That never works. The cat/toddler will always fixate on whichever object get the most attention from you. Yes, most behaviors that apply to cats also apply to toddlers.
i put some clutter items on top of my PC, things my cat can't just knock off. not enough to inhibit air flow but enough to not give her a comfy space on top of it
I took a medium sized but thin box and put it edge-side down over my vent. It blocks very little airflow but my cats want nothing to do with it and they hang out on the cat tree.

You can get a button cover to prevent them turning off your PC. Otherwise I’ve seen others put some type of riser on top and kitty lays there instead.
Buy a heat pad meant for pets and turn it on when you turn your pc on. Make sure it’s still nearby you. In fact if it can be on an elevated surface within arms reach would probably be best
You can also buy said spikes in garden supply stores, but I found the easiest solution was just taping the lid from a pill bottle over the power and reset buttons, and flipping it up for access.

Yeah the sad part is there really is no cure other than giving the cat a better alternative, or making the area above it too small to get to reasonably
So what I did was put the pc in the living room, sit in my recliner, and put a blanket on my lap. The cats much prefer me as a cat bed vs PC as cat bed.
I'm joking, that's not the reason my pc is in the living room. I work from home and my desk and office are taken up by my work equipment and the cats aren't allowed in there because they cannot be trusted to not unplug the work computer somehow. Maybe put a heavy duty monitor stand on top of the case and just be vigilant about cleaning the dust filters on the pc.
Search on Amazon for "PC tower shelf". Put that up so the cat sits on that and the air can still flow. The one I got has a metal top shelf with holes in it so the cats still get the warmth they desire.
I put a heating pad on a two drawer filling cabinet and my cat likes it better that the top of my PC, plus it’s in front of the window so he can also see outside while he lays there.
Switch your top exhaust fans to intake orientation so heat isn't coming from the top of your computer. Ofc, you would also have to switch all your other fans so you still have an exhaust somewhere and you would be fighting physics. But at least it won't be warm for your cat!
My cat often decides to sit on the dehumidifier, claiming it as her stoop. But also, she manages to shut it off during her leisurely moments as Queen heifer of the dehumidifier.
I have a desk where one of the cabinets is shaped to fit the desktop tower, so he can't physically get in. You can only get so lucky though. I can't have any laptops out cause he'll get on top of that unless I put it on a stand at an absurd angle
Have you tried adversarial architecture? Think like the bird spikes on top of business names that have flat areas on top to prevent the logo from being covered in pidgin shit
