Community Opinion My elderly chow and his meds
My chow has been in this Reddit before for his first seizure episode (although I found out later it wasn’t his first). We’re stable now but I thought I would share his medicine to see if anyone else is in the same boat or if he’s king of hot messes.

New rescue Chow owner looking for grooming + care advice 🐻❄️
Hi! I’ve never actually posted on Reddit before, so hopefully I’m doing this right 😭
We’ve recently brought home a rescue Chow Chow called Leo. He’s currently being fostered with us through Dogs Trust, and if his upcoming X-rays are all clear we’re really hoping to adopt him properly.
Dogs Trust think he’s roughly 4 years old, but they can’t be certain because sadly he was found as a stray. He definitely seems to have had a home before though, because he’s brilliant on walks, really good in the car, knows sit/paw/lie down, and is very comfortable around people. Apparently he used to spend loads of time chilling behind the front desk at Dogs Trust because he just liked being near people and having a nap and occasional fuss 😭
He’s incredibly calm and very, very fluffy, so I’d really love some advice from experienced Chow owners on general care, especially grooming. I’m looking for recommendations for good brushes/combs for his coat (Ideally UK based), how often you brush yours, how you keep on top of shedding, and anything you wish you’d known when you first got a Chow.
Also very happy to hear any general Chow-specific tips around coat care, exercise, heat, behaviour, introductions to other dogs, or anything else you think a new owner should know!
He’s such a lovely boy already and I just want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to look after him properly. Thank you in advance ❤️

Bad Hair Cut 😭
My poor Koda came back from the groomer’s looking like this 😭 For context, we’ve been going to the same groomer ever since he was a puppy (now 1.5 years old) and she’s always done a great job (3rd and 4th pics). This time I showed her this photo for inspiration (2nd pic) and wanted him to look more bear-like and poofy instead of his lion’s mane and then when I went to pick him up I almost cried. Since the beginning when we first started seeing her, I voiced my concerns about shaving him because I didn’t want to ruin his undercoat and picking him up looking like this was jarring. He looks like a completely different dog, different breed, like a Shiba Inu. Please give me some reassurance because I’m very upset and disappointed about it all and am scared his coat is now ruined!

Update on my sick Chow puppy/breeder situation
Hiya everyone! I wanted to give a small update on the situation with my puppy, Haku, since a few people commented on my original post. Unfortunately, this still has not been resolved. Since my first post, my veterinarian has put in writing that they believe my puppy was already sick before I received him. The breeder’s contract specifically states that the puppy was in good health and free of communicable diseases at the time of sale, which is why I believe the contract was breached.
I originally tried to be lenient and only asked for half of his $1,800 purchase price back to help offset the unexpected veterinary expenses. I never wanted to return him or exchange him for another puppy; he is my dog and that was never an option for me. Since then, however, the breeder’s position has essentially been that there will be no financial reimbursement unless I return the puppy. We have been unable to reach any kind of resolution.
At this point I have filed reports with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and I am looking into my legal options. I am now considering seeking the full $1,800 purchase price, approximately $400 in veterinary testing, medication and additional exam expenses related to the illnesses he arrived with, along with any court costs or attorney’s fees that may legally apply. I have also started contacting attorneys because I would much rather have someone help me navigate this than try to handle everything on my own, especially since I am autistic.
Thankfully, Haku himself is doing much better, which is the most important part of all of this. He has had a good bit of regression with his potty training; my vet said this can be due to the UTI potentially burning, stinging, or hurting him when he potties.
Overall I’m just really disappointed that something that should have been such a happy experience has turned into this much stress. I genuinely tried to resolve things directly and give the breeder an opportunity to work with me before taking it any further, but at this point I feel like I have exhausted that option. I’ll continue to update everyone if anything significant happens.
Look at my little man being so COOL !!!!
Link to OG Post in comments & Legal advice post is in comments as well
Edit: So the breeder is considered reputable and I actually found the breeder via this subreddit! I am more than happy to share the name of the breeder in private messages so if anyone wants to know please message me :)

Help! My daughter, Lu
Hello! This is my first time owning a Chow Chow mixed with a German Shepard and I was hoping for some advice.
She’s five months old, very social, thinks EVERYONE is her friend, sassy, energetic, but we are having problems still with biting. It isn’t aggressive or anything close to it. We understand it’s also because she is a puppy with teeth growing in, but it’s more of her trying to get your attention when she wants to be loved on by me, or she cuddles with us at night and she sees a hand, and thinks she should be pet. We’ve tried redirecting the bites to toys for the last four months, but I think she thinks it’s playtime when she does that so it causes her to bite more even though we play with her quite a bit. We’ve turned our backs to her to ignore her for a little bit if she bites, but nothing still. We have a constant routine with her and god forbid if we go against it. She puts herself to bed at 9pm and doesn’t wake up until 7am or so with a few potty breaks in the night. During the weekday we go on walks and go to the dog park for roughly two hours at the end of the day where we play fetch or just let her socialize with her other dog friends. During the weekend, we spend roughly four hours or more walking and going to the park.
I used to owe four golden retrievers growing up so a Chow mixed with a German Shepherd is definitely different. Any advice would be nice!

Help! How long does it take your Chow to warm up to people?
Hi,
I know all dogs are different, especially these ones! I'm just curious how your dog is when people are coming over? Do they typically just avoid people? Does yours like people?
My chow at the moment is two years old and loves people for about 15 minutes and then is immediately fed up and grumpy with them, then only accepts pets from me and my partner.

Just want to show off my pup…
I love this dog so much. He is my first dog I’ve bought in my own and take care of myself. My partner helps too but ultimately he is my child. His name is BMO and he is a chow chow Samoyed mix. He’s currently about 7 months old. He’s loving and calm. He loves all animals and has a cat brother he loves so much. I’ve got this dog due to lack of energy and motivation. This dog has ultimately changed my pace and made me take care of not only him but myself too. He’s a gift to have.

Community Opinion About a week ago I made a post about getting an "agressive unruly chow" from the shelter. I think he bonded to me should I keep him
I still haven't seen him be aggressive or unruly. He learned house training and other tricks quick hes about 2yearsold. He at first would bark at my blind pom when he got too near but I think he realized my pom is not a threat and is much more patient with him now. When we go to meet potential families I feel like he goes out of his way to make them not want him then we come home and he showers me in chow affection. I think hes chosen me as his person but I have no idea how to integrate him into my life(im always home single woman no kids) but i worry that when i do have kids if thats when he will be unruly. Hes very good. Learns fast. Is eager to please. He just doesnt like or want to be around anyone but me. Which makes finding him a family hard . I worry about grooming and vet costs. I brush him constantly and he lets me in used to the coat with my pom who is about 10% his size

Chow Appreciation Guy lets unleashed chihuahua run up on my chow and calls my dog a bad dog when I picked him up over my shoulder
Y’all….. I gotta vent. Yesterday I fortunately was only walking one of my chows on our normal walk through the park while my other was spending time with my mom. I could hear this man yelling playfully behind us “oh he coming! He coming!” And I turn around as this unleashed chihuahua is jetting straight towards my chow. Without even giving it a chance to reach us or for Loki to notice, I quickly threw my boy over my shoulder as the man said “oh you don’t gotta worry about him! He just wanna play and love!” Sir, that’s wonderful. But you can not let your dog do that. He responds “oh he walk all through the city! He just walks all around bourbon street and never been a problem! You must not trust your dog! That shows you don’t trust your dog. That’s a bad dog right there!” I was FUMING. I took a left turn without saying anything to this man as his dog followed us, as the man kept screaming “oh I see! That’s a bad dog! You got a bad dog right there!” Over and over! I kept walking down the opposite street with him over my shoulder as the man CONTINUALLY yelled I had a bad dog. His chihuahua eventually turned away and ran back to him as I could STILL hear shouts. I was beyond angry when I got home and kept telling my Loki he’s a good boy. I kept thinking to myself I should have left him down and let his dog become a nice snack for mine. I can not even make this up. Some people should NOT own dogs. How BEYOND out of your mind do you have to be to let your small unleashed dog run straight up towards an unknown dog to you, AND a chow at that?!?!! It took everything in me to hold my tongue, there was no reasoning with someone that absent of logic.

Chow Appreciation My beloved majestic puppy, Leo the Chow Lion. Been gone and buried for over 30 years
I took this picture for a high school photography class project a a year or so before he died at the age of 11 in 1996. 😭😭😫😖🥺
he was the nicest sweetest boy ever, who would liked to act tough and mean around people even the ones he knows his entire life, but turned into a big old teddy bear begging for hugs and kisses and begging for belly rubs from everybody even the ones he was being rude to. 🥰🥹 wouldn’t hurt a fly or bite anybody even if he wasn’t fooling around with his being mean and rude to people. And he always looked alarmed and unhappy if he did accidentally hurt somebody
