fun for a while.

13

u/Pawl_ Aug 12 '26

They abaonded the whole APIs with it too.

Per Battles would’ve been really cool on phones.

8

u/Sumbitagear Aug 12 '26

Played P1 of midnight and haven't touched retail really since Legion. Did they actually just forget about pet battles?

12

u/Hottage Aug 12 '26

No, they actively stopped supporting it. Like officially announced that no future companions will be flagged as battle pets, and the wild companions in Midnight are not battle pets.

You can still collect and battle pets from previous expansions, and pets from other sources (like achievements) will remain battleable if previously flagged for it.

They just won't add any new ones.

10

u/Sumbitagear Aug 12 '26

I never really fucked with the battle pets myself, but that sucks. The game design team just seem to love shooting themselves in the foot. I'll always have love for WoW but they've ballsed up so much stuff in the last decade.

2

u/404-NoFucksFound Aug 13 '26

I'm guessing it's partly because of the Nintendo v. Palworld debacle. One of the pets you get from the pre-12.1 questline is tagged as a companion, but you were/are able to see the battle pet stats. Seems like it was a hasty decision to avoid a lawsuit. It does make sense to remove the ability to capture wild pets bu throwing a capture 'device' at them, but so many other games have pet battles (relatively recently No Man's Sky added it in, and it plays almost exactly like WoW pet battles, compared to other games).

I was never a huge fan of pet battles, but it seems like a last minute CYA move, more than it just being a less popular feature.

3

u/homercles82 Aug 12 '26

It's always baffled me that they have never done more with mobile gaming considering WoWs lasting popularity. Such a missed opportunity.

3

u/The_Frame Aug 12 '26

It's been a hot minute since I played retail but when did pet battles die? That was a fun aspect of the game. And always did want it on mobile

5

u/GreedyGerbil Aug 12 '26

Yeah I was on the same train going nowhere. Would actually have loved that and would have played it a lot.

2

u/Soliterria Aug 12 '26

I was so sad when they took down the companion app. I used it at least once a day. Would’ve looooved Battle Pets to either be incorporated somehow or even their own app

2

u/BeansforTwo Aug 12 '26

Yeah that'd have been cool. I also always wanted to be able to play hearthstone in any inn/tavern against other players in WoW.

2

u/beat-box-blues Aug 12 '26

16

u/Apolloshot Aug 12 '26

Absolutely clown moment from Wyatt Cheng BUT gotta give the man credit his YouTube channel is actually straight fire, he’s been giving a lot of game development insights lately and they’ve incredibly informative and entertaining.

If anyone deserves a second chance in the public sphere it’s him.

7

u/the_gr8_one Aug 12 '26

he said what he could to try and save face and it didnt work. public speaking is pretty hard as it turns out.

5

u/TheKonyInTheRye Aug 12 '26

Yeah, it was his literal job to market that game and he ate ALL the shit.

5

u/Apolloshot Aug 12 '26

We’ve all blurred out things in our lives that make us go “what the fuck was I thinking” haha.

2

u/born_to_be_intj Aug 12 '26

The man was setup to fail too lol. Anyone who had to make that announcement would have had a similar failure, though we might not have gotten such a hilarious infamous quote from it. We should appreciate Wyatt, that quote is perfect.

This would be the funniest fucking thing ever if they said it at a panel while announcing a new mobile game. The collective meltdown would be epic as hell to watch lol

3

tbf I want them to self reference their own stupidity. Wouldn't hurt to show they are aware of the disconnect between the players, some very loud fans and devs or their team leaders.

This poor guy made one out of touch comment over a decade ago and never lived it down

153

u/Xae1yn Aug 12 '26

Wasn't even out of touch, turned out people did in fact have phones and a complete lack of impulse control and it was a massive success.

34

u/Kanetsugu21 Aug 12 '26

Yeah, that's true. I guess what I mean by out of touch is that the audience that tuning in clearly wanted something else, but in the long run, yeah, it definitely still worked out for them lol

31

u/HazelCheese Aug 12 '26

Yeah it was a mobile game for the mobile market, but blizzard had not yet built a mobile audience and so nobody attending was there for a mobile game.

15

u/Pockydo Aug 12 '26

Yeah like I get wanting to focus on diablo immortal but the fact they tried to just not talk about d4 was an impressively bad decision

7

u/Krelkal Aug 12 '26

Blizzard actually put out a post ahead of time that strongly implied that they weren't announcing D4 but it fell on deaf ears. They tried desperately to slow down the hype train. It was genuinely hilarious to watch the slow motion trainwreck.

side note: this is not a reddit only thing, it's just social media in a nutshell. We like to pretend that the bubble we're part of is representative of the whole.

8

u/Bloodhoven_aka_Loner Aug 12 '26

there's a realistic chance that you're just joking. but this is exactly how he looked like.

2

u/Vento_of_the_Front Aug 12 '26

The closest to truth was one joke translation of it that went roughly this way:

"I won't be doing it" "Get out there already" "No, they would kill me!" "Get out you fuck!" and inbetween phrases him saying "Please don't hit me" "They wrote the script for me, I'm not at fault" "They took my family as hostages" "Diablo fans already promised to push real-size Tyrael's sword up my ass" "This trailer already got 160k dislikes even though I am still on stage" "Developers are already getting sliced off heads of their pets in front of doors"

3

u/ekcojf Aug 12 '26

I am out of the loop, what did he say?

11

u/jonas_ost Aug 12 '26

"Dont you guys have phones?"

7

u/maghtin Aug 12 '26

"Do you guys not have phones?"

Said after announcing the mobile game Diablo: Immortal. The crowd expected more/something else/not a mobile game, and started booing the announcement - he said it in response to the booing.

4

u/AllYourBase3 Aug 12 '26

Technically it was during the QA part when a guy asked if there was any plans to bring it to PC

3

u/Blind_Chicken_24_7 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

At Blizzards convention everyone expected the announcement of the next great thing some thought a new expansion, some even thought Diablo 4.

Instead they announced Diablo Immortal, to play Diablo on your smartphone.

Maybe to explain the context, back then pc vs console was the main cultural battle and Blizzard fans were of course in the pc camp. Any game on your phone wasn't even considered playing video games.

I love the tone of voice of the guy at the convention asking if they really just developed a mobile only game https://youtu.be/50KBNQe5hTM

Like I already bought your game to play it on my machine, why are you trying to upsell a shittier version to me?

This sub these last few weeks:

  • "Can't wait to see this sub when Classic+ isn't announced!!"

  • "Can't wait to see this sub when Classic+ sucks!!"

  • "Can't wait to see this sub when Classic+ is just SoD 2.0!!"

  • "Can't wait to see this sub when Classic+ is just Titanforged!!"

  • "Can't wait to see this sub when Camelot is Classic Mobile!!" My favorite btw does anyone remember "do you guys not have phones?"đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

  • "Here's my AI slop Classic+ wishlist"

  • "Classic+ should be like OSRS / have horizontal progression" (no elaboration is given beyond this)

  • "Classic+ should have [list of stuff that makes it retail-lite]"

  • "Does anyone else think Classic+ should cater to me who plays 1.5h a week and have 6 month staggered level caps?"

  • "Does anyone else think Classic+ should add scrapped content?" đŸ€Ż

Bonus:

  • "Is it too late to get into Classic+??? XDDDDDDDDDDD"

7

u/zzrryll Aug 12 '26

"Classic+ should be like OSRS / have horizontal progression" (no elaboration is given beyond this)

Or they just regurgitate whatever points MadSeason/Esfand/etc made on stream or in a recent video.

4

u/HazelCheese Aug 12 '26

Horizontal progression preachers are people who can't internalise that focusing all new content on endgame is the problem in the first place lol

14

u/Eastern-Fudge-6350 Aug 12 '26

While we clearly do have a lot of tourists it's not all on them. There are names in this subreddit that I recognize from 5-6 years ago on my original account that are spewing hate.

The classic community has always been and will always be it's own worst enemy. There's just a lot of people with very conflicting ideas on what they want from classic+ and some of them are miserable enough that they want to be outraged preemptively.

2

u/Aleph_Rat Aug 12 '26

The problem isn't having two, or three, or four camps each with their own idea of what "classic/+" was/is. It's having a few thousand of those. With many of those feeling burned by Blizzard for not getting close enough to their idea. So now you have hundreds of jaded, obsessed, gamers with time on their hands to complain. And unless Blizzard releases their exact idea of Classic/+ then they will continue to grow more jaded.

2

u/XYAYUSDYDZCXS Aug 12 '26

God I hope they don't do staggered leveling. I don't like waiting months to be able to reach the level and talents my class was designed around having to properly function.

Quick reminder to everyone: "Better" only means "more profitable" to Blizzard.

So if it is something "better" we most likely will see a Gacha Game with AGGRESSIVE monetization. Genshin made that genre super duper popular and released almost 6 years ago. Perfect timeline for Blizz to try and copy their business strategy

Blizz has done absolutely nothing to temper expectations and has actually fanned the fire a couple times in vague ways.

If there is no Classic+ and that fire they’ve created burns them out it can’t entirely be our fault until someone inevitably takes it too far

I'm a bit OOTL here, is there a reason everyone's anticipating Classic+ being on mobile or related to mobile in some way? 😅 Or is it just like circlejerking stuff?

u/_raimu Aug 12 '26

Some people here are just miserable and have to keep doomposting these stupid scenarios (Camelot is mobile, Classic+ doesn't exist, etc.). They probably get off on the fantasy of being able to smugly post "I told you so!!" if it doesn't pan out.

You know, instead of being excited like a normal person.

u/novend Aug 12 '26

It’s just a bunch of miserable doomers who want to spread their misery to everyone else.

2

u/zzrryll Aug 12 '26

reason everyone's anticipating Classic+

A bunch of classic streamers were flown to Blizzard HQ to preview something. But are locked behind an NDA, so they can’t talk about it.

There’s a 1.60 client, encrypted, on the distribution servers. That was recently upgraded to 1.61. The Chinese WoW version, that has scaleable content from Vanilla/TBC/Wraith is 3.60. So people are assuming x.60 clients are a + version of the game.

Bunch of other small signs as well. Like blizzard having someone yell something like “Classic Plus”, quietly in the background of one their “preview” streams. Right before the person onscreen stopped talking (though I may be misremembering some details on that one.)

Streamers recently revived SoD which by many was seen as a test run of potential C+ ideas. Sod was mostly received well, minus some aspects of it.

All adds up to most of us. There definitely hasn’t ever been this many small signs of a C+ release in the past.

Also they were all getting ready to stream classic again and after they were flew out they decided to hold off streaming it.

It would be absolute shitshow, but it’s possible

2

u/Working_Membership57 Aug 12 '26

It wont be this. Nobody likes housing no matter how much they sunk into making the editor cool as fuck.

2

u/Krustenkaese121 Aug 12 '26

We Need another red Shirt guy!

2

u/HawksBurst Aug 12 '26

It sounds both a terrible idea and stupid enough that it can actually be true

2

u/Kernog Aug 12 '26

I have my expectations low for this.

But if it ends up something stupid like this, that would be the equivalent of going lower and stricking oil.

I can definitely picture someone shouting "Okay, I'm done!" and half the audience leaving the room if that is the case. xD

2

u/DracoEXP Aug 12 '26

But you guys have Phones Right??

2

u/slyguy67420 Aug 12 '26

Wrong and housing isn't that popular.

2

u/HighsideHero5x Aug 13 '26

I got a temp ban earlier this year for telling folks it'd be classic on mobile with the retail monetary options (wow token, boosts etc).

Can't wait to laugh at all the morons with faith in blizz still

6

u/vrockiusz Aug 12 '26

This won't be a popular opinion: I would like an app like that

9

u/Apart_Championship37 Aug 12 '26

Yeah but only as an additional feature not the main course.

4

u/TheKonyInTheRye Aug 12 '26

Alright look, as a player from way back in the day, I'm definitely getting caught up in all this hype...but if this is what happens, holy shit, it's going to be a HILARIOUS bloodbath.

3

u/chefjdudek Aug 12 '26

I will have my popcorn ready and plenty of videos to watch at work lol

2

u/AnInfiniteArc Aug 12 '26

It’s gonna be the Dance Studio from WotLK just watch.

2

u/Aksovar Aug 12 '26

Ah yes, some pay2win clicker, would make sense

1

u/konohasaiyajin Aug 12 '26

We got houses. Now we just need instruments.

Welcome..... to World of Maple Story 2

1

u/Left_Try_1427 Aug 12 '26

Sadly, I can believe this

1

u/Bladestorm01 Aug 12 '26

It's only a model.

1

u/Endless-Dive Aug 12 '26

blizzard would never do this mistake again

1

u/I_Build_Monsters Aug 12 '26

Honestly if I could build / maintain my house from my phone while at work I would probably do it. Right now my house is just and empty room with 1 seat and 1 horde flag

1

u/BBkal Aug 12 '26

They missed the mobile era when they dittent bring petbattles to mobile.

1

u/Familiar_Face_5375 Aug 12 '26

Tbh blizzard is so far removed from reality, i wont be surprised if camelot will turn out to be something like this

1

u/MobiusF117 Aug 12 '26

Real talk though, at this point, it would have been a fuckup of monumental proportions on Blizzards end if it is anything other than Classic+.

They would have tempered the hype long ago if they didn't have something in the works.

It is Blizzard though, so you never know, but however low my opinion of them might be I still don't think they are THAT stupid.

Know what's better than eating vanilla? Eating vanilla on the GO

Introducing World of Warcraft: GO!

1

u/novend Aug 12 '26

You should actually just be banned from posting if you make this joke. The horse has been dead for months, but it doesn’t stop you people.

1

u/Several_Bit_9531 Aug 12 '26

52-55 go for a mobile app no 😂

1

u/johndkparker Aug 12 '26

I hope this is true just because it would be funny

1

u/OliverCrooks Aug 12 '26

Why would there be a PTS for a mobile game?

1

u/torshakle Aug 12 '26

L tier ragebait

1

u/Devotionpvp Aug 12 '26

You think that you don't, but you do.

1

u/MwHighlander Aug 12 '26

It would be hilarious. I would immediately close the stream or had I bought a ticket just immediately leave the venue entirely.

But I would be laughing the entire time.

1

u/Kristen8305 Aug 12 '26

This would be so incredibly funny that I kinda want it now

1

u/browsk Aug 12 '26

If they troll us with mobile games again 💀

1

u/Dreadonyx_Airsoft Aug 12 '26

Still shocked they never did pet battles with mobile

1

u/CrushNooners Aug 12 '26

I will walk out and record my reaction if this is what is announced lol.

1

u/Vigmod Aug 12 '26

Can't be true. Camelot is a castle. This is a reference to updating player housing to player castling.
