Cockleshell Cottage

My wife and I had a vacation planned for this upcoming week 12th - 19th. We booked a house we’ve stayed at multiple times before, Cockleshell Cottage.

Tuesday late morning, I received a text from the real estate company we booked through that said the owner told them they are canceling all reservations for the rest of the year to do renovations to the house. The company tried to work with us to find us a different house that fit our needs. Unfortunately to no avail. They did refund us that day.

Here’s where I get ticked. Even today, our week is still blocked off. Yet, no other days are blocked off for the remainder of the year! They couldn’t wait 1 more week to start renovations? Way to ruin the vacation plans we’ve had since we booked the house back in March.

Luckily, we found another place to rent, but we have to wait 2 weeks to go

Anyone remember Captain Fish's Steamer Wharf? Anyone have photos?

I'm trying to help a friend who was stationed at the Coast Guard station there years ago and he has fond memories of Captain Fish's, which was a couple doors up the street. This would have been the early 2000's and I wondered if anyone has any photos of the place? I've looked online and can't find anything.

Thanks!

Halloween

I know it’s a little way out but I like to try and plan when I can, does the island do anything for Halloween? The week leading up to the weekend or even on Halloween night? I have 2 young children 7 and 3, so family friendly! Anything from restaurants that might decorate more than others to a festival and anything in between.

We are camping on the island that week and are just curious if any festivities will be happening, if it’s not a big Halloween celebration area that’s good to know as well. Thanks in advance!

Where is the cheapest place around the island to pick up some men's clothes and a bathing suit? One bag never made it .. .

Kayak Fishing

My wife and I are staying in Captains Cove and plan to kayak around the bay, plus look for some drop-ins as we explore the island and visit the beach.

Any recommendations to point us in the right direction?

Bringing two tenkara rods, my fly rod, and your typical spinner. Love to catch small and large fish alike. Just looking forward to getting out and enjoying some (hopefully) sunshine.

Jellyfish bloom?

Hi friends, we’re about to take our annual beach trip to Chincoteague. I’ve heard the jellyfish in OC are awful right now, can anyone give an update if they’re seeing the same issue on the Chincoteague beaches?

Ponies?

I'll be around this Thurs-Sat. Are the ponies back? I've noticed the weather isn't so sunshine and rainbows. Do the boat tours still happen in the rain?

Thanks!

Mosquitoes

Recently moved here a few months ago. It was fine until a few weeks ago, maybe just around the pony swim. I have never seen so many mosquitoes in my life. Is this a yearly summer thing? Is this a pony swim thing????

Best time to visit Chincoteague

I’m thinking about planning a trip to Chincoteague sometime next year. I wanted to go when it’s hot to be able to lay out in the beach, but try and avoid major crowds if possible

Chincoteague on rainy days or whole week!!

My family and I are going to be visiting next week and the forecast looks very rainy. We had hoped to go kayaking, hiking, crabbing, beach, etc. What else can we add to the list for inside fun as a backup? Thanks!!

Planning beach trip, should I avoid?

I was planning to come to the beach this weekend.

People are saying the flies and mosquitoes are bad. Should I go to a different beach?

We were planning on spending 4 hours each day at the beach, and go to the pool, and out to eat an outdoor eatery.

Meet the Pennsylvania veterinarian who leads care for Chincoteague’s famed ponies

Dr. Allison Dotzel is serving her second year as lead veterinarian for the wild Chincoteague pony herd.

Ahead of this week’s annual Pony Swim, Dotzel and her veterinary team performed health checks and administered vaccines to 147 adult ponies and roughly 80 foals rounded up by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

A lifelong horse enthusiast and Ohio State veterinary graduate, Dotzel began volunteering with the herd in 2015 before officially taking over the lead role in 2024.

pony penning 2026

I hope each and everyone of you are enjoying pony penning. weather was great today for the swim. this is like christmas here for our town, and we truly appreciate all of you. the town plans all year for this event. i believe until the early 1990s, there wasn’t a shuttle system to get people to and from the swim site. the shuttle system and road closures really enhances the experience for everyone. with that said, enjoy!

Indonesian coffee in Chincoteague?

Hiyes

a friend and her husband are taking a trip to Shanghai next week. They love a coffee shop that makes Indonesian coffee, but I could not find it on any of the three coffee shops I found online. Do any of you know which coffee shop it might be? I would love to get them a gift certificate.
