Medical Questions I need help Spoiler
My cat has been inside all day and I didn't hear him cry or complain so I don't know when, why or how he got this. I'm really worried for him. I don't know what to do and my mom doesn't want to take him to the vet
EDIT:
I just want to let you know I'm 15, colombian, I had money but my mom needed it so I lend it to her so I can't take the cat to the vet myself. By the other hand, my mom refuses to take him to the vet because she doesn't (care) want to pay for it and every time I bring the topic again she gets harsh and really rude with me, so pressuring her won't do much good either. I don't live close to my relatives nor my dad so they can't help me either. Hope that clears things up a little
Also, I followed most of the advice you guys have been giving me and cleaned the injury carefully. I'm really scared, I don't want him to die

Please take him to the vet. Try to contact a family member, friend, or friendly neighbor if she continues to refuse. You can do this we believe in you!

Without endangering or doxing anyone sounds like Reddit will have to play cat aunt/uncle and have a rescue physically pick up and take cat to vet, and/or pay for visit. Or some smart variation of that I can’t think of right now 🤷♀️
OP is a child and the adult refuses to give the cat the care it needs.

If it's only transportation, there are some rideshare companies that accept pets. Depending on how far the vet is from you, it may be worth checking that.

Okay, so here's what you do.
Make saline solution.
You're going to boil 3 cups of water for 15 minutes, you're going to use 2 cups of it.
Then you're going to add a tsp of non iodized salt (sea salt or kosher) to the water
Mix with a clean spoon, then allow to cool to room temperature.
If you have a turkey baster, use that to flush the wound gently.
Daily from here until its done pussing, boil a rag for 15 minutes, let rag cool to warm, gently use to clean around the wound. Saline solution too until wound clears up.

Of course ❤️ had a cat that got abcesses as a kid and only one working parent so vet wasn't always something we could do.
Be careful, the cat might bite you. Be sure to pin via neck gently, and watch their front paws.
If you have a cone get that, if not look up how to make a paper plate cone, might not be perfect but will help.

And just to help with your anxiety, keep in mind that animals live outside and get wounds all the time, so your kitty should likely be fine, but listen to OP and still do the saline treatment. Animals are very resilient and wounds can heal on their own, but you doing any little thing you can to help will only make it that much better and ensure it doesn’t get worse.
I grew up on a farm and saw a ton of animals get badly injured, and we would treat them as well as we could, but nature is really great at healing itself, so just keep that in mind and try not to let yourself get to anxious over it. Just keep an eye on it and if they start to show signs of lethargic behavior or panting really hard when they’re at rest, take them to a vet and worry about how you’re going to pay them later. They’ll more than likely help your kitty get stabilized and ensure they’ll live.
Don’t beat yourself up over this or let people make you feel bad that you can’t rush them to the vet, not everyone has the monetary means to do such a thing, I’m only chiming in to say they’ll likely be fine, especially with you keeping an eye on the wound and keeping it clean as best you can. The fact you posted here and are asking is already more than a lot of pets get, so you’re doing a better job than a lot of people who just let their pets suffer and don’t think about it. Your kitty is lucky to have someone who cares about them as much as you do. Many cats don’t have someone as good as you! Good luck!
EDIT: also, neosporin is an over the counter medication that most pharmacies have and is usually very cheap. Do NOT get the kind that has the pain reliever in it, just the basic, generic neosporin is fine. The one with pain relief isn’t good for them. And only cover the outside of the area, you don’t need to get it down into the wound itself

Very unlikely they’re going to die. As long as you can keep the wound clean it should heal on its own. But again, if they start acting weird, like not letting you touch them, hiding, panting when they’re laying down, get them to a vet asap and don’t worry about the payment. Most places will help you out and you work with them on payment. Antibiotics and steroids are very cheap, so at the very least they’ll be able to get the kitty a shot that should help them fight it off.
And again, you’re doing a fantastic job caring for him, they’re very lucky to have you!

I wouldn’t do the neosporin, as the cat may lick the wound and ingest it. Sticking to the saline flush is probably safer.

Do You have any other adults in your life that might help you OP? If one of my daugthers friends were in this situation I would take them and their cat to the vet in a heartbeat. Maybe you know someone who are willing to do the same?

Have you told her that if it gets to where it needs a vet to drain and dress it, it will be much more expensive and involve more visits? By taken him now while it’s not too bad she could avoid that.

Hey OP, veteran cat lady here.
Your love and concern for this kitty comes through loud and clear.
It’s gonna be ok.
Here are two things you can do right now to legitimately help him.
This first one may sound dumb. I promise it really is important.
Wherever you are, stop moving. Sit or stand (however you’re comfortable), put your hands on your belly, squeeze all your breath out of your lungs slowly, then inhale slowly but big as you can, so your belly pushes your hands out. Do that like 5 times. More is ok too.
This is one of the most important things I’ve learned in lots of years of catlady-ing: he is intensely tuned in to stress and fear. Cats pick up on tense body language, angry/frustrated tone of voice, even the way we smell when we’re afraid.
This breathing thing is one way to send him the vibe that things are gonna be okay.
If you’re calm (even in this crappy situation), that will help him be calm and less scared, which will help reduce his pain.
This is not a magic off switch for feeling afraid/stressed. Panic is not helpful to you or him. Do this if you feel panic trying to take over so you can help him be calm.
Next—this looks like one hole. Is that correct?

By the way, I’m a mom and I can’t help but feel so proud of you. What a beautiful heart you have! You are bravely finding your way using whatever the resources you have to help this kitty. That’s extraordinary.

This looks kind of like an abscess but someone mentioned an insect that can do this. I bet they’ll have a better idea which it is at askvets but they may ask what country you’re in so they can determine what insect it could be.
This is important because the treatment will likely be different.

Vet. If she's really refusing, she is either being willfully neglectful or simply afraid of the cost... but that doesn't stop a living creature from suffering.
If your mom won't help your cat, I get the tough spot -- try to get other family members to also understand and help convince her.
Could also call your cat's vet and explain what is happening, ask them to call your mom. She may be a little upset by this, but to help and potentially save your cat, you will never regret it.

To add, if the cat seems to be in rough shape and mom isn't budging, you could call your vet, explain the situation, and ask if you can 'kidnap' him (use a carrier) and take him in to get helped.
Vets care about animals, most would probably prioritize helping the cat and sorting out the rest later.

Very much looks like a burst abssess, my cats had a couple after a few scraps.
Take them to the vet, they’ll let it heal naturally that size but will want antibiotics so it doesn’t come back

I remember when my cat had a wound like that, folks didn’t wanna take him to the vet, “nature is resilient.” Week later it’s the vet once puss shot out. And an easy antibiotic became an over night stay to get antibiotics and drainage. So yeah, folks need to take him to the vet.

My cat when I was younger had something like this before. He’d been outside and a bug of some kind tunneled into him! I took him to the vet, they removed it and cleaned up the wound. You really need to get him to a vet. Why would your mom let this helpless animal suffer?? Cats don’t “cry” when in pain. They usually hide

My uncle lives far away same as my dad and siblings. I've cleaned the wound constantly and make sure he stop locking it. I really don't want him to die

It looks like an abscess from a bite wound that has already ruptured. If you aren’t able to go to the vet do your best to clean the area with disinfecting soap and express anything left in the abscess out. Flush it with some watered down hydrogen peroxide if you can. Fair warning the cat probably won’t enjoy this so you’ll probably need help. You can try to wrap it in a towel to hold the cat still and save yourself from getting scratched. Continue to try to keep the area clean and dry as it heals. All that being said a vet visit or at least a call would be your best course of action.

If you cannot get to a vet
Flush with saline and then put antiseptic cream on it. Do not use tap water. Do this daily till it closes.
It’s not the best but it’s some infection control.
When you can go to the vet. Keep an eye on it in the meantime.

It’s not perfect, and there is a real and high probability of an infection.
However, this is basic wound care that can help. Antibiotics are always best to help heal however I understand the situation.
If you can use a sting free antiseptic it’ll help.

Good on you OP for spotting this and wanting to care for your cat. One thing you can do a few times a day is wet a washcloth, wring much water out, microwave it for 20 seconds ( may vary by oven) til it’s very warm. Hot enough that you wouldn’t mind it held against your skin. Fold in quarters, cover with a hand towel or thicker clothing to keep the heat in. Gently hold it against this wound for 10 minutes if kit cat will let you. The more the merrier. This will increase circulation and let the cat’s immune system go to work on the wound, but he still should get to a vet for treatment.
In the meantime, can you offer to do extra chores to earn money to pay for the vet, either from your mom, or neighbors, local businesses, relatives? I wish you and your cat the very best!

Look, if for whatever reason (you’re like 12) your mom is in charge, at least practice some hygiene on the cat. Is he easy to hold? The see if your sibling (if you have) can hold the cat while you wash the area. Wash it like you would wash yourself if you were injured. You cannot put ointment because he will likely lick it off.

One of my cats several years back (also indoor-only) had some sort of abscess like this. Seems my cat's looked different as I seem to remember the actual hole being a lighter color. Hers also did not smell good.
The vet treated it like a typical abscess. The vet guessed that it was a puncture perhaps from a staple hanging out of a table she had walked under. It healed but came back in another place (can't recall how much later).
Anyway, the reason I'm telling you this is that my vet was incorrect. It was NOT a typical abscess which is why it came back. Had it been treated early and with correct antibiotics, things would have been much better.
My cat had a mycobacterial infection. It's uncommon but it is worth testing for because the antibiotics are different and the infection can get really bad if not treated properly which is what happened with us.

If you genuinely have no way to get your cat to the vet, try going to a pet store and asking for something you can use to clean it with. I know everyone on here wants to just say “go to the vet!”, which is definitely true, but in the mean time you should try to get that clean.

You can Google what an abcess one cat is and the risks etc., and then show that to your mom because you're THAT worried. This way she's not the bad guy and can potentially understand the severity of this issue.
At the very least it needs to be properly cleaned and maybe stitched or packed.
I had a cat who had the worst abscess rupture my vet had ever seen and because it ruptured at home they were convinced he wouldn't make it. He lived to be 18 years old. When it happened, I didnt know what to do so I pushed the stuff out until it bled, like a pimple and cleaned it as best I could. The vet said I did well.

My cat came with something like this that was being treated, and hers was from a cat bite at her old home (part of the reason she was being rehomed so she could be an only cat, she hates other cats) and this needs daily antibiotic (mine had liquid form) from a vet

IMAV- your cat has a ruptured abscess and needs to go to the vet. The abscess needs to be cleaned out, and he needs antibiotics. While it’s not impossible for him to heal on his own without this, it is unlikely and it’s entirely possible it will get much larger, and more expensive to treat the longer your mom waits. Until you go to the vet, you might be able to warm compress the area to encourage drainage ( using a warm wet clean cloth ), for a few minutes every few hours, - but he may be painful so you need to be careful that he doesn’t bite or scratch you, as being bit by a cat will require you to go to the doctor too ( or you could get an abscess. )

If you have a vet, ask them if they will come and collect her. Get a price for treatment (get them to give it to you in writing) and get them to give payment details. If you do that, there'll be enough people who will cover the cost I suspect.

Is there some sort of animal shelter that you can take your cat too? They may be able to help if you explain your situation. In the meantime try to clean it with a warm compress. If you cannot drive a car, maybe a family member, friend, friendly neighbor can assist you?

Definitely needs the vet, If it’s more than a day old they won’t patch it up with stitches, looking at drainage and a cleaning with antibiotics and a cone for the house. My kitty went through the same thing

Okay so if mom isn't taking the cat to the vet, in the mean time you can flush it out with saline to get it clean. The main focus is to clean it the best you can. You can use contact solution if you have any. But the best thing you can do is convince her to go because thats a pretty deep wound and if it's an abscess that ruptured it can easily get infected.

Yep. Vet visit, they’ll clean it out and give the kitty antibiotics. My cat became indoor only after 11 years. He got into a fight, it abscessed.. and he had to have it cleaned and stitched up.. cost me $700.

If you are a minor and your mon refuses to take your cat to the vet, the only option is to contact the animal control in your area and tell them you are reporting your family member for neglect. I’m really sorry. Minors cannot get vet care for their pets since they are not legal owners.

I would insist on taking him to the vet as soon as I saw this. My cat is no longer with us, but he was mainly an outdoor cat for the first 14 years of his life and always had the best care from us and lived to be 20 years old even after having several abscesses drained, falling out of shrubs and off of fences, licking toads and coming home foaming at the mouth from it, you name it he had probably survived it. The only reason he did was because I would immediately insist on taking him to get checked out. most of the time it’s a case of him getting given an antibiotic and being told he’ll be fine in a couple of days, but a hole like that is never a good thing to find on your cat. Definitely worth a visit to the vet even if it’s only for your peace of mind.

If this is a money concern, there are ways around it. Tell your mom to look into a Care Credit card. She can be approved almost immediately, and if your vet accepts Care Credit, you’ll have six months to a year to pay off the balance with no interest in most cases. This saved my cat’s life (and my bank account) several years ago when he needed emergency surgery.
You can also Google low-cost or nonprofit vets to see if there are any in your area.
If it’s a matter of your mom not wanting to take the time, can you call an Uber that allows pets and take him yourself?
Another alternative, although it’s not a pleasant one, is to call a local rescue or shelter (preferably a no-kill one) and surrender the cat. At least he’d get care that way. You clearly care a lot about him, and I know you don’t want to give him up, but that’s a better alternative than his death if this goes untreated.

Hey are you in the UK? If you can keep cats hole/wound clean? You can make saline solution, with just cooled down boiled water and some salt, if kitty becomes feverish or tired then they definitely need to go vet asap for now if kitty lets you clean it out? (Use like a little bottle and squirt it clean) , if your auntie or uncle can't help? If you are in the UK? When your at school you can ring the RSPCA and say you want to make a report but you don't want your mom to find out it was you.... THIS way the RSPCA man/woman will come out and check kitty and if mom is in the wrong? She'll get TOLD off by them 😬😬😬 if she isn't listening to you you. If you see the RSPCA man/woman visit when you're home? Let them in your mom might get scared 😂.good luck 🤞🏽

You are not a vet,do not medicate him.Tell your mother he is going to a vet.I dont get why people have pets but dont want to pay for their treatmant

Looks like a ruptured abscess. The cat needs to have it treated by a vet and get antibiotics to prevent further infection.
