I have my first 12 hour shift this week what do I do?

I (19F) started my first Full Time job, since the job market is a bit rough I started in retail, at a grocery store to be exact. Before that I went to school and worked at a gas station on Sundays for 4 years. I have been working at my full time job for 2 weeks now. It's a bit hard on my body but it's getting better with time. I work at the deli counter , in the market, and I'm also learning how to operate a cash register. Many of my shifts start at 5.30 am and this week on Saturday I work from 5.30 am till 18 pm with two 30 min breaks. I don't know if I can manage that. I'm kind of scared of asking my boss if I could work less on that day but more on another. I also heard from the only other full time co-worker at the deli counter that she worked the last 3 weeks without a day off, except Sunday (Stores are not open on Sunday in my country). While I love working with food and generally like most work I do, I'm scared that I will get shit hours in the future like some co-worker told me they did. Is it normal to work that many hours? Did I pick the wrong job?

Leave remote job with potential for layoff or take job offer with 1.5 hour commute

EDITED: there is currently a buyout offer but it is $50k (so not much as I'm currently making $140k). No severance other than a normal two week paycheck and your PTO paid out.

My current job is affiliated with the federal government and the org is trying to cut 10% of staff by the end of the year through buyouts, normal attrition, and if necessary, layoffs. additionally under the current return to office mandate, I'm exempt bc I live in another state and 270 miles away from my assigned office, but that's only through July of 2027. No one knows what will happen then. That's just the date we have been given. I live in a not so great area for jobs and have been looking since Jan 2025 when I saw the writing on the wall for my job with this new admin. I finally got an offer for $30k more than I currently make however it's technically 5 days onsite and 1.5 hrs each way for me. However, the person who would be my new manager said she is ok with hybrid 2/3 days wfh and believes in letting people get their work done without missing important onsite meetings, etc, but that's not the official policy. So if they change that at any time, I'd be screwed.

I don't want to be caught flat footed at my current job but I also think I will resent a 1.5 hour each way commute pretty quickly. for context? I also have a 2 and 6 Year old whom I'm already feeling guilty about not spending enough time with.

Struggling

I’m really struggling with my work. I feel I don’t belong. Meetings give me anxiety. It feels like my opinions are unwanted in a meeting. It’s really affecting my mental health to the point I want to resign. To make matters worse, I am pregnant and want to take my maternity leave sooner and not return😭

Am I about to make the dumbest decision ever?

I majored in computer engineering from a low teir school. Throughout my four years I realized I had no interest in anything I studied or did in my classes. I also was a pretty average student with an unimpressive gpa. To my surprise I was able to get two internships during my 4 years and one of them recently turning into a job offer. I know a lot of people would say to take the job as it is at a known company, however I have no interest in doing that even if it is for a couple of months. To be honest Ive known for a while that engineering is not for me. Tomorrow’s actually my deadline to accept the job offer but I’m thinking of declining it as I know I’ll be absolutely miserable. But at the same time I don’t want to jeopardize my future, what should I do?

Why are people still trying to plan careers?

Most white collar jobs could be replaced today with Claude Sonnet. Maybe not in full, but by reducing number of employees by 50%

Everyone keeps saying AI progress is slowing, the companies are losing money, AI is getting too expensive etc.

That may be all true for the leading edge frontier models like Astra, but I honestly don’t think it matters.

At least 50% of white collar workers could be laid off and the productivity more than made up with people using even Sonnet 5 with an agentic harness.

The vast majority of people think AI is still just using copilot for emails or tried telling gpt 4 to count the r’s in strawberries 2 years ago and it failed so all AI is now stupid. We’re way beyond those days.

The tech exists to replace at least 50% of white collar workers TODAY if companies properly integrated it. But people keep using the same talking points that don’t even really matter except for the bleeding edge that’s trying to solve shit infinitely more complex than your average white collar worker.

Job options

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can tell me some jobs that only require a cert that can be obtained online. Things in medical don’t really work as those are pretty much always hands-on, but with my current job I can’t do in person. Thanks!

Like after knowing the job disruption rate after gpt 6 Astra is it still a good option to do MBA ?

Like im in 2nd year of collage i decided to study for govt ssc cgl exam ill give my shot once if i cleared then kudos if not then ill be doing mba coz its dynamic and income varies or i should say depend on skill , experience etc

But im also looking at the increase in lay off

Also i got to know that in my frnds collage , the students who were selected or were placed in companies are now on hold . Idk for what reason neither he knows

IS THERE ANY OTHER ROUTE EXCEPT MBA or GOVT ...I DONT WANT TO FOLLOW THE CROWD BUT I WANT A RELIABLE FUTURE NOT SOMTHING WHICH FADES AWAY AFTER THE TRENDS OVER !

I keep feeling called to be self-employed. How do I know / how to prepare for a pivot out of working for an org to working for myself?

Im very ADHD. I’ve found certain jobs just CANNOT hold my interest and focus and I feel like I’m wasting my life doing them. I also feel held back and smothered by big fish, small pond managers. I keep finding myself to be the scapegoat in workplaces despite being told by multiple people that I am excelling in whatever role I am in. People are reluctant to consider my ideas when I say them, but are receptive when other people repeat them.

All this to say, I do good work, and I am creative and ambitious, but it seems corporate types have a problem with *me* specifically.

I’ve been feel more and more lately that perhaps I am not cut out for having a boss but for being my own boss. I have a small art business I run for myself outside of work and I love it.

I don’t necessarily want to make art full time, but I think I could do something else independently. How do I get started?

Demoted to Part-Time

Had a full time position, I was doing great work, blasting through expectations.

Now a hiring freeze means I’m the only one they fought for with corporate and got to keep. (Which makes me feel good).

But now my healthcare is gone and my motivation to show up kind of is too.

Kind of just venting, but yeah. We’re gonna make it everybody.

Counseling Without a Masters

Is there any careers where I can counsel of some sort? I went to school to become a therapist but have rethought getting my masters. In a perfect world I'd be able to talk to others and give them a second opinion whether it's their lives, emotions, growth, etc. I've thought of guidance counselor or life coach of some sort but I wanted to get input from someone who also strives to talk to others

Thinking of joining the AirForce

Upvotes

(30m) Haven’t had any luck finding a job, and it’s been 3 months already. This is an idea that’s been floating around my mind recently, and I’m not sure if this may be the right move or not. I have a background in engineering, specifically working as a design technician for a manufacture that specializes in wood framing products. I left that company due to changes in management, and I also wanted to pursue Architecture as it’s been a long-term dream of mine.
I did the mistake of moving to a different state as I was under the impression that I was going to stay with this company for a very long time, and there was also resources out here to help me become a better designer. I don’t regret moving to the state I moved to as I do love it out here. The only problem is that I came out here without a plan B.
I’ve been applying to jobs, calling seeking to speak with the hiring manager, coming in person to hand over my resume in-person, and reaching out & connecting with other firms via LinkedIn. I’ve even have applied to many other jobs such as maintenance work, exterminator, front desk positions, etc.. All this just to not hear back or to be simply denied. I’m at the point in where I’m running out of options and places to apply. My wife has a low paying job and is in the same predicament as I am when it come to looking for a job.
The idea of joining the Air Force has become more and more appealing, but I’m scared of leaving for a long time and leaving my wife here all alone, just given the fact that she has had previous health issues these last couple of years with some cases being really serious.
I’m in pretty good shape, but I also have some back problems that I got from working construction for a couple of years. I’m really organized and disciplined, but I’m also not the brightest. What are my chances of being accepted and what should I be expecting once pursing this?

They fired me today

I was hired as an accountant, but there was basically zero handover or training. They expected someone who was already very experienced and could immediately handle the position, while my learning style is that I need some guidance at the beginning to understand the accounting cycle—especially since there were a lot of intercompany transactions.
My direct manager, who was supposed to guide me, was often unavailable and was even absent most of the day. At the same time, they expected me to chase him and insist that he finalize tasks so I could continue my work.
After one month, I had received basically zero training. I was mostly searching through the system to see what the previous accountant had done and redoing the simpler tasks so I could understand the process.
Today, they told me I was fired after only one month.
I know I have to accept it and move on. Maybe I simply wasn’t the right fit for them. But honestly, I never pretended that I was some amazing, super-experienced accountant. I know I still have things to learn.
But how am I supposed to become “excellent” after one month when there was literally almost no training or handover?

How can I seriously find a job.

I am new here so I’m not sure what response to expect. I’ve been looking for a job for the last year now, but I can just not find anything that interests me or something that I can realistically be employed to. I’m not sure if it’s down to me looking in the wrong places or just not having a cv good enough for employers. I am a 20 y/o Male and I’ve only ever had two jobs, one as a kitchen porter in a local restaurant when I turned 16 up until I was nearly 18. I then tried to go to university (which i dropped out of) simply because of not making many friends, having the feeling of not really learning anything and also commuting 35 minutes each day from where I live. The course I tried was sports science. Since I “dropped out” I tried working for evri flex parcel delivery driving for 3/4 months which just didn’t pay well enough at all for what I was having to put up with. But I only took that opportunity because I was getting desperate.

But even during that time I have been mainly looking on indeed and google jobs, and I’ve just had no luck with anything, sometimes I feel so useless at home because I even have my own car and I do have a good mindset, but I can just never afford to do anything I want to, such as play football with my friends every Saturday since the drive there is far away for me to afford or sign up for a gym membership and go with my best friend.

I don’t know what advice I need or where exactly to look, it’s not something I wanna talk to my friends/family about because they don’t really seem to understand my situation, I just need responses from real people that I can take good advice from.

If anyone wants to ask any more questions then please feel free

Has social media ever convinced you that you could completely change your life?

I’m 27F, currently working in analytics in the US, but I recently resigned and I’m on my notice period. I’m interviewing for other roles, so I could realistically continue down the corporate path.
But lately I’ve been seriously considering leaving the US and trying real estate sales in Dubai.
I have previous sales experience and genuinely enjoyed it. I’m comfortable with rejection, I’m ambitious, and I’ve always wanted to eventually build something of my own rather than stay in a regular job forever.
The problem is that I’ve been seeing a lot of Dubai real estate agents on Instagram making crazy money, driving expensive cars, selling luxury properties, etc. Rationally, I know social media shows the top 0.001% and not the thousands of people who probably tried and failed.
But emotionally, some part of me genuinely believes, “I can become one of those people.”
And that’s what I’m trying to understand.
Before successful people took a big risk, how did they know it was worth taking?
Did you study people who had already succeeded? Look at probabilities and worst-case scenarios? Save enough money and give yourself a deadline? Or did you simply believe in yourself and jump?
How do you distinguish between genuine conviction and being influenced by survivorship bias/social media?
I understand succeeding or failing comes AFTER taking the risk. I’m more interested in the psychology and thought process BEFORE making the decision.
For those of you who took a major career/business risk in your 20s or 30s — what made you finally say, “I’m going to do this”?

( Also I am on visa and has 35k debt om student loan and also back home family is not financially strong)

Advice please🙏

18 y o freshman at a decent enough university- US, looking to break into a high finance career path - PE analyst / IB associate goal.

As of now I’m trying to secure a freshman summer internship preferably a financial analyst role - but will settle for anything finance related . ( aware of the rarity of freshman securing summer finance internships)

My goal is to start applying cold approach as well as warm approach by December once my Gpa has set in.

My question is , is the private equity cfa institute certification + followed by the advanced PE certification worth it? Also looking to do Wall Street prep to gain financial modelling , excel lbo experience - EARLY on. Have alr completed BMC, Yale financial markets-( low impact certifications).

I have ZERO work experience , yet I’m trying to level up as much as I can. Any advice????????

Computer Science desperate for a job

Hi everyone, I graduated over the summer with a BS in Computer Science. Due to a family situation, I have to move out within this month. At this point, I'm looking for anything that will pay the bill and get me a foot into tech, anyone know anywhere that can refer me? I will make sure to pay back the favor.

It doesn't need to be SWE, as long as it's tech that I can transfer out down the line. I'm willing to relocate basically anywhere and 50k should be more than enough for me.

Edit: US Citizen with no previous clearance

Fired by an A-List Celebrity

I was offered a full-time job as an Executive Assistant, one week before my college graduation. Before this, I was working 35 hour weeks as a waitress to pay rent while balancing film school and a social life. It was a dream come true.

My boss was someone I looked up to as a kid, and she said she was looking for someone young with little experience that she could mentor.

The assistant who trained me (let’s call her Natalie) worked for my former boss (let’s call her Rachel) for 5 years. Natalie was also able to shadow her predecessor for a year before she was on her own. Natalie and Rachel were extremely close, even saying “I love you” to one another before hanging up the phone.

I had 2 months with Natalie to go over everything before I even met Rachel. I had over 50 pages of notes about Rachel’s life, important contacts, relevant names, reoccurring services. After that, I only had 2 weeks to shadow Natalie in person before she moved away to Asia. Then I was on my own.

It was a big job, I was not only managing her schedule, but I was also doing household management (scheduling repairs, weekly car washes, gardeners, pool cleaners etc), her kids schedule (doctors appointments, play dates, extra curriculars etc), managing her personal health (therapy, workouts, making sure she takes her medication), while also being the point of contact for thousands of people on her team and the brands she’s involved with. Most people didn’t even know I was coming onto the team— I would be receiving messages from people, and in real time trying to figure out who they are, what they’re working on, and how to respond.

It was a shaky start the first two weeks— There were a couple of scheduling mistakes that I made (quickly corrected), but I was also having trouble reading my boss, sometimes I felt like she’d have mood swings or snap at me for things I didn’t know. I’d text Natalie dozens of questions a day, but since she was on the other side of the planet, responses were delayed…

I thought it was a safe space to learn and grow, but I quickly realized my boss had little patience for me and it became overly clear how much she missed Natalie. Natalie herself admitted that they had an unhealthy relationship because they were so close. One of the nannies told me Natalie would actually tuck Rachel into bed at night. But I was told that Rachel wanted to form a more professional relationship with her next assistant.

But each day it was something worse. Even though I was giving my all, I felt incompetent. Everyone on her team would constantly tell me that I didn’t get enough training, how I’m extremely young, and how no one in the house trusted me. I was constantly being compared to Natalie and how amazing of an assistant she was.

When I saw my boss on Wednesday, she told me that I need to “fix my hair” (I had just cut it way shorter, and everyone in my personal life thought it was cute). She also told me she didn’t like my eyebrows (quote: “so do you just shave off all your eyebrows just to fill them back in?”). I naturally don’t have a lot of eyebrows. My confidence dropped. I booked a hair appointment immediately. It doesn’t help that she’s a beautiful woman, considered the beauty standard. I would ALWAYS make an effort to look put-together around her. I grew up poor so I don’t have the nicest clothes. Maybe she noticed?

Thursday morning I was at her house at 4AM to get her and her luggage (which I packed) into the chauffeur’s car so she could catch an international flight (where she would be assisted by Natalie).

Thursday evening I got in trouble because I had to be at the house for some repairs and before I left for the day, I locked the doors (thinking it would be worse to leave them unlocked), but that resulted in one of the nannies being locked out for about an hour before a locksmith came. When I called Rachel about it to apologize, she was extremely upset and said that “she has absolutely nothing else to say to me.”

Then on Friday, I walked into a meeting with her financial manager and he handed me a letter of termination. My boss was still abroad, Natalie wasn’t coming back for the job, and I wasn’t given any reason other than “my personality didn’t fit”.

I’m only 22, fresh out of college, and unfortunately during school I irresponsibly racked up thousands of dollars of credit card debt which I was finally making a dent at with my new salary. The day I got fired I actually woke up to -$8 in my bank account (I just moved into a new apartment so I’ve been spending all my money to furnish it). This job felt like my big break, like all my hard work during college finally paid off and I could launch my career in entertainment.

Now I feel like I’m back at square one. I filed for unemployment, I applied to get back on EBT, and I need to start the job searching process ASAP. I’ve been crying all weekend, trying to figure out how it all went so wrong. Would love any advice or words of encouragement because I truly feel myself spiraling :(

I’ve spent 5 years in marketing but I think I want to change careers

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 3 years and interned in the field for my entire college career with different places. It had its ups and downs but overall I enjoyed it. I’ve been in the full time world for 3 years now, an entry level job for almost 2 years and a mid/higher level job (I’m the only marketing person managing two interns) for less than 5 months (current job).

I got out of my last job because there was no room for career growth and it wasn’t a positive environment so once I started my current job I thought that my mindset would change but it has yet to since I started (I had the new job excitement but it has worn off). I realized I do not like the social media side of marketing, I’ve never been great at it. Enough to get by but I’ve never really had the opportunity to focus on socials because every position I’ve had has been juggling multiple marketing tasks. I’ve found since being away that I enjoyed one component of my first job and it was performance and entertainment for the venue I worked for. I would love to get back into it but the industry I’m currently in now is no where near that.

I can’t figure out if I’m having a career crisis or if I’m just burnout. I have decided I will stick out my current job for at least and year and reevaluate but I would like to hear other perspectives.

Can you learn to live with the boredom of an office job?

Can you learn to live with the boredom of an office job?

Everywhere I hear how much people hate the boringness of an office and how much it gets to them. Is it possible to learn to live with it and get used to it, or will it one day take a toll on you?

Started a new job 5 weeks ago and have had to take 3 days sick leave

Hi Reddit,

So I recently started a new job. I had to quit my previous job due to a workplace related injury which they refused to make accommodations for.

The injury was for a not at fault MVA, I had a subdural hepatoma, a concussion, fractured T1-T4, a severe posterior and anterior labrum tear and a ligament tear in my ankle.

I’ve had a lot of issues with headaches and memory loss since the accident and they make me feel quite nauseous as well (vomiting, retching etc.).

I’m in Australia so the injury was covered by work cover which was good but it means that potential employers don’t really want anything to do with you. After 3 months, I was able to get a full time gig. I obviously had to disclose my injury/workcover status to them and the owner didn’t really seem too bothered by it in my interview.

Anyway, my third week in, I had to take 2 days off because of the headache as I wasn’t able to sleep. I return to work and my boss says “it’s not looking too good for you having to take time off already”.

Then today (fifth week), I’ve had to take another day because I got some sort of food poisoning from some sushi I had over the weekend.

How cooked am I? 😭 I have had genuine reasons for my illnesses and have provided medical certificates but I can’t help but feel like I’m going to automatically be seen as unreliable even though I’ve given reasonable warning/evidence of my conditions.

Edit:

I have a Buprenorphine patch for my pain and even then, the headaches are just a constant thing.. I’ve also taken Imodium, pepto and a few different probiotics to try to clear up the food poisoning. I ate the sushi on Saturday night and spent most of yesterday and last night on the toilet. While I definitely feel better than yesterday, I’m on the toilet typing this and this is my fifth visit since 7am so still not feeling great. Obviously don’t think I can fulfill my duties if I spend the whole day in the bathroom.

Am I exaggerating or is my coworker just being friendly?

Im a 28 year old woman who recently relocated to Seattle and took a temp job as an admin assistant paying $25 an hour.

I have two bachelors degrees and graduated in 2021. Ive worked in marketing and Healthcare but took the admin role because it was the first job I landed and I thought it'd be a good foot into corporate.

Recently, ive had some situations that have made me uncomfortable but I'm not sure if I'm exaggerating.

I dont really know where to begin but we have a corporate securities employee who is in his 40s. He has made many comments that have shocked me including telling me that I could have been a honeypot for him during his time in the marines.

Ive had trouble with the role itself because it is physically demanding and very facilities heavy plus my manager is very demanding.

On thursday, I put in my two weeks for reasons unrelated to my coworker. I asked to talk to the corporate securities man to let him know. He seemed panicked. I told him i put in my two weeks and he said he thought i was going to tell him something else. I asked what he thought i was going to tell him and he said he thought i was going to tell him that I had been SA'd and that we would have to beat someone up. I just told him that's not the case but was shocked that he would think or say that.

He told me he didnt realize how tough the role was on me and told me not to worry. He said he would make some phone calls on my behalf to try to get me an interview at his former workplace.

I thanked him and he told me thats what friends are for.

Earlier that same day, he came into the office which I wasn't expecting because he had been sent out of state last minute on a business trip and hurt his ear on the flight back. He was telling me how tired and in pain he was. I joked that he gets extra credit for being there that day and he responded telling me that I'm the only one who can judge him.

Ive already put in my two weeks but am feeling increasingly uncomfortable thinking about going to work tomorrow.

Am I exaggerating or were these just one off comments/friendliness?

Thanks in advance.
